Pl's are ok, but shouldn't be used too much. I was unfortunate enough to party (as a whm), from about lv 12-27 with what seemed like constant PL'ing. Every party i joined seemed to have one, making my job very dull.
I also remember trying to pl someone (as a rdm) whilst wearing blaze spikes (it was the only way i could hurt the mob) ><

haha, in dunes, yes a PL can be a tank, I do it all the time on rdm, it works like this, the mages/melee's take hate>>> I cure that DMG,and get alot of hate, coming from each member, and then its easy sailing from there on. But yeah, you lose hate every so often,and have to recure a few people, but PL tank is very easy to do.
Of course it's easy; we all know the Dark Side is easier. Quicker. But not stronger. Parties that let the PL tank in the Dunes get no evasion skillups. Tanks don't learn how to tank (and, yes, you need to learn how to tank for each new job; NINs don't tank anything like PLDs do). "Recure a few people"? When the PLer loses hate (which he *will* do, because he can't do anything to hold hate once he has it) the mob will head straight for the DDs. Straight for the BLM, if you have one. If the BLM gets one-shotted, recuring doesn't help much. That's unlikely, granted, but can you recure fast enough to keep him from being two-shotted, which is much more likely? Frankly, I hate PLs to begin with, and would be happy to never be in PL'd party again.
Pl'ing is simple, as the levels get higher of the pt you are Pl'ing tho,it does get harder, but dont come off rude to me about how 'easy" it is. here is how you do it, have the WAR or tank,voke at the beginning,that makes it easy for like 1.4th hp,then it attacks the mages most likely, boo hoo cure II and I got hate back. and its very easy, cure when its needed = hate
the people in the pt can tanke alot of DMG,and I can cure that DMG, resulting in basically the same hate they get(but wait I actually get more since the mob turns to me). my fave way to do it tho, Is to have the tank voke at the beginning, then get near half HP, then I cure 2 him,bam instant hate spike. when that wears off and it attacks the mages, I cure the mage and bam hates back, course thats for newb partys like dunes,in other areas (qufim jungles etc) when I lose hate,the tank will voke when it goes for the mages,and lose hp,and I cure him at half life again,and repeat that process for easy pl tanking.
Or you can just PL and not tank, hell you can do this with pt's very close to your level , long as you dont take hate.
Last thing is, in 'ok" partys there is alot of damage thrown around,and the WHM cant get it all, so i get what the whm does,and what they cant,therefore giving me easy hate keeping abilities.
As you stated though, it does harm the pt's "skill growth" and skill levels, making them worse in the long run,but meh,sometimes its exp> skill lvling, only way i see this bad,is helping underskilled pt's (dunes has alot of this). and people with weapons/magic 5-10 skill levels below cap, as the WHM can still cure, the PLD can still hit the mob, and everything can go on as normal.it really isnt hard for a whm to cure someone before I do, besides,you dpnt have to be curing like a maniac for skill ups. sure sure PL is bad because of skill level loss,but this is mainly for the WHM only,as other jobs do not do "the pl job" healing,and whm can still throw out cures.
this is my opinion, so disagree with me thats cool,anyways

thats my thoughts on the issue, as for yours,yeah PL's can be bad in a pt, usually in good PT's,but bad ones dwindling on a thread,or dont have enough cures going around, or taking too much dmg, a PL can keep that together, at the loss of WHM and PLD's healing skill.
yep, PL is bad in the long term. but can be a great help in the short.

lmao great stuff here now to share a moment when i was a noob with another noob: I was a lvl 5 rdm at the time, and bought a cure from an npc store.
Noob1: I got this Cure spell for 1k in the Auction House
Noob2(me): Really? I got mine for 300 gil(or whatever the price was in the magic shop in sandy)
Noob1: Wow your lucky to find someone put up a cure scroll for only 300gil

Lv 11 PUP/ Lv 5 WAR is on the boat to Mhura and a sea monk spawns, so he decides to attack it and after it has hit him twice he calls for help,he was just lucky a Lv 75 blm was there to save him (i was only lv 13 so i couldn't help really, you'd think someone who has at least reached a high enough lv to unlock PUP would know not to attack a sea monk at lv 11.
And now a noobish moment for me:
My first time ever on the boat to Mhura it's attacked by Pirates and im a lv 15 WAR and i decide to fight Silverhook....I was new, i didn't know any better :P

Okay, Okay I have to come clean. I guess file this under X-Box 360 noob.
Upon the release of ToA I upgraded to the 360 which of course erased all my macros. With all the new areas to explore and all the new things to do I didn't write all the new macros right away. Then, upon becoming Private Second Class, I hastily wrote all my macros for my LS's first assault which was to be Lebros Cavern.
Needless to say, one macro was incorrectly written....
So the assault begins with us attacking the first brittle rock. I go to cast fire III on the wall, and just go about my merry business excited to be doing assault missions. Then I see my party members saying, "Sit," or "Stop," or "WTF are you doing?" I pay no attention, as I shuffle through my new macros, not realizing what was going on during a very long cast time.
Then we suddenly end up back at the staging point and a failed first assault. I then ask, "What happened?" The response to which - edited for a PG rating - was "You cast Escape on us!"
Turns out that in my haste writing all new macros on deadline pressure and for reasons unknown to me, I wrote under my Fire III macro:
/ma "Escape" <me>
I had all my equip macros set properly at least <.<'
I still take alot of heat for that one.

