Ah.. the smell of elitism at it's finest. Are you aware that the same caricature you're painting of PS2 owners is most likely the same one the JP people applied to you?

Oh, you're going to run and hide in some high level area, so the scary, SCARY n00bs don't hurt your precious little mind? Pfft. There are n00bs in KHAZAM, and some of you are most likely part of them. What is to be gained if all the people with knowledge of the game, withdraw from those who seek it? Sure, one can learn without a teacher, but the process is most cretainly harder.

I wish I could save this topic and all like it, so that when you finally crawl out of your ivory towers, full with self-importance, and have the nerve to complain about how the PS2 n00bs are acting, I can show you how they got that way:

You, and all like you who were too damn uber to stop questing for the almighty level, and school a new person.

Whats your point? I dont like hanging out with snot nosed kids even though they may grow up to be wonderful adults someday. I like my tower, thank you very much. We were all noobs at some point and still are in alot of ways. And Im sure plenty of people avoid me/us just for that reason. Seems reasonable to me. And there is nothing wrong with the word noob for all the PC police here. Im a noob and proud of it. I think noob should become a word like ***** has. Used to be a bad word until homosexual community embraced it and made it trendy. So when someone yells NOOB! at you just say "Yes I am! And proud of it!"

What's funny is I know some 14-15 year olds that rival many Japanese players. And they had the NA version so no headstart for them.

I have a theory that those children's parents may have made some bad choices if letting junior play a computer game 8 hours a day is their idea of parenting. Not neccesarily true, but I suspect it.

Yeah I am expecting a lot of ps2 players. I played eqoa on the ps2 a lot, and I have a lot of friends there; it seems that upwards of 80% of the games population is a lock for ffxi. I also play socom, or used to rather, and I have met a lot of people there who have never even played mmorpgs before that are going to get it because they are final fantasy fans. A lot of the people do own decent pcs, although some don't, but even my friends who have good computers are waiting for the ps2 version simply because they are console gamers and prefer the consoles. In fact, I couldn't convince any of my friends to try the pc version with me!

Anyway just wanted to explain why I think there will be A LOT of new players, and that thinking there won't be because a lot of the ps2 crowd already has PCs is a mistake (imo).

I have ten good friends joining that I played socom or eq with, and I can't wait for them to join and help them out...all my work will pay off when they don't have to spend 3 days begging for skull groups or saving for lvl 20 armor. :)

I think it will be a little crowded, and perhaps inconvenient and sometimes annoying, but I am looking forward to the release. And the more we help, the easier the transition will be for everyone involved.

That mule idea for PS2....hmmmmm seems pretty good.

As long as the more experienced players (NA or JP) helped all of us at one time during our noobness and still ongoing noobness (NotCoach). I was just in Valk last night and gave some pulling lessons to some upcoming warriors. It's not hard and every player you help to better themselves the less you have to worry about trains and dimwitted players. Take a damn second of your time and give a hand or some advice. Yes I know some people get all pissy saying "Don't tell me what to do or how to play the game", so leave them be and they'll learn there own lessons. By dying over and over and watching there friends advance past them. So mages help newer players know how and when to cast. Warriors, give some pull and provoke order lessons. It'll only chain out from one person helping another. Sorry for ramble, just my 2 cents.

Personally I'm gonna be farming and telling all the new players to know where I am and go straight to where I hang out to be saved. Every death avoided is useful. This week I saved quite a few low-levels that decided to explore the tough of part of Ranperre's tomb.

Then there were those that didn't feel like taking my advice.

"Watch out for these rock-eaters there, they cast stonega, they're more dangerous than what you're used to".
- no response, tank provokes 10 seconds later, two stonegas later their black mage is dead, tank has 5% health left and manages to run out of the casting range.
"Well, sorry you didn't take my advice..."

-My girlfriend can play with me in the same world without having to own 2 computers, one of the best ideas in gaming this decade. Cross platform, its about time!

Thats what i thought till i spent 20 hours playing the game... Its just so damn boring! They should pay us to play this game!
Damn I leveled down again... But that bumble bee was a decent challange!

I'll be honest. Originally my goal was to get leveled up to get out of Bastok before the influx happened.

Now my opinion has changed a bit. After receiving help at various point from higher level characters, I'd like to return some of that help. I've learned to be a decent tank (still learning and taking advice, though) by listening to other players. I had a high level Japanese player help us get Magic Skulls in Gusgen.

It's an ego boost, but I remember how much we respected that silent Paladin in Gusgen. He didn't have to do what he was doing, but he was helping out 5 English speaking players with no thought for what he'd get out of it. He didn't stand to get anything. He was just helping out.

Do I want to spend all my time coaching newbies? No, but I wouldn't mind taking time to help out and make them worthwhile and contributing members.

I'll still look down on those things I see occasionally today, such as "/sh LOOKING FOR POWERLEVEL!" But I'd be glad to help folks out, and even take on playing other classes at lower levels just to assist in the development and coaching of newbies.

