Hey there. I thought I'd just drop in here and let some of you who are interested in living in Japan know about a few programs.
I have been living in Japan for 3 months now as part of the JET (Japanese Exchange of Teachers?) program. With this program, you are actually contracted by the Japanese government as an ALT (assistant language teacher) to work in schools here. The most common is english teachers, but I think you can also do the program for Frech, Spanish, and maybe a few other languages. I work as an English teacher at a highschool in Iwaki-shi. It is excellent fun and we make a pretty good amount of money too. For this program, you need to have a Bachelor's degree in something, doesn't matter what, you just have to finish undergrad. Here is the link to the main website:

You can download a copy of the application from the site, but you have to do a little navigating to get to it >.<.
If this program is not for you, there are also several other programs to join, but I'm not really sure about the requirements for them. There is Aeon, Nova, and a few other English tutoring companies here. These are independent companies, so you wouldn't be working for the government. Therefore, you would just have to apply to these as if it was a regular job, and the application process isn't as difficult and time-consuming as with JET. With these organizations, you work in conversation classes which people are paying to go to, so it is a bit different from JET where you are actually teaching at public schools. With these groups, the students will actually be making quite an effort to learn, whereas at my school a lot of the students really just don't care.
But anyways, I hope this is of some use to those of you out there wanting to live in Japan. It is a great experience and I've come to learn A LOT about the Japanese and their culture, including smashing many many many of my previous misconceptions. ; ;
Oh, and by the way, in case you are wondering. You don't have to know ANY Japanese to participate in any of these programs. I studied Japanese for several years before I came here and it helps a lot with getting around and taking care of things, but it is NOT required for these programs.
Anyways, good luck to all. ^^