Quite a long time ago, leveling some job I can't even recall in the dunes, I had a lvl 14RDM no sub in pt. He was the main healer for the party... I happened to have some juice on me, was going to give him some. I said "Here, take this." And offered to trade. He accepted, and I accidentally cancelled the trade.
He says, "Did you try to steal from me?!"
One time while planning a Promyvion ENM run (all 3 back to back), we formed an alliance to facilitate a safe trip up. Unable to find a second whm, we asked the smn if he would be willing to main heal his party. Here's roughly how that convo went down:
SMN00B: "No, I'm a DD only SMN. I 2 hour."
Alliance Leader: "Well, we really need a healer, and we can't afford to wait 2 hours between each run so you can 2 hour..."
SMN00B: "I DD only."
Me: "If that's the case, why sub whm at all? Why wouldn't you sub blm for the extra MP?"
SMN00B: "Whm sub has more MP"
Me: "Uh.. you fail at life. Blm sub gives more MP. But that's beside the point. We need you to heal."
SMN00B: "I'm rank 10, I think I would know which sub gives the most MP"

Here's an occurance that deeply disturbed me..
I was leveling BLU in the dunes, eager to try my hand at tanking. I had perfect gear, all the spells equipped that added VIT, and tav tacos (For the MP boost as well as DEF, I know there are higher percent lower cap def foods at this lvl)
I get a pt invite, I say "Is it ok for me to tank?"
PT Leader: "Sure"
I join pt, we pull a mob...
PT leader war no sub randomly vokes...
Me: "Um, I thought I was tanking? I'm better equipped for the job"
Him: "Sorry"
Next fight, he vokes again, several times
I start to wonder if he's not only a noob, but a JP one, so I say in autotrans "<Provoke> <No thanks.> <me> = <meat> <shield>"
Him: "Sorry"
Next fight, same thing, plus I'm not getting cured and almost die
Me: "Ok, I'm the one tanking. The other war needs to stop voking. And the whm needs to be curing, I was almost dead"
Then Coz (forgot what job he was playing) steps in to comment..
Coz: "You need to stop barking orders"
Me: "Excuse me? This party is chaos. It won't work with 2 near dead tanks"
Coz: "What level is your main?"

I remember when I first started this game as a Taru BLM, i was in Windy talking to NPCs saying "Hey can you fight some really strong monsters so I level fast?"

What's funny is this guy who's name won't be mentioned picked on me and then a month and a half later at level RDM66/BLM33 I was partying with him and I let him die.

I go outside to fight some monsters not knowing what 'Check' was and attack a Rarab, i got owned.
When I went back outside I saw I had like 20-30 HP and I thought WOW Taru suck... then I realized this game doesnt give you extremely high HP like in FFVIII.
I saw this guy named Sinsyth running by I was liek Excuse me, can you help me? These monsters all kill me and he explained 'Check' and gave me a pearl. What's funny is this guy who's name won't be mentioned picked on me and then a month and a half later at level RDM66/BLM33 I was partying with him and I let him die.

I was levelling my Ninja in Qufum and this person (RDM22/WHM01) was following me, /follow though so I said stop following me she is like can I join your party i was like No we're full. She kept spamming that then she shoutted "OMG NECRO IS *** HE WONT LET ME JOIN HIS PT" Half the people were like "You are a stupid Noob -_-" She wouldn't take me off /follow so I ran towards evil weapons and changed my equipment and she ran right into them and a Giga, she died and she was like OMFG IM TELLING MY MOM!

My own dumb Noob saying:
I was a level 1 or 2 Warr on the 360 beta at the time.
I was in West Ron and I saw a Orc that said "tough".
I had played Final Fantasy's in the past and thought, "I know how to play better then most people, I can take it"
After I got owned, I layed there dead for 45min trying to get someone to heal me.
People would walk by and laugh or say "just head back".
I finally did and went back to West Ron and /sh "how come know one helps anyone in this game. I would heal you if you were dead"
ROTGLOL!!!!!!! So dumb!!!

ok here is a funny story. Heading to Selbina a noob is standing on the deck when the sea horror pops. The noob quickly runs up to the cabin and gets in. then he goes to the windo to look at the sea horror....well it sees him too. The sea horror goes up the stairs and to my surprize opens the caben door goes in and one hit kill this poor guy lol Funnest damn thing I ever saw.

I was watching my bf in a pt leveling his nin, the leader was like a 58-ish WHM. Lets pt know they'll be leveling in "Valley of Shadows" oooOooOoo
whm dies on the way there of course, and later on asks if Tractor can be cast on ppl alive. My bf didn't even say anything just freaked out laughing, ah good times.