Nah, I'm not being completely generous. The reason for this is because the FFXI environment has been one of the more polite, positive gaming environments I've seen online and I want that to continue. If we all abandon the lowest level folks, they're going to be misbehaving and misplaying when they join you at the higher levels. Best to nip that in the bud when you seem like a god to them in shiny armor and with advanced classes.

Just my thoughts. If anyone has a linkshell for this purpose on Siren, let me know.

I'd rather help them instead of making fun of them.

After all, everyone was a noob once. Not to mention that having advanced jobs doesn't make anyone an experienced player in NA yet (well, unless you acquire them without high level's help). Thus, there is no reason to avoid the players from PS2.

I, for one, will take my PLD/WHM to Qufim and Dunes to help whenever possible. I probably will not help them to acquire advanced jobs and/or quest items, but I will raise the dead and eliminate Banshee/Wights/Elemental/Bogy...etc. Yet, if possible, i will share my experience with them as well.

Again, there is no reason to avoid them in Qufim or Dunes.

While walking through EBGames the other day, I overheard the clerk talking to someone about how he really should wait for the PS2 version for FFXI to come out, because the PC version is just too cumbersome, with having to use the keyboard.

I wanted to jump in and say, "I use the keyboard! I LOVE the keyboard! The keyboard is my friend!"

But I didn't when I then heard them say, "Yeah, Final Fantasy will be good when it's given out for free. *chuckle chuckle*"

?!

So, I think there will be many new people coming to the game when the PS2 release is out, if only because there are some people who listen (rightly or wrongly) to their local EB Games guru, who tells them to wait for it. Also for kids who don't have good computers to play it but can talk their parents into buying the 100 dollar harddrive/game.

Personally, I hope we PC-North Americans are as nice to the PS2-North Americans as the Japanese players were/are to us. Sure, they may be "n00bs" but - so what. We all started the same. Like someone else in this thread said, there are still dork's out there in Kazham right now. I see no difference between old dorks and new dorks. Except new dorks can be guided into being non-dorks. Old dorks are set in their ways. ;)

If someone new is doing something stupid, just let them know what they're doing that may be wrong. Getting upset at them or yelling at them for their newness just generates bad feelings and doesn't solve anything. That newbie today may be your LS Best Buddy tomorrow. :)

Which also does not say that all newbies are created alike! Some newbies are more newbie than others. If the person has played an MMORPG before, they may be more etiquette-wise than someone who just got their shiny new PS2 this Christmas! :)

And naturally, the person's personalty plays a big role. If they won't take constructive criticism... well, we've all run into people who already don't take that. They can all just group together! ;)

But yeah - I can't wait until I run by someone and they go - "A lvl 30 is helping us! Awesome! We're not worthy, we're not worthy! *bow, scrape, kneel*" -- after all, I did it when I was low level! :)

*giggle*

Yeah, I'll help noobs a bit. When I'm leveling my sub, and I'm at comparable levels, I'll fight alongside them as an equal, and impart my wisdom, but when I'm leveling my main class at high levels, that time is all mine. I don't get to play often, and I'll be busy questing for the almighty level.

BTW, rock on NotCoach, I like my tower, too. Someone else laid my foundation, so I don't mind laying the foundation for others, but you've got to build your own damn tower, right? I built it, I'm going to sit in it.

I do not see the PS2 influx being as awful as some people think it will be. On the other hand, I am going to have to fight the temptation to respond to people asking for help with "(I don't understand.) (English) ^^".

Unfortunately I do help people, a lot. I generally spend at least three or four evenings a week helping people get keys for Kazham, and normally one night a week helping people get magicked skulls in Gusgen. This doesn't leave me any time to level my character or farm for items, but I can't say that I am in a rush to level my char anymore. (Look at all of the "Red Mages should never ever melee or they are mean and horrible people who do not care about their party's best interests" threads in the RDM section, and try to guess why.) I think that I probably should go /anon for the few weeks and try to build up as much money as I possibly can before the new wave hits. I at least want to get Dispel before I go back to the horror of leveling.

i'll be glad to get it for the ps2, it'd be great for running a mule.

My PC is a bit of a bear to have running 24/7 right now

lots of power hungry parts and watercooling keep me wary of running it without supervision:

550watt PSU
9800pro w/c
2.8c @ 3.5ghz w/c
2x raptors aircooled

compared to running a PS2 that'd cost me 200$ to replace it's no contest. When i'm actually playing though, i'd rather sport the 1280x1024 resolution my 191T monitor employs

I'm torn...

I've been playing MMORPG's for quite a while and after having played EQOA with the PS2 crowd on and off for almost a year I can honestly say, other than a few good players who are friends, I hope very few of them make the transition to FFXI. It has to be the WORST community I have ever been a part of. Fortunately the mechanics of FFXI discourage a lot of the forms of "griefing" that were prevelant there (ninja looting, kill stealing, camp stealing, training, etc.).

BUT, if they come, I will try to help them because we will all suffer if we don't.

And don't discount their possible impact. Sixty million installed PS2's. If only 1 in 100 play FFXI that's another 600,000 potential players.

Very happy I can turn Shout off!!! Get ready...
