I like your post, but the "hey, that's the way it is and if it's the way it is, obviously that's how it should be. Because if it wasn't, it wouldn't be," attitude is a little aggravating. Harassment is just annoying. People (I don't meant to sound sexist here, but apparently this pertains especially to guys) need to be taught the difference between cute/funny and disgusting/rude/annoying.

Well I'm female, I play a female Mithra at least in part because I thought she was cute. So if someone says something to me off hand, I don't care. Although that stalking story sounded pretty out of line, I'm glad they called the GM.

The only thing that has freaked me out is someone asked me if I needed money, then told me they'd give me 2,000 gil if I'd talk dirty to them. Okay, that is NOT why I play this game. I told them since my husband was reading this over my shoulder, it probably wouldn't go over too well. They laughed, and fortunatley went away, which was all I wanted. If they had kept bugging me then I would have called the GM.

That's the only bad experience I've had, although I've only been playing a week or so. So far this game seems to have relatively nice people on it.

I think the answer to what is ok/not ok is simple. Just like in the real world, there will be situations in which flirting is ok, and situations where it isn't appropriate or appreciated. If its something that would get you slapped in a bar, then chances are you shouldnt say it unless its someone who you KNOW gets your humor.

Example 1: a)random taru makes comment about being the right height - BAD
b)my friend the taru who knows me well says it - Funny as hell

Example 2: a) random person says "If you dont mind me saying so you look beautiful today." - Good!
b) random person says "Hi Elf girl, nice ***" - Bad! /slap!

True, this is just a game, but it has real people playing it, and in some cases these real people are 13/14 years old. Do you really want someone making those comments to your daughter/sister/cousin/child just because she happens to be a female playing a male dominated game?
#55 Jan 21 2004 at 4:10 AM Rating: Decent
theirs too much hate for 13/14 year olds in this post, im perfectly confident in my belief that most of those comments come from fully grown if not mature boys over the age of 18 :)

Yet another sad/no life space cadet post with space cadet replies.

Sexually harassed in a video game.....riiiiiiight. Get a life people.

Thankfully this entire thread was not moronic. Abyssus posted the most intelligent post in this entire thread but of course ignorant tard troll has to post some half witted low class reply to it.

Whmtaru : I was actually commenting about how many of these comments are made TO 13/14 year olds, not that young people are those that are making it. One particular girl who has left the game because of the nonstop following/comments was a 13 year old girl.

As for Ceclix, replying to you isnt worth my breath.
#58 Jan 21 2004 at 4:39 AM Rating: Default
Because you can't reply. Nothing intelligent anyway.

We call people who make these kinds of threads attention whores.

These people, in game, would rather page a GM then adding to their black list because they want the attention. Then they go posting these idiotic threads on these message boards because bothering a GM wasn't enough which in turn gets all the other trolls and losers excited and into the fold.

Stop the drama, get a life.

Yeah well that is wrong someone being sexually explicit to a child. Probably criminal too and better off just behaving, if not for good manners and upbringing but from prosecution.

I'd have to agree with Abyssus that the males in FFXI have a few too many feminine features.

Some men like to play female chars out of admiration of the female body.

Why do you think almost no females play Galkas, and even very few men play them? Mostly cause they're unattractive.

Simply put, we like things that we find attractive. While I have both male and female chars, I find that when playing my female char I'm less disgusted with the form and movement of my character. When I solo I often find myself moving the camera to have a better look at my female character.

Hume male is fine, but very ordinary looking. The Elf males have a very homosexual look to themselves and their movement definitely doesn't look heterosexual. I got nothing wrong with Tarus, they're a cute comic joke. Galkan's legs and head are way too small for the rest of their bodies, looks very odd.

Mithra look nice and Hume females look nice, but I'd have to score Elf Female the lowest of the females for lookin too much like Elf males.

Sure It's shallow to base people on looks, but that's how our society is. Why have an ugly person you like as your mate when you can have someone you find attractive AND like as your mate?

Love is based on attraction.

Just my 2 cents.

I find many of the attitudes on here very disappointing. Saying that is it just a game to a judge wont get you anywhere. Threaten to kill or rape someone in a game? Guess what? Just as illegal in real life as is sexual harassment. The teenage attitudes that are summed up nicely by Cecilxs blatently ignorant statements are a result of parents who say little Jimmy is a good boy cause he plays in his room all day on his PC and doesnt do bad things. The bad thing here is that parents arent taking little Jimmy out into the real world to teach them proper etiquet. Perhaps if people started calling the police when they were threatened or harassed they would start to get the message. In fact, until they are beat about the head with the legal bat they may not get the message.

"So I started playing around with action-emotes and am now possible to do a lap dance, and willing to do one for 10,000 gil. And a little bit of it IS roleplaying, I'm not very forward in real life with guys but in this game my character can be everything I'm not. To those other female players out there who might be outraged by my complete lack of female dignity or modesty or whatever you want to call it, I say it's just a game, and my character says hey a girl's gotta make a living."

Hey - if you can get 10,000 gil for a lap dance, maybe I can join in and we can get 25,000 gil to split between us?

Amen to that.

While I personaly would not request somthing like this (unless i knew the person) for the fear that it was a guy playing the character, and because i need a new set of armor in the next few levels. Its a great idea and would be very amusing to see.

Best wishes and good luck with your fund raising! =)

And to the guy who was having a go at my spelling. Im fully aware that my spelling is hopless, however my post was intended for a particular audience, and that particular audance realises that it is the meanings associated with the words that are important, not the words them selves. Its a matter of seeing the forest from the trees.

