Choosing a sj for RDM should really depend on each individual. an offensive minded RDM would get BLM or even a melee class, like WAR as sj(I know a LV6x RDM/WAR using Vorpal Blade!!). On the other hand, a healing minded RDM would get WHM or even SMN. Just remember that RDM is the most flexable job in FF XI.
IMO, before getting Refresh at LV41, a RDM acts as a healer more than nuker(RDMs can even replace WHM in some cases). After LV41, RDM starts focusing on refresh, dispel, enfeeblings, and even some nukings depend on the type of a mob(*1). After LV52(or whenever you start picking on robber crabs as your opponents), when mobs' defense and hp get incredibly high(Robber Crab LV60-68), a pt needs almost every possible offense it could get, and melee-minded RDMs can start their melee roles at this age and very little heals unless in critical conditions.
When I fight a robber crab, I start with Paralyze, Slow, Gravity, Rasp/Frost/Drown for mobs with high evasion, or Choke/Shock/Burn for mobs with high defense, then I melee with a proper En spell with Haste. During the battle, I have to watch four things: 1) party members' MP, this can be easily done if a proper refresh order is setup from the beginning of a fight or a pt. 2) dispel, use dispel when mobs buff themselves.
3) expired enfeebling spells. 4) Magic Burst if the sj is BLM.
In my pt, PLD and WHM are the healing roles, i'm just a mana pool with fighting and enfeebling abilities and I do heals whenever I need to or feel like to. I'm LV 56 now and with sword skill Spirits Within(175), I can deal 403 damage at 300% TP and full HP. Basically, number of exp chains depends mostly on the RDM's skill. The smarter a RDM is, the short the downtime after battles and more exp. How does 10k exp in 2 hours sound? :D
*1 usually in the situation when mobs don't have area-effected attacks
p.s. use Convert wisely
