Chocobo Digging

First off, Chocobos have hidden skill levels, just like crafting and fishing ~ the maximum level is lv9.

So, what does the skill level do? It reduces the delay between digs and even the zone delay before you can start digging~

However the concern is not the delay between digs, but rather the delay after zone.

Why?

Chocobo concept

Let me explain the chocobo concept first…

In each zone or area, there is a “pool” or “inventory”.

The treasures that can be dug will be stored in the inventory.

Therefore there are limited treasures that can be dug, that explains why you might not dig anything after awhile!

For every 1-2 minutes, a treasure will be added to the inventory!

Now the zone delay is important as there are competitions ~ If someone else dug up all the items before you… >< have to wait for 1-2minutes before you can dig one item T_T

3 stacks of Gysahl Greens is enough for one average chocobo ride~

You don’t have to sponge your gil for too many stacks as you will dig mostly nothing ^^;

Each chocobo ride lasts for 30minutes… So if you wait 1 minute for each item, you can dig up to 30 items!

Once you understand the chocobo concept, you’ll realize that chocobo riding clothes are important!

Following the Goblin digger!

Another way to dig items than to wait items to pop in the inventory… is… to…

Follow Goblin Diggers! ^^

I didn't believe this at first
but a very nice Japanese friend told me to be patient and try it… I have to emphasise, must be Patient!

You can find Goblin Diggers around the center portion of Buburimu Peninsula and almost anywhere else… The items which Goblin Diggers hide are very different from what you can dig normally! Like Goblin cups, Goblin Dices, Gold Beastcoins and all that…

Skill levels

Like I said, there are 9 levels to it and there is a “Promotion test” item in order to proceed to the next level~

If you level up your chocobo skill, there is no status to show or what so ever… Then how do you know your level?

Level Area/zone delay (sec.) Digging delay (sec.)

Lv 0...............40.........................16

Lv 1 ..............40.........................11

Lv 2...............40..........................6

Lv 3...............40..........................0

Lv 4...............35..........................0

Lv 5...............30..........................0

Lv 6...............25..........................0

Lv 7...............20..........................0

Lv 8...............15..........................0

Lv 9...............10..........................0

To find out your level, just take a stop watch and time between digs or zones ^^

you ask, how to level up skill??? ??? The answer was… Is dig~ and dig… and dig more!

You have a dig a certain amount of “Promotion skill test item” before you can make it the next level ><

So what are the items I have to dig to promote? Keep that in mind that it doesn’t mean you have leveled up your skill when you dug up the item… you have to get plentiful of them ^^

Level..........Test Item

Lv0............Bone chip

Lv1............Rattan Lumber

Lv2............Cinnamon

Lv3............Danceshroom

Lv4............Rosewood Log

Lv5............Puffball

Lv6............Petrified Log

Lv7............King Truffle

Lv8............Spirit Grass

Lv9............------------

So your all ready to level up the skills… but where to find these items?

Here's where... Yuhtunga Jungle will bring your skill up to level 7 if you dig for a very reasonable period of time! For the final test, you can dig Spirit Grass in Yhoator Jungle~~ Therefore they are all around Kazham ^^

Elemental Ores

I heard of a rumor that Elemental Ores can be dug? Those ores can sell up to 200000gil in the Auction House...

Fortunately… I know how and where to dig them but beware, they are not easy to find and are very rare...

You don’t need skill levels to dig a rare item, that’s for sure

There are now 5 places where you can dig elemental ores…

Yuhtunga Jungle
Yhoator Jungle
Altepa Desert
The Boyahda Tree
The Sanctuary of ZiTah

The elemental ores will pop in the inventory at special occasions…

You need to find a weather forecaster who will tell you about the weather in any of the 3 areas…

What you are looking for… is double weather ^^

For e.g. the weather for Yhoator Jungle for tomorrow will be sunny AND a chance of sandstorm may appear

So when you head towards Yhoator Jungle the next Vanadiel day, you will see a double fire symbol around your clock/map portion… This is when you will get a chance of digging up a Fire ore…

Currently, you can find Earth Ores at East/West Altepa Desert, Fire Ores at Yhoator/Yuhtunga Jungle and Lightning Ores at the Boyahda Tree or Sanctuary of Zi`Tah…

***If you ever get an elemental ore… Please sell it at a reasonable price and please do not lower it!***

I hope this will help you. This guide is largely based of second hand information but i have re-written it to make it read and look better.
Thank you to Mina on Titan.

how do you know you have to dig a certain item to go up in lvl? My skill is still lvl 0 and I have dug up a bone chip before.

Very good guide! I haven't really tried chocobodigging yet, but you sparked my interest. ^^b

I have one question however.

