Original post follows, but I wanted to keep a list of the luck runes for sure on this thread as well.

[li]~~Confirmed Rune Locations:~~

-> Qufim Island, on the way out to behemoth's dominion.

-> Lufaise Meadows, shortly after you zone from the swirling vortex (from valkurm), head towards the safehold, it is in the first "canyon" area you pass through.

-> Xarcabard, Head up to J-7, there is a tunnel heading east at the southern end of the square. Follow it around to the end, you will end up in J-8, there is a rune at the end.

-> Tahrongi Canyon, Around H-10, in the center of the complex region at the bottom of the map.

-> Yuhtunga Jungle, drop down the hole on the way to yhoator from kazham.

-> Pashhow Marshlands, K-7. Head up behind the outpost, it is in the first "large" area back there.

-> Beaucedine Glacier, H-7 on the ledge above the tower that is in I-7.

-> Batallia Downs,The entrance is at the top center of F-7, goes NE into the bunker.

~~~
[li]~~Confirmed Directions With Locations:~~
[li]North: Tahrongi Canyon.
[li]South: Yuhtunga Jungle.
[li]West: Pashhow Marshlands.
[li]Northwest: Batallia Downs.
[li]North/Northwest: Beaucedine Glacier
[li]West/Northwest: Lufaise meadows.
[li]Far Northwest: Qufim Island.
[li]A great distance Northwest: Xarcabard
In addition, drifftx has added a supplement for information regarding fortunes: Fortunes Read: A Supplement to The Fortunate Mystery
___________________________________________________________
TwilightVigil has supplied the title changing NPC reference:
Title Changing NPCs
Bastok Port - Tuh Almobankha (I-7)
Lower Jeuno - Tuh Almobankha (I-8)
Kazham - Eron-Tomaron (G-7)
Norg - Quntsu-Nointsu G-7
Mhaura - Willah Maratahya (I-8)
Rabao - Shupah Mujuuk (G-8)
San d'Oria South - Moozo-Koozo (K-6)
Selbina - Yulon-Polon (I-9)
Windurst Walls - Burute-Sorute (H-10)
Each NPC generally has the titles for quests related to the city they're in. The Amount of Gil you Pay reflects the Fame level requirement of the Quest. For example, with Burute-Sorute, 100 Gil I could get Crawler Culler. 500 I can get Heir of the New Moon.
_____________________________________________________________
Thank you ALL for your contributions, keep up the great work! :) When we are finished, I will compile all of the information into a comprehensive guide.
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
Like my pun? I know you don't. :D
So anyway... that new fortune teller NPC that SE decided to add in mhaura. I went to check it out.
Here is what she said to me:
"Your lucky color is purple, an electric, dazzling shade.
Your fortune lies to the West.
As for your perfect partner... you should seek one who's title is 'Daybreak Gambler'."
So... cryptic as it is, it got worse when I clicked her again.
"Forgotten your fortune already?
Your color is purple, your fortune lies to the west. Seek a partner with the title 'Daybreak Gambler'.
Here is one more piece of wisdom to aid you in your search.
The balance distinguishes not between lead and gold."
That may not be verbatim, but it is almost exact.
So that was nice and confusing, but I drew up an idea to what it might be referring, and set my plan in motion.
I looked directly west and saw the outer horototo ruins as one of the locations in that direction. I happened to know that inside was a strange apparatus, and that particular machine ran on the purple chip, lightning. Purple.... west... seemed to fight. Lead and gold... sounded like chance to me. Good and bad, you know... lightning cluster or rune weapon. So I gathered up a friend to change her title and come with me, so she did.
Before we left, she checked her fortune.
Blue.
Northwest.
Steaming Sheep Regular.
The hippogryph has fair feathers but foul feet.
Those were her variables.
I thought that perhaps I had been right afterall, because crawler's nest was almost exactly northwest of there, and it housed the water machine, which needed a blue chip. It seemed right.
So... yea...
We set out.
I decided to get a gold ingot and a gold ore to try different trading combinations, incase it was more literal than I thought.
