OK, Ive tried using a regular PC USB analog gamepad. I forget what brand but it installed easily and my puter reccognized it np. FFXI recognized it also, but when I went to test the set up, nothing happened. Game doesnt accept commands from it. After much experimentation I gave up on it. I figure the game doesnt like that particular brand. Oh well, no biggie.

I read how others are using PS2 controllers and USB adapters, so I steal my sons adapter and controller and give it a shot. PC see's it, cool. I go to FFXI set up. I click the Gamepad button. It locks up, then fails to open. I try it again, but receive a window stating the program is already running. I ctr+alt+dlt and find said pgrm and turn it off and retry with same result. So I unplug controller from USB, open set up program, click gamepad button, get the set up screen open, replug pad in. SO far so good. But with sdame results as the previous pad. FFXI doesnt accept commands from it.

Any comments or advise is appreciated. I would like to know what Im doing wrong.

Did you go into FFXI config (where you can fix your graphics and such) and then click on Gamepads and set up your gamepad?
Try that if it doesnt work then Im not sure what your prob is. Only thing I can tell you is to stay away from logitech. And if your forced to have to buy a PC gamepad then buy a Saitek or a Thrustmaster from what I hear. I just use a PSX to USB game adapter from radio shack (10 dollars) it does say PSX but PS2 controllers also work with it. Good luck

Try Updating The Drivers Also And Set-up A Controller Profile

Im Using A "Saitek P2500 Rumble" and It Works Great.

Logitech's cheap gamepads are junk but their Wingman Rumblepad is the best controller I have ever used (I wish they made a PS2 version, I'd buy it) There is only one minor problem and that is that some games detect the slider as the vertical axis of the second stick. but this is easily fixed by either setting the slider to the dead spot and then configuring the game to detect the proper axis, or failing that just swapping them in the controller's setup panel)

Final Fantasy XI 12-14-11 Update wrote:
Adjust the resolution of menus.
The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

I thought of it first:
