I just posted my experiences with this PM a couple of days ago. You can check it out on the missions guide page.

(btw Kalia, we won :D )

This is a good guide :) It would have been helpful to have when we attempted it, but fortunately I figured most of that stuff out without it XD

Also, I'm fairly sure there are other jobs that you haven't listed. On one run we attempted, we fought a Mammet with a G Axe (no, I'm not confusing it with the DRG Halberd). That ******* hit our NIN hard. BLM was the worst of them imo (we didn't know it could be silenced-- mainly bad for the kiter though)... H2H, DRG, and Sword were all pretty easy. As I mentioned before we also had a strange one who would extend his arm and attack like he was shooting something from the palm of his hand. He turned out to be very easy-- we couldn't help but laugh at him.

I'm 1/5 now but I feel that I could do this as many times as I needed now without failure keeping a few things in mind. I won't go over them again XD if you want to see them just read my notes on the mission page.

Depending on your party setup my general recommendation is to combine all of the tactics mentioned above into what I'll call the "If you can't win like this, you just can't win" strategy.

Have a single kite (a good kite) use the aggro trick (as in Super PLD) to kite two mammets while the main party focuses on one (healer helps). At about 3/4 HP (depending on how much offensive power you have) waste the first mammet with 2hours. Everyone should have RR on so you can use that trick if needed. Don't skimp on meds either.

Seriously, if you effectively combine all those strats and still can't win, then you fail at FFXI.

The reason why the PLD strategy in Wingchild's guide works, is because what I said in an old guide I wrote (does anyone have that link? I named it "Aggro 101").

The reason is simple:

A mob decides to attack you if:

1). Its aggressive and notices you.
2). You attacked it.
3). It linked with a mob who was attacking you.

If the mob attacks you because of reasons 1 and 3, your hate level is currently ZERO. The mob does not hate you, it only attacked you pre-emptively. When your hate level is ZERO, the mob does not care if someone cures you, enhances you, or aids you in any way.

If you aggro a mob by rule #2, you have the hate value your action would normally cause (casting Dia, throwing a boomerang, provoking, etc). This is why, as any powerleveller knows, n00b fights a bunny in Valkurm, Bunny A attacks n00b. You spam cure, bunny attacks you. Bunny B sees Bunny A and links. You spam cure on the n00b, Bunny B continues to attack n00b. If you want the n00b to get xp from both bunnies, tell him to switch target, hit bunny B once, then switch back to Bunny A. You can then pull both Bunnies off him.

ARRRRRRRGH!!!

God damn it! Bloody timers! Damn the lot of them!!

Sorry for the tirade, but I'm highly miffed, and so are the rest of my group. We tried a mixture of the Kiting and Zombie strategy, and it was going well.

NIN/WAR
NIN/WAR
DRK/WAR
DRK/THF
WHM/BLM
BLM/WHM

Both kiters fell out in the arena, one near the very edge and another one a little way in. We all had reraise up, and a healthy supply of Hi Potions. We took out the first Mammet just as the group wiped. Fine, we thought, most of us are safely away from the Mammets, so we raised and rested up. Here's where it went pear-shaped. Maybe it never works in Burning Circle areas, but we couldn't Tractor the two NINs closer to us. We took about three minutes longer than we needed here, with people cancelling reraise, trying to be tractored, only for it not towork, then accepting raise.

So, the NIN/WAR who was nearer the middle of the zone took raise, but waited until the coast was clear to use it. The first NIN/WAR went back to kiting, and we unloaded on the second Mammet, and took him down. Then we rushed over to aid the kiter. Transmog went up twice shortly after, but we were still taking his HP down nicely with spells. By this time, the weakness on the second NIN/WAR had worn off and he was back in the frey. With about 30% to, the bloody timer ran out, and we were chucked out of the zone.

:'(

I might have to go and break something now. Excuse me.

Double post. Ouch, naughty me.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Ahem. Suffice to say, a rematch with the same strategy worked nicely. Slightly different team setup.