I tried everything. Nothing changed, nothing new, nothing at all.
So I got another friend to get his fortune.
Blue.
North-Northwest.
Vampire hunter D-minus.
The hippogryph has fair feathers and foul feet.
Those were his variables.
Now I have to admit, I was very stumped at this point.
I spent the better part of the day attempting to figure this out, but came to no solid conclusion.
The fact that SE deliberately put this in the game means something. The fact that they give you a specific title for another person means something. The fact that not every variable changes at once means something.... I just don't know what.
I was desperatly trying to figure it out... but now I come to the forum for help. Anyone have any clue, anything? Can any of you post your fortunes exactly, to help distinguish a pattern? I would really like to figure out what in the world this means.
By the way, I tried changing my title, waiting for the day change, a lot of things... nothing altered my fortune once it was given to me.
Any info would be appreciated. Thank you~
Each of the titles it gives you is the one given from a particular quest. In your case, it's one given in San D'oria for the map of King Ranperre's Tomb from Aurege at F-3 in North San D'Oria. Have you tried talking to him?
Rate up for your detective work. I'll be watching this thread for your progress. Good luck!
When I read your clue about the lead and gold the 1st thing that came to mind for me was Alchemy, since historically the purpose of it was to find a way to turn lead into gold. Maybe your partner is also an Alchemist?
No clue about the Hyppogryph clue. I'll think about that.
That's interesting. Your theory makes perfect sense.
Maybe this is what the password function on those strange apparatus things is for. Hope somebody figures the rest of this little puzzle out soon.
Did you try trading the corresponding chip to the apparatus?
Also theres two Hippogryph items that may tie into this somehow, feather and tailfeather.
I can't get on right now, but I'll be sure to try it for myself when I can.
This sounds like crafting advice to me.
Fortune to the west = face west
Your color = your crystal
Not sure about the specific title requested...perhaps something to do with the place or npc which gave that title?
The last parts suggest a specific craft - "distinguishes not between lead and gold" = Smithing?
"The Hyppogryph has fair feathers but foul feet" - ...well, I guess clothcrafting maybe.
Other possiblities - the lead and gold thing might be a reference to Bastok, which is the only city with both smithing guilds. But what "the balance" means...hmm. All I can think of is that elevator in Metalworks :P
Fair feathers but foul feet suggests a muddy or watery place. Windurst is very watery. Actually, sounds more like Giddeus - feathers = yagudo.
Yea, I thought of the quests too.
'Daybreak gambler' Came from 'exit the gambler' in sandy. I have not tried talking to any of those NPCs, as I didn't think they would reference the title if they were talking about the quest npcs. I just had her change title in sandy.
'Steaming sheep regular' comes from a pair of quest (pre req then quest) in bastok. I had not done these quests yet, so the title wasn't available to me. We were going to try having me as her partner and her as mine, with titles changed accordingly.
'Vampire hunter D-minus' was the same deal, Came from the warding vampires quest in sandy that I actually had not ever bothered to do.
I hadn't put much more thought into that.
It really is driving me nuts though. They deliberately added this, which means there is something there. My friends and I thought of a great many things... questing... constellations... directional facing with personalized results... we just don't know. The fact that some is figurative, and some is literal is making me really think. When they said hippogryph, I thought of, obviously, riverne... then the feather... then the (what I assume to be) griffons on the sandy flag... then CoP... then lufaise, and tavnazia... then I thought northwest...
Gah, it's so confusing.
The fact, also, that one friend got "Northwest" while another got "North-northwest" (and the fact that nothing about this changes) yet they BOTH got "blue" and the hippogryph clue makes me think it's not referring to one certain thing.
The most interesting thing to me is that if it IS referencing crafting, and each person has a different ideal way to go about it... then it could revolutionize the crafting world, and would really explain why it's been so hard to pin down a standard for best chance at HQs.
In addition to all this... what would your "ideal partner" be ideal for? NM drop luck? Crafting if you are paired? Getting a quest to initiate somewhere? I just don't understand. It will take some time to decode.
I want to get some more people's fortunes to see if I can get a pattern out of it. Any would help.
If you know someone who plays on the JP version and is fluent in English and Japanese you could ask you to translate their fortune and post it here. If the quest was written in Japanese and then translated into English slight variations in wording might be a clue to help us figure this out.
I like the "towns" theory. Althought I'm not sure how the partner's title fits in.
For you, Bastok is west, and home of the various guilds that could be referred to by your lead/gold clue.
San d'Oria is Northwest (with another North in there, if you're facing the right way...) and the symbol is the Hippogryph.
Then again, it could have to do with all these things, and it's a long riddle/quest of sorts.
Ok, mostly I'm just posting here so I can track the clues others leave....
The fact that SE released in this patch the ability to easily change your title seems to tie in with this... I wondered why they would spend that kind of effort on something that seemed trivial to me.
riddles...i love riddles. Here is my take at it:
1. Purple/Blue
Oviously a reference to the Colors used for the elements. Note the '..an electric, dazzling shade', lightning and Blue is obviously Water.
Reference crystal/day/weather
2. West/Northwest
According to the Starmap and the crafting directions, west is Water (Northwest is Fire).
Lightning dominates Water.
Water dominates Fire
3. Daybreak Gambler
Honestly, this is beyond my comprehension. Maybe talk to the quest giver and see what he says (i doubt that though). Sorry, no ideas yet.
4. The balance distinguishes not between lead and gold
The hippogryph has fair feathers but foul feet
I read this as a clue to opposing elements/abilities. Lead <> Gold is pretty obvious. Feathers <> Feet, the hippogryph flies really good but walking ain't his strength.
If you look at 1 and 2 and the clue in 4. it is pretty obvious what she is trying to say. It is definately a clue to the directions and opposing elements.
Now what can all of this mean?
1. Crafting advice or hint - very possible and it tells you that you have to face the direction your crystal is strong against. I am still holding up my theory that every guild has an element and it does not matter what crystal you use.
Can the OP tell me what guild he currently is enlisted to for GP?
2. Strange aparatus - There have been rumors that those are revealed in one of the ZM missions. Not so sure if this refers to them. Possible though.
3. SE is just bursting our bubbles and confirming the directional elemntal relations.
Those are all repeatable quests? Vampire Hunter D-Minus is one. Maybe you have to do the quest on a specific day and your reward is something else (very unlikely as then the direction does not mean anything). I cant make heads or tails of it....i concede
OK, a couple of things here, these actually helped me learn a great deal.
First of all, with my main character, Amanojyaku, I tried changing title, that didn't alter the fortune. I tried changing job (and likewise, level) and equipment, etc, that did not alter it. So it would seem the fortune you are given is entirely character based, and has nothing to do with your actual variables.
Secondly, I had another friend try it. He got:
Blue.
Northwest.
First rate organizer.
Hippogryph clue.
Third... I logged in my mule, and went to try it. He was a 29mnk, elvaan, from sandoria. His helped me a great deal.
Pale Blue.
A great distance northwest.
Tearjerker.
"Even the best parties must end."
So.... this helps in the following ways:
The directions we were given were not for facing, this time she said specifically "a great distance" so we can say without a doubt it is referring to an actual literal location.
Since there are obviously degrees of distance, saying Northwest, West, or North-northwest can be interpreted as close, relatively. That cuts down on a lot of wondering.
In addition, the final bit I now believe to be a philosophy more than anything. I racked my brain on the hints given and could only come back to the idea that it was a philosophy again and again. Since my monk got something that is more literal than the other 2, I would assume these are "words to live by" instead of a clue pertaining to whatever she is hinting at.
"The balance distinguishes not between lead and gold."
-Simply put, we distinguish the value. Both are metal, both exist and have weight, we put value on it. Learn to look at all things equally.
"The hippogryph has fair feathers but foul feet."
-Nothing, nobody is perfect. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
"Even the best parties must end."
-Easy enough, right? You can't always get what you want. Again, nothing is perfect, live and let live.