Can you really ride chocobo in the Boyahda Tree? I allways have to dismount before i zone from Sanctuary of Zi'Tah to the Boyahda Tree. o.O

It's easier if you have chocobo riding gear.I like chocobo digging, it's more fun than farming for me, what i do is i check the weather reports and if theres an ore chance i'll head there straight away, if theres not then i'll usuall y head on down to Buburimo or Yhoator and just dig my little heart out.

So far i have got 2 ores (fire and earth) and i'm a level 7 digger which isn't to shabby...

So do you actually see them bury items or do you just follow them around and /dig every now and then? That's an interesting thing I've never heard of until now.

Yes! The goblin diggers have a digging animation! The first time i followed on i was walking quite slowly behind it, digging nothing unusual and then suddenly the digger stopped did this wierd crouching thing and then moved on. I dug on the spot were the digger was and i got a gold beastcoin!
Damn near shat myself when the digger turned around though, i thought he was going to attack me...

I am certain that you cannot ride a chocobo in Boyahda Tree. Not sure where you got this information but dont just copy and paste if you havent actually dug there.

Nice guide otherwise.

Theres more information on what you can dig up at this site:

I don't think you got my point. I'm not running out of time, but i think i can't zone into the Tree without dismounting. Or maybe i'm wrong, haven't really paid attention.

I'm most likely going there to party or farm in Zi'Tah tonight. I will try then. ^^

Also thank you for the interesting news about the Gobllin Diggers. I had no idea about this, something else I will also try tonight. Very nice of you to share your gil making secrets. ;-)

Yes i just checked some sources and i am sorry for misleading you, it is not possible to dig in Boyahda tree.

If you are after goblin diggers (gold beastcoins baby!) then head to buburimu as there is quite a nice concentration of them there.

Ok, that's what i thougt. Thank you for quick reply.

I just got a good idea. I will use my RNG and widescan to hunt down those Diggers. =)

This appears to be from Mina's chocobo digging page which is found at: http://minaffxi.tripod.com. This is the best theory i have found yet concerning chocobo digging, but realize there is still some debate over certain issues.

Some are sure that there are "promotion items" and some are not so sure. They have leveled up in places like the altepa desert where things like rattan lumber cannot be found. The common retort to this is that it takes only one promotional items to be dug up and when a certain number of total digs have taken place the promotion item kicks in.

Having said all that, my chocobo digging has been terrible. I have never dug in a zone that didnt appear to be "dug up" as i have waited a minimum of one minute between items and up to 5 minutes between items no matter how many times i have used the dig command. So when i see people digging every few seconds my question is, Why? They apparantly know something I dont (and that is a real possibility, i have only leveled once) but constant digging seems to be counterproductive unless level ups are determined by total digs instead of total successful digs (kinda like fishing, you dont have to catch the fish to skill up off it).

To make matters worse, digging appears to be super profitable at higher levels, so those that actually know something keep the information to themselves so the "treasure pool" in a certain zone will have less people digging in it. If someone has some real answers about how long to wait between digs or the difference between a normal zone and a "dug up" zone could you at least post some hints here? I will continue digging when the fishing is bad in rabao but would rather know what i'm doing rather than just randomly hoping something good might happen.

If you do follow the Diggers, you might consider getting the Mhaura quest.

Cunning. Good luck catching those pesky diggers

Personally i dig every minute, if i do not find anything within 5 digs i move on (in between for a bit of fun i time myself running between points in the zone and try to beat my time each time i'm there, it takes away the tediousness and it's great practice for when they add chocobo racing! ^^).
My advice to you would be to dig in the higher level zones, i've found that in Yhoatar and Yuhtunga are the most lucrative places to dig but you have to be careful not to get kicked off your chocobo because walking home is not fun.

Dude he gave credit to the original site and this post is incredibly useful. Any thing that gets people talking about the lesser known parts of the game (i.e. the choc leveling system) is extremely beneficial. Since there are no standard guides to go by, word of mouth is the best avenue we have for finding out how to maximize our time playing this game. Getting help from a level 7 choc digger sure beats the hell out of another elemental ore recipe thread. . . .

er dude can you actually read? that site does not use the same words i did, i took my information from a few site and wrote it out again, does that constitute stealing? I thought bringing a lesser known skill that i use to the board would be better than all the **** you fucking write so go fuck off and do us all a favour.

#25REDACTED, Posted: Aug 14 2004 at 1:03 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) no thats fine... just he didn't give proper credit like links or big bold letters letting people know it is not his info... most people will read that and think he came up with it and will praise and him and blah blah blah... unless you came up with stuff by yourself you damn well should give links and proper credit to those who actually researched and found out the info.
#26REDACTED, Posted: Aug 14 2004 at 1:04 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) not the same words? hahahahahaah oh yeah i forgot you "rewrote" it... good job there that counts for something.. shut it fignuts.