Mieck (DRK/WAR) (Me
Eriston (RNG/NIN)
Lexikatt (WHM/BLM)
Ellio (BLM/WHM)
Ekkehard (NIN/WAR)
Kudela (PLD/WAR)

First try went badly. I got a nasty chop from the DRG form for over 300 and bought the farm very quickly. No ammount of work could then fell one before we all dropped dead. So, determined to try again, we went back to Jeuno, got Hi-Pots etc, and headed on in again. The fight could not have gone more smoothly. The heavy damage part of the zombie strategy worked well. Blood Weapon + Eagle Eye Shot + Barrage + some fancy Manafonted agaIIs quickly took the first Mammett from 50% to dead. In a stroke of brilliance, whilst we were all pulling back into the tunnel to die, we managed to take the second one out as well. A couple of quick fire weaponskills let loose some Distortion and a chance MB did for him. We all fell pretty quickly after that, but kept our nerve whilst we waited for the third to wander back.

Raise...
Wait out weakness...
Divine Seal + Curaga, and we were all systems go again. Food and buff went up quickly and we marched in to slay him. I still had loads of Hi-Pots, and Yellow Liquids had dropped in abundance from the other two. We thought we were pushing the time close. As you can see in the above post, we ran into that problem last time, but as we landed the last blows on him, the server helpfully informed us that we had taken a mere 20 minutes and 54 seconds to righteouly b0rk our way through the opposition.

Loved the cutscene. Onwards to Diabolos!

...now... Wingchild... where's your guide for chapter 3?

In an addition to the 3 NIN strategy.

This can be done by 3 non WHM mags too. RDMs can be good but BLMs will do in a pinch.

You can even do it with 1 Kiter instead of NIN. The Mamet will die fast enough if you use a good kiter like BST or THF.

What you need is evasion eq and RDM or BLM sub if possible. 5-6 cycles of the elemental wheel will kill the mamet. Have your mage use yellow liquid every 45s to lock it in MNK mode.

Evasion gear + INT eq. The mamets have horrible accuracy and damage as a MNK and you do not need to do physical damage to them, ignoring transmogrification. I did this with NIN NIN RDM BLM DRK BST so it is indeed, possible. Lvl 40-60 for NIN is where the elemental wheel shines.

The mages will need 5 yellow liquids and 3 yagudo drinks. it doesn't harm to bring more though.

Also, the hippos drop light crystals ^_^

SMN/WHM is one of the best kiters. With 3 Yagudo drinks and like 2 ethers, Carbuncle can take on anything >.>;

That's a nice guide, well done~! Just two things I spotted straight away:

1. Giant Scales, the item needed to enlarge Unstable Displacements, are Ex only, not Rare.
2. It's a good idea for mages to bring a few echo drops unless they want to be useless for a while.

I tend to review guides around the one year mark to see if new information has come out. I'll fix this one up when I do spring cleaning. There are a handful of things I can add.

For the super-paladin strategy how would either pld/mnk or pld/pup go?

pld/mnk gets a tad more VIT and more hp. I can't see that as super usefull (well... dodge), but it might be good.

pld/pup if geared right would get an extra heal every .. 30 seconds? Maybe the lost off other stats/abilitys would make this less than ideal, I dunno.

I had an issue while trying a variation of the Super Paladin technique, and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what went wrong...

Our setup was PLD/WAR, BST/NIN, WAR/THF, RDM/NIN, WHM/BLM, BLM/WHM. At first we tried the kiter strategy with no success; Red Mage ended up being a poor kiter. Eventually we agreed to let the PLD aggro the mammets (without voking or claiming as per Super PLD), while I pulled one off to kite it and the WAR pulled one off to bring it back to the rest of the group to kill it.

So I'm running around the circle. The White Mage has been Curing the Paladin with no problems, even getting hit by -ga spells sometimes as the mammet is in BLM form. Going pretty smoothly... I run by the mammet on my kiting circuit and the PLD's mammet casts Thundaga. It hits me, I call his mammet a bizznatch in party chat, and I keep running. My mammet ends up finishing off my jug pet, and by now I'm across the island. I call a new Jug Pet, and for some reason the PLD's mammet comes running after me. I end up dying because of this and we lose. Can't for the life of me figure out how I got hate from the damn thing. Any ideas?

Must be something to do with pets. A Group I was in was also using the super PLD trick, and everything was going smoothly; until I used Spirit Surge. For some reason, I pulled hate from the two unclaimed mobs when I did so.
We wiped.

Thanks wingchild. i dont know if it was mentioned.. but..

Watch out when youre kiting the mammets in warrior form. The TP blade move sucks, but what is almost worse is that they can swing about 3 times in the time it takes to cast utsusemi(sp). Interruption city. most (rdm/nin) kiters are smart enough to dual wield the interrupt down wands.. but I wasnt.. make sure you are.
