My Job TimelineFollow

#1 Jan 28 2004 at 4:59 PM Rating: Decent
I am getting FFXI in March, when it comes out for the PS2. Recently, in anticipation, a group of friends and I have been forming our party. Working out who's going to be the healer, the tank, the DPS, etc. When thinking of what race I should be and jobs I should have, I came up with this. Please tell me if this "timeline" of jobs I have planned out sound ok:

Elvaan, Male, Medium Build (Face 1, Hair B in the Character Make Trial on the official site)

Theif to level 18
Switch to Theif/Monk
Theif to level 30
Unlock Samurai, Switch to Samurai/Theif
Samurai to level 30
Switch to Dragoon/Theif
Dragoon/Theif to level 60
Switch to Dragoon/Samurai

And that's as far ahead as I have planned so far. My idea with this list of jobs was, when I hit level 60 and reach the job combo that I really want (Dragoon/Samurai), I will be dealing ridiculous amounts of damage (due to the Samurai's TP boosts) but not taking any hate (due to the Dragoon's Jump). The reason that I chose to wait until level 60 to start that job combo is because I have been reading on different forums that Samurai is a useless sub-job to a Dragoon unless you have Dragoon at least 60, and Samurai at least 30, because level 30 is when the Samurai gets it's Meditate skill and gives a much bigger TP boost.

Please tell me your thoughts on this "timeline" of jobs. Any criticism would be welcome, but tell me how to fix the problem.
Thanks for reading :)

P.S.
In the party my friends and I are planning, we need 1 more player. We already have a Tank, White Mage (Main Healer), Red Mage (Support Healer), Me (^ classes above), and another DPS (Damage Per Second). We are searching for a 6th member that can add some DPS to our party. We're preferably not looking for any more Elvaan or Hume, just because we already have 2 of each in the party. I know it sounds stupid (and in a sense racist lol) but we decided that we would like a galka, taru, or mithra to round out the party. If you would like to join, please contact me for details over AIM at TenaciousDuo87. Thanks :)

Your plan definitely has merit. But i would suggest being open to change. You might find that you will enjoy a different job combo. Also, I wouldnt say that Dragoon/Samurai is useless under 60/30. Thieves don't really start to shine until lvl 30 or 33 either. For a 6th person, you might want to find some one who would like to be a bard or have on of your mages get bard as an ADV job. Good luck. I admire you for being able to wait until March.

If your end product will be Drg/Sam, I suggest leveling something other than monk or thf first. You'd best start with warrior, and stick with a polearm to keep that ready. That way even if when you hit 30, you go samurai, you have one of the three weapons they use already leveled. Especially since you'll probably be using GKT mostly when you hit samurai. I just hit 30 and started samurai recently. And you're going to need a lot of help on the Samurai quest. Best make some uber friends ;)

Thanks :)

Well I may be a warrior instead of theif, but we already have a tank in the group. Wouldnt 2 warriors be a bit of a waste? Also, about training weapons, my friend said that his brother got Great Axe from an F to A+ in like 30 mins.. Originally I was considering being a warrior, but then when he told me that I figured "I might as well make money as a theif"

Also, yeah I have an uber-ish friend. The guy's brother I'm speaking of (one of the party members) is a level 50 monk... would that be enough?

You wrote:

Remember, once you get Sub Job quest, Monk won't auto-matically be level 9 (or whatever level). You will need to go to Monk/Thief, level Monk up to 9 (or whatever level you want, 15 is what I reccomend), and then switch back to Thief/Monk.

So it would be like this:

Thief to level 18
Switch to Monk/Thief
Monk to level 15
Switch to Thief/Monk
Thief to level 30

Then you would have a 30Thief/15Monk.

The only advice I can offer is to wait till you actually get the game to make any definite decisions. When I first got it, I was deadset on becoming a Drg/Sam myself, starting out as a monk. I'm almost ready for advanced jobs now, and what class do I REALLY want to play? A bard!

So while it's great to plan ahead and try and get some sort of "job timeline" set up, don't forget that you may not even have fun as a Drg and end up as a different class entirely!!

On a small side note, a second War(main or sub) is not a waste. Secondary tanks are important depending on what you're fighting. It's a lot easier to manage hate when you have 2 provokers.

I would also like some input on my timeline:

war to 18
monk/war to 15
war/monk to 30
sam/war to 37
monk/war to 60
monk/sam to 75

hopefully i will get a 15thf in there somewhere for nm/farming/bcnm or something

thanks in advance
