I got a new vidcard to play this, and I figured I could play it with the details all turned up, but it turns out to be fairly choppy. I have:

Athlon XP 1600+
768mb PC2100 DDR
Geforce4 4600 8xAGP version

On the benchmark I get about 2900-Hi and 3400-Low.

Not bad scores right? I figure I should be able to play 1024x768 and 1024x1024 background textures fine. Nope. Turning off bump mapping and environmental effects didn't help much either. In my Display Properties thing I have AA/AF set to Application Controlled on the very left.

So I did the regedit thing and changed the background textures to 800x800. Now it's pretty smooth (still not silky smooth though). But 1024x1024 is noticeably nicer looking. :/

Is there anything I can do short of overclocking?

I'm doing research on this right now, and I'd say the biggest thing holding you back is your 1600 cpu, I've read elsewhere this is important for FFXI.

Right now i'm trying to figure out why my game lags at the AH, and crashes every 10 secs near certain ah's. I've a Gforce FX 5200 with a Athalon XP 2000

My XP 1600+ wasnt very choppy, using radeon 8500. My 3200+ is not even close to choppy. So yes, a processor would help.

I have the same problem, and I have a top-of-the-line system with a Radeon 9800 with 256MB on the card, and 1GB of Ram in the machine. The odd thing is it gets better whenever I reboot. The OS is WinXP.

I'm thinking it's either due to the fact that I installed direct X 9, or perhaps some problem with the video driver or ethernet driver, or some other background application that has a memory leak.

Although, one person did mention CPU speed, and that is the one thing I haven't maxed out on my machine...

At some point I'm going to submit it to PlayOnline to see if they can help, but since rebooting usually works, I'm in no hurry now.

Ya see 1600xp Is'nt enough. I have a Much faster CPU then you and not half as good a card. 2.6GHz P4 GeForce Ti 4200. Its not choppy with me at all and I have everything Maxed. Alot of people think this is a normal game like any FPS (Soldier of Fortune II) where it's all about your Graphics card and Internet connection. FFXI was made so that all transfers of data was minimal and the amount of data to be proccessed is double. This makes it possible to run on 56k with very very little or no lagg even in very busy AH's like Jeuno. Instead of your Internet sending all the info needed it just sends bits and your computer which then has to do all the work. Get a better proccesser and you wont have a prob.