I think this has helped me more than anything else. I may try to log in my roomie's character and get another hint, but for now I am going to mark off anything that might be relatively close or far from me in the indicated direction.
If anyone else can please post their fortune, it would help. I really want to figure this out. Since I believe she is referring to something literal, instead of metaphoric, I want to know what it is.
Agreed, completely.
This is what led me to the whole thing to begin with, to be honest. When I saw that there was a fortune teller, and there was something to do with your title, as WELL AS updates to the title system, I knew something was up.
Sorry to disagree but Northeast is Light. Northwest is Fire.
Ok, now with that distance thrown in it does change things a bit. Are the quests for that title somewhat located in that direction?
I am still at work but i will post my Fortune once i get on in about 2h.
Oh, and pensive, I did actually.
I bought 3 core and 3 chips initially to trade, as well as an 80k gold ingot, and 20k gold ore. I ended up with 8 cermet chunks, and 2 lightning clusters. It accepted no combination of anything else in any way whatsoever, nor did it hint at any hidden combo, or identification number. I ruled this out for now.
I think I might have an idea about this.
While wandering to Behemoth's Dominion just to search for new ??? or Notorious Monsters I stumbled across a target which said "Luck Rune". This certainly sounds related to fortunes to me. I have a feeling that lots of different areas have these luck rune type targets in them,, and perhaps you have to click the one corresponding to your directino. Explore Horutoto a bit and see if you can find one. BTW the one I found was in Qufim in the tunnel leading into Behemoth's Dominion.
Of course by the time I finished my post 5 others posted with infomration.
The luck rune sounds very promising. Can anyone confirm if it's just a spot (like the ??? ones) or is there a new image on the terrain that identifies it?
Given your findings Amanoj I'm thinking that this isn't about the strange apparati.
Whoever found that Luck Rune may be on to something.
****THIS IS SPECULATION****
But, did anyone else see the virtue thing in the update?
When it is equipped, new update weapons will sometimes attack twice.
Fortune teller ---> Luck Rune ------> Virtue?
Just tossing out ideas, this is not tested, not verified, not anything, just making connections that MAY exist.
UPDATE: Scratch this.
In the item update, it appears virtues are dropped by Lumorians, so they prolly have nothing at all to do with any of the Luck Runes or the Fortune telling.
First of all, rate up for everyone. Great thread.
Looks like we are onto something. If this in fact involves a quest you have to Duo with a friend finding that luck rune than maybe the last hint is a reference to the jobs you should use.
Before you think i am nuts look at the basic stat for your job and the rings increasing that stat. Every attribute has an element.
STR = Fire
AGI = Wind
You have to find a partner with a specific title, why not also with a specific job?
Just another though.
A gram of gold has exactly the same number of electrons, protons and neutrons as a gram of lead. When you hold a gold coin in your hand you are in essence holding the same exact substance as an equal amount of lead, the only difference is how the individual particles work together.
Compare this to a XP party, the same bad party could be the same good party, the only difference being the dynamics of how they work together.
This perhaps could read "The Peacock has fair feathers but foul feet." It is a antique proverb meaning "Nothing is beautiful from every angle." The symbol for San D is indeed the hippograph. San D has much beauty within its walls, yet a sewer lies beneath.
I passed by a luck rune yesterday when I took a choco from tele-mea to windurst. I found it at H-10 in Tahrongi Canyon in the little mini maze at the bottom of the map. I thought it was some new item so I hopped off my choco and checked ("nothing out of the ordinary"). I hope this helps people if they need to find a luck run west of Mhaura.
Has anyone found any other sort of rune, or luck rune, or any other ??? anywhere?
I am wondering... because in all 3 of my examples, the directions could still be interpreted as the various strange apparati locations.
Purple is Lightning is Purple Chip.
Purple chip, purple machine, horototu.
Horototu is west.
Blue is Water is Blue Chip.
Blue chip, blue machine, Crawler's nest.
Crawlers's nest is NW.
Pale blue is Ice is Clear Chip.
Clear chip, Ice machine, Eldieme.
Eldieme is further northwest.
So far they do still match up. I am looking for more samples and examples if anyone has em.
I am packing a lightning crystal, cluster, and purple chip with me for the exact same reason. :P
Perhaps...partnering with someone with the given title, on the given element's day, and clicking the Rune in the direction given?
Has anyone found any other sort of rune, or luck rune, or any other ??? anywhere?
Luck rune: H-10 tahrongi canyon - West of Mhaura
???: J-10 tahnrongi canyon - a plant that looked withered (may require watering?)
Sorry I checked my reply before and it almost looked hidden.
Wow, very interesting thread, I am going to try to trade my color crystal to the luck rune, and have a friend change there title to whatever is needed and come with me. I think this may spawn an NM or some such. Keep up the good work!
Ordelle's: Green
Crawlers': Blue
Garlidge: White
Wow, this quest sounds so cool. Can't wait to check my fortune later when I get off work, I'll post it then.
Sounds like someone hit the nail on the head already though.
I'm thinking it has to do with the Luck Rune that someone had previously found. You get your fortune, have a partner with that title with you, find the Luck Rune together on the day that is luckiest for you (whatever colour you were told).
Now this is where it gets confusing. What do you do with the Luck Rune? Do you trade something? Do you fight something? I wish I had time to check it out myself. ; ;
"..Lucky Color is Black
...fortune lies a great distance to the Northwest
...perfect partner title = Night Sky Navigator
...words of wisdom: A poor warrior blames his weapons"
And so the plot thickens =)
edit: and this is poking more holes in the strange apparatus theory, as black would be the maze, and the maze sure isn't a "great distance" away.
BUT - The three apparatuses (apparati?) with unknown color are intriguing. A great distance northwest could possibly refer to Fei'yen. Hmmm.
I took a friend with me.
We changed to each others ideal titles.
His was "Northwest" and "Blue" so we went to the Tahrongi canyon luck rune.
We went on watersday, he tried clicking, nothing. Tried trading a blue chip too, nothing. I tried all sorts of stuff, nothing, nada.
We spotted that ??? with the "withered looking sprout" and hes going to try to trade a water crystal/cluster to it... but we can't think of anything else.
I found a luck rune yesterday in Lufaise Meadows. It was not anything special in the landscape or anything. It was found right at the entrance to the Meadows near the vortex to the Dunes. I clicked on it (not having started any new quests) and it said nothing out of the ordinary...
I'll look into this a bit, since I am off of work today.
As far as I know, there are 11 strange apparatusses.
The eight mentioned above, and three newer ones that seemed to be "inactive". At least they were a few months ago. They may have been activated in this update. One of the new apparatuses resides within King Ranperre's Tomb (It is a dark red color, so I'll call it carmine, because I believe that a carmine chip that drops from diremites in Pso'Xja is related.). Another is in Fei'Yin (Cyan, I'm assuming. Cyan Chip drops from Treasure Chests (mimic-things) in Pso'Xja.). The third "other apparatus" is in Ranguemont Pass (It's grey/faded. Grey chip drops from lizards in Pso'Xja.).
Note that I didn't think all this up. I've deducted this from the topic HERE. But here's what I think:
My theory is that the fortune quest is VERY related to the strange apparatuses. And the password is quite possibly the name of any character on your server with the "Daybreak Gambler" title (or the title that you are given.). Their title can change, and the passwords will change. Just what I think. Here's *my* list of apparatuses and chips, just for kicks.
Gusgen: Yellow
Ordelle's: Green
Crawlers': Blue
Garlidge: White
Eldieme: Clear
Maze: Black
Horutoto: Purple
Dangruf: Red
King Ranperre's Tomb: Carmine
Fei'Yin: Cyan
Ranguemont Pass: Grey
Can't wait to see the developments on this.
(I so want to get off work...)
For those who have tried this, do you have a new Quest in your quest log?
Also has anyone w/o CoP tried to get this "quest"? If a person w/o CoP can get this "quest" then we're looking only at non-CoP areas (more than likely). Partially answered due to the Meadows having a rune. If runes aren't related this question is still valid.