Oh my God people! Listen to yourselves! Getting upset over someone making a sexual inuendo joke in a computer game! Oh now you are scarred for life! Why does this bother you so much? Unless someone is literally stalking you all the time in the game, this is hardly deserving of attention. If u think someone is being rude then just block them.

Its all the same thing. I was making a point. And it does not surprise me at all that you completely miss the point.

and obviously you cannot understand that this IS just a game. no where in my posts did I say this was about real life. in fact that was my point, that his is NOT real life and just a game. yet you posted some nonsense about rape and killing people in real life.

you're a spinner dude.

Its about person to person interaction Captain. Even though it is a game mature people know what is acceptable, and the rules are the same everywhere. Alot of people complain about the maturity level in these games. And if anyone took a survey you would probably find its the number one reason alot of people choose not to play these games. Saying "its just a game" does not change the fact that you are interacting with real people and they do not like being treated in certain ways.

You tell me how talking to real people is not real life? Go on deluding yourself about how "its just a game so acting like a sexual predator is ok" and youll be in for a rude awakaning one of these days. And im not spinning anything nimrodx. Sexual crimes run the gambit of simple harassment to rape. People have been thretened with rape before in games like these and the person making the threats probably think along the same lines you do. The simple fact is this. One of these days someone is going to sue a company over these issues and win. Then all gaming companies will crack down hard on the "its just a game" idiots. If you cant understand how interacting with people no matter the medium is still governed by the same rules as everywhere else then you have serious issues.

Why are the female gamers and guys that play female characters complaining about harrassment. I am a guy and I play a male hume. I always have female characters asking to touch my rock hard body through my bone armor. Or female characters saying /em grabs zian's butt. So dont try to deny this. I know its true and soon my male characters across FFXI land will know too. I guess I am going to start reporting all those darn females grabbing my butt (even though I like it ^^) to prove that female characters are just as bad. SO ha on you.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I have to put something in here to lighten the mood. all I have to say is if guys like playing a female character then expect rude comments. It happens. GUys are pervs and we know it.

I get excited when I meet a female gamer because it adds diversity in the gaming world. So stop pushing them away guys, bring more in and keep them in.

acting like a sexual preditor?

dude with your extremist views are exactly what I am talking about. people like you are trouble makes plain and simple. if you take a joke in a video game and turn it into a lawsuit you need medication.

you are talking to real people in a fake world, making jokes about fake characters in a fake world does not make you a rapist you or killer and is not grounds for a lawsuit. we are not talking about the people playing these characters, we are not talking about death threats, we are takling about commenting on a computer characters clothing. if you are threatened or hurt by a comment on your computer characters clothing you need stop playing the game so much and go outside, and in your case seek professional help.

wisen up moron.

Your ignorance about law does not make you sound smart. And the issue is not being able to make comments at all. Its about knowing what is acceptable to say and knowing when your comments are not appreciated. You can keep trying to keep the focus on only part of the whole of my comments; it doesnt change the overall truth of my statements. Tell me, is talking on the phone not real life? Is calling somone several times to make inappropriate comments not real life?

Ok, before I begin I would like to point out that i in no manner shape or form advocate physical or verbal abuse in Real Life.

Quote:
Threaten to kill or rape someone in a game? Guess what? Just as illegal in real life as is sexual harassment.

I have threatened to kill many people in a game. Infact i have threatened to kill my father, a number of good friends and even people i do not know. This may sound outragious to you, but it is common place for majority of the gaming community. When you are playing games such as Quake, the goal of the game is to kill the opposing people as many times as you can.
Infact in FFXI we all discuss killing things for our own personal benifet openly. How can you say that threatening to kill somthing is ultimatly wrong, when you go around in game killing sproutlings and such?
Even more worrying is, what are you going to do when PvP is implimented? are you going to file a lawsuit against SquareE for facilitating mass murders?
My point is that it is the meaning behind the words in conjunction with the context they are used that determines how appropiate they are.
The argument here is that sexual inuendo within a online game enviorment is acceptiable because there is no chance of phyisicial violation. And with this I agree.
However i do not agree nor condone verbal abuse in online games because the associated impact is the same, where as with sexual inuendo, it is not. Needless to say the two are quite differant and should be treated as such.

Quote:

While i do not agree with the tone he has taken in his replies, he dose indirectly raise a good point. I do not feel it is good to attack him in the manner you have done in order to discredit his statments.
I assume his point is that you have gone off on a tangent and attempted to draw on topics unassociated and out of the context of what we are discussing. And with this I agree.

To conclude, you are drawing on situations outside the context of an online game causing your statments to have no direct relivance to this conversation.

If you wish to link your statments and put them within the context of that which we are speaking, that would be good.

Thanks.

Abyssus, telling someone that you are going to kill their toon in a PvP environment is one thing. Harassing or threataning someone directly is something else. Ill use little words now. Im not talking about the general fashion in which you interact with toons in game. Im talking about harassing people who dont want to hear it or making actual threats on their person. The attitude that its just a game blurs this for the unenlightened. If you want to tell somebody that they look hot in their new armor and they say leave me alone you leave them alone. Im not saying that that one comment should be seen as harassment. But it could possibly start you down the road in which you could be guilty of harassment. Continue to bother person when they said leave you alone? Think the GM will listen when you say Im just talking to their toon? Why is it so difficult to see the entireity of my comments? Harassment is harassment, period. I was illustrating the full range of possible harassment.

poor treatment is still poor treatment, whether it be over an electronic medium, or in person. there is no reason to treat someone badly, or in a manner that makes them uncomfortable. A person playing a game, or a person in any social group (IRL or online), should NOT have to shrug off or endure inappropriate comments/behaviour. "It's just a game" does not justify making a game less enjoyable for someone else, no more than "it was just a joke" does in any RL situation.
