My friend is a paladin, and I am about to hit 30 and want to know the best damage dealer so we can be a better team. (I am currently a War/theif and do not want to switch to BLM even though I know it is really powerful).
So I could either be a dragoon, samurai, ranger, or dark knight.
I am not really considering dragoon or sam because post 60 I hear they are not as good as Dark knight.
But Dark Knight is not so good until 60 and then it is still weaker then ranger.
So I am thinking that ranger would be the best choice.
- it deals a lot of damage
- From what I hear i can level it up to 30 fairly quickly, even quicker with him there to heal me
Keep in mind that I am a Hume, so I was thinking of going Ranger/Ninja with 2 archers knives and alot of dex equipment such as leaping boots (already have). What do you guys think?
I also make pretty good gil between cooking and mining (mostly mining) right now I have 130k gil.

Don't forget to buy a good Bow and Arrows / Gun and bullets.
RNG will do the most damage, but they do it by throwing gil at the mob. This might not be a problem for you though.

I seen a level 60 DRK do 700+ Damage with Guillotine. Your call though. Atleast that way you don't waste as much money. Let me put it his way. Even with the PLD using Vorpal Strike, Flash, AND Provoke, it wsa still a task to take the agro off the DRK..
Dragoon / Samurai is supposed to be a really good combo for higher levels

I would say this....i think a GREAT combo....is DRK/THF...I personally like DRK better than DRG...just because it's cooler, IMO? =)
But yeah, when you soul eat, you kinda draw a lot of hate, and I have no experience with Guillotine...but i'm guessing with last resort, soul eater, and Guillotine, u can do some crazy damage....
But the reason I suggest THF, is that you can stack sneak AND trick, for some REAL nasty dmg...but also...u can just transfer the hate using trick to the PAL or the main tank =)...although if you are going to transfer the hate, sneak atk might not work =)...(gluck getting the tank to tank from behind =)) but yeah...