Also has anyone received any direction other than West, NW, or NNW (regardless of distance)?
Since Mhaura is pretty much the farthest east on the region map, I'm curious to know if there will be anything different.
Also from the posts I'm showing that we've found 4 luck runes:
Tahrongi Canyon (orginal)
Lufaise Meadows (CoP)
Qufim (original)
A couple direction/distance combonations that have been posted
West
NorthWest
North NorthWest
Great Distance NorthWest
West NorthWest
North
Also the following colors to direction:
West - Purple; Blue; Green
NorthWest - Blue
North NorthWest - Pale Blue
Great Distance NorthWest - Pale Blue; Black; White
West NorthWest - White
North - Yellow
Just a summary so far
::EDIT::
- added Lufaise Meadows information
- added Qufim to Possible Runes
- added White and WNW to the lists
- removed Behemoth's Dominion from possible runes
- added Yellow and N to the lists
- ...too many to list so blah. will still make updates though.
For the "Withered Sprout", there's new water items - a freshwater one and a saltwater one.
I heard they're for sale in Windurst...Ensasa, she's in Waters. Check it out.
Turnerbrown,
You're black and a great deal northwest. When you said it could be Fe'yin it made me think of Xarcabard, where Dark Weather can occur. Maybe poke around Xarcabard and look for a luck rune to check during dark weather? Don't forget about all the tunnels for LB2.
I'd do it myself but I'm at work!
Go go good team!
I think we should start keeping track of Jobs/race and such at the time we received the quest. I'm starting to think the prize at the end of this might be somewhat specific.
Galka/SanDoria/Thief
Black
Far NW
Night Sky Navigator
The poor warrior blames his weapons
Edit: I don't know firsthand, but to the best of my knowledge, passwords for the apparatuses is something that has already been solved, and has to do with very high missions in Promathia.
Not to say this can't have something to do with it, just be aware that an explanation already exists.
That explanation has to do with item replication, however. If this quest IS related to the apparatuses, the requirement of a partner makes me think there would be a different use.
Great thread, definitly gonna keep checking for updates on it as I am doing the FF update.
I find the correlation with the withering plant and the Luck Rune intrigueing (sp?) Has anybody checked to see if the other zone's with the Runes also have a withering plant? I believe the only other confirmed Luck Rune is in Qufim on the way to Behemoths Dominion. **someone who can get online should check**
Just read the post that there are new water items. Since plants use freshwater water someone try to trade that to the Withering Plant maybe.
Also some ideas:
Maybe your ideal partner has to have the same riddle as you. If you get Pale Blue they must have Pale Blue...If you get Earth they must have Earth. This would explain how people with different elements/lucky colors would not be able to do anything interesting.
But contradicting that, maybe your partner must have the element that is stronger (or weaker) then yours. Example being you have the dark riddle and s/he has the light riddle.
Hmmm.... maybe the password is that wierd proverb-y phrase she gives? or is it just fluff like the other fortune tellers?
Side note: do those other fortune tellers in jeuno serve any purpose? >.>
Oh and about that withering plant.... if its in tahrongi it might be for that quest that requires you to find a tahrongi cactus? Cactus is located in the north west area of the map.
Doh. The light bulb just went off.
A hippogryph is a mythical beast - the offspring of a griffon and a horse, whose natural relationship to the other is predator/prey.
The quest giver says nothing about your mate needing anything but that title, however, perhaps the additional "hippogryph" hint is suggesting that you need a person who is elementally opposite.....
A couple things...
I believe that root to be unrelated. On a whim, I suggested to my partner to get some distilled water. He did, and traded it, and it said the sprout started to look better. It then said the sprout did not need to be watered again right now. So... take it how you want, there's more to be discovered on that, but I don't think it has to do with the fortune teller.
The thing is, variables seem to change one by one, not as a set. Someone may have all the same variables as someone else, except the direction, or except the color... so I don't think they are set riddles, exactly, just individual clues or indications of use or purpose.
