I mean, I suppose it's fun for some, but useless to people like me. A thief's main advantage is from Sneak Attack, but the benefit is that a monster isn't always facing you, and even if you're soloing, you can usually get the first attack. A human opponent will always be facing you.

So, if you're a thief... PvP won't work for you. Not as I can see it, anyway...

I've never been big on PvP either, and especially not Player Killing that I've heard about on other MMORPGs. At least with FFXI, it seems like PvP will be consensual.

PvP to me seems like a waste of time, and is just one big d**k measuring contest. So your character can beat mine, big deal I say.

It's party vs party I believe

my question is, how will provoke work? what will stop black mages and rangers from nuking each other instantly?

On your thief question, well, backstab the enemy party member who isn't facing you.

Sneak attack before you engage then say "hi" to anyone you want. They won't sit still so it'll be a bit interesting.

Yeah WHMs are going to be nailed by ranged/BLM and the tanks are going to be pretty well untouched. Still imagine a party of PLDs and RNGs.. that'd be hard to stop, especially if VOKE had an effect.

Read up on it before you start sceaming no PvP. (not bashing anyone directly in this post but i seem to see people that have had bad experiences in other games with PvP seem to have a knee jerk reaction to any kind of PvP)

PvP doesnt equal Player Killing. Square has made this statement.

Their plan for PvP is on the low down right now but it seems quite evident that they have seen how it has been implemented in other games and they dont want to do it the same way.

There will be no lvl 75 people camping outside Bastok killing everyone that leaves, you wont have to worry about running through PvP zones to get where you need to go, etc.

It will most likely be consentual and it prob wont be as much Player vs Player on individual basis but more like Realm vs Realm as in dark age of camelot.

Sub a class with stealth abilities...

NIN Tonko or WHM Invis

Might have to use sneak oils, since PCs should be able to hear your footstep clanks when u run near them.

If you read the latest announcement on PlayOnline.com, you'll see that they're going to be testing the PvP area in Tokyo soon to get player input:

A two-day player-oriented event has been scheduled in Tokyo, Japan to test the alternate reality before it is introduced into the game.
Prepare for a world that challenges the skills of high-level players--an unforgiving alternate reality! The final adjustments to this new realm will be made with the help of player input.

A new world awaits!

Personally, I would like to see more NvN (Nation vs. Nation.) Yeah, I know, there's the conquest system. But I think it would make things a lot more interesting if the whole system was way more competitive. For instance, have a penalty for grouping with other nations, or, have a bonus for having a full group all fighting for the same nation.

Erm...the alternate reality thing seems to me to be a new region, not PvP. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Thieves get this ability at level 45 (hide)

I imagine a battle between guilds would go down something like this:

  • Parties face off
  • Buffs are handed out on both sides
  • Mages and rangers cast their invis skill/spell (prevents auto targeting of them before battle begins)
  • Thieves ready SA/hides and positions himself behind the other group

  • Horn is sounded and the battle begins! Last group w/ any left standing wins. Sounds like fun to me :)

I just thought of something.. PvP would probably be the only place where Manual Dodge would work. You would want to constantly keep moving to throw off any THF trying to get behind you.

Everyone goes straight for mages and everyone will spin around to avoid the hiding thief :P

Well, they won't know where they are to start... they'll have to spend a bit of time targeting them. Most likely, the groups melee's will be hit with a sleepga/bind/gravity at first (the hiding/invis mages will be out of range) and the tanks will likely be the first to go. The mages will then probably be left nuking/silencing each other.

    [edit]

Just thought of something... this could actually be a place where RDM's chainspell 2HR is worth a damn. Chainspell would be fun here :)

to be honest i dont think provoke would be that difficult to implament.when you provoke the provokee can only target you and no one else for a short time. bit like bind really. wouldnt be too hard to implament and would stop people mindlessly slaughtering the mages before they get a chance to say 'cure II com......'

i think PvP will be fun. having inter-linkshell fights is going to be something quite special :)

"Big news included the addition of conquest-related player vs. player battles (not PK) and new limbo areas."

and the alternate realm will probably be the planned limbo areas since in the address about it has "limbo" in it...

    http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/limbo/01.html

all that probably in the next expansion.

Probably wouldn't ever happen. The WHM's would be the first to be provoked. Neither team would be healed and the tanks would be slaughtered first.

Simple solution: Provoke only applies to spells and abilities directed at enemies. Still able to use abilities to affect your own team. Doesn't seem too hard to implement.

Would be nice if provoke worked in PvP. As a DAoC veteran I can tell you that tanks were just about useless in PvP. After they were mezzed/rooted casters nuked eachother to death then finished off the useless piles stuck to the ground.

I played a WAR on Rallos and god did that suck. PvP was hella fun in UO though since I was a master archer. Ahh the good old anti-PKing days. I sure miss that.

Man pvp could be wack, no wonder it took so long. It has to be modified some how. The whole thing would be a race on sleepga. then the whm's would get murderd by a rdm using his 2 hour and convert ability to nuke it to death and blm using theirs for same. And I dont think everyone could just attack the whm right off the bat because that would leave your whm wide open. I cant wait to see how they implement it.
