#27 Jan 20 2004 at 12:19 PM Rating: Decent
I beleive that the day the Final Fantasy server's started to have issues is when the W32.Beagle.A@mm Virus when live to the internet world. This might be why they are doing the maintenance on their servers.

Since POL has a mailing System, it's possible that the Mass Emails from the virus bogged down their system.

Below is the information about the Virus.

W32.Beagle.A@mm is a mass-mailing worm that accesses remote Web sites and sends email to any addresses it finds. The email has the following characteristics:

Subject: Hi

The worm will only work until January 28th, 2004 (see note at step 1 below).

Some customers have reported that Trojan.Mitglieder.C has been discovered on computers infected with W32.Beagle.A@mm.

Symantec Security Response has developed a removal tool to clean the infections of W32.Beagle.A@mm.

Problem is, according to the Playonline website, all of the servers are up. Come on, Square-Enix. If they are up, let us in. Otherwise don't say they are up.

Just because the servers are up, doesn't mean they aren't still testing them. The page is generated dynamically and probably just indicates the results from SNMP probes to the servers. While technically they are up, they might not yet be available.

Well not to sound like a smart *** but gee, why not a maintanence status as well? Then when they start them up and are doing maintence then the buttons can say "Maintanence"

Yeah there was a problem yesterday. W Ron crashed while playing. Was down for about 10 mins. Now thats my server(Bahamut). Could it have been the only one? Maybe, but since that was the first time I've seen a whole section go down, I bet its not that good.

I think it's more of a technical issue. The page and server's SNMP traps could be re-programmed to give a "maintanence" status but I don't think they have much incentive to do it considering they are relying on everyone reading the news section of the site to determine when maintanence is over.
