A day at the races! Chocobo Racing!Follow

#1 Jan 15 2004 at 3:09 AM Rating: Decent
Here is my big idea on Chocobo Racing being added to the game!

First, a Chocobo Raceway Park can be added to one city, more than likely Jeuno. After receiving your Chocobo Liscence a new Quest opens up that will allow you to earn a Racing Chocobo.

This Chocobo will only be used for racing, never for travel.

Once you have a fine Racing Bird of your own, you must go to the Racing Park to train your Choco. Everytime you go into the park you will go to your very own Chocobo Stall. This is akin to going to your Mog House in the Residential Area. Here you can feed your Choco different forms of Greens to raise its racing Stats (Speed, Stamina, Cornering, etc.) and also do little training Mini-Games to raise your birds stats.

Once you feel your Choco is up to the task of Racing, you can enter him into a race at the Chocobo Park against your fellow players. Entries will cost an amount of gil that will be in proportion to the amount of wins you have under your belt. The more Racing wins you have the more gil it costs to enter the race.

Racing your birds will be handled manually, with you on their backs. This will add a true competitive edge to the gameplay, and give it a classic racing game feel.

To the winner of each race, an amount of Chocobo Points is awarded to the winner. The more wins a player has, the more points are awarded. These points can then be used to purchase items and other fabulous prizes from the Chocobo Park!

Why Players would want Chocobo Racing.
Chocobo Racing would be a fun, competitive diversion from the games current XP/Farm to make gil to get better items to XP/Farm (with Quests in the middle). The Points earned will also allow players to purchase rare and powerful EX items.

Why Square-Enix would want Chocobo Racing.
Since the birds are Racing Only at the Park, it would not unbalance the current Travel Choco rental system. It would allow for non-level based gameplay, since a Choco's worth is only as good as the love of its master! It would offer a Money Sink in the economy, so that as players spend gil to raise their Chocos/race their chocos, they will do more tradeskilling to make more gil. It would also act as a wonderful Time Sink, allowing Square-Enix to keep more subscribers for longer.

If you like this idea, please feel free to submit it to Square-Enix.

To submit an idea open your Playonline Viewer. Then go to "Service and Support." Click on "Support," then "E-Mail Support." Then go to "Comments and Suggestions." Fill out a form, and when asked to write your idea down, just copy and paste the above post ^_^

You know, people have taken this idea into their own hands and implemented basic Chocobo Racing on a couple of servers. I know there is one pretty organized league in existence and another planned in Feb. I can't remember what server but I know there is a website detailing all the information. I'll look it up and post the info here.

I think it sounds pretty cool.

Don't forget about gambling too..

It still would be cool to raise your own personalized Choco... your Mog house would have a garage... hehe

maybe Battle Chocos.to... they could get decked out in different armor types... Didn't chocos fight in Tactics?

Then wehn PvP comes out.... hehe You'd have the Classic Atari JOUST!

Here is one, I know there is a larger league trying to span their league onto more servers in the future. Once I find that link I'll post that as well.

I definitely like the idea of raising your own Chocobo and think that would add a needed element to the game. This will hold some people over until SE implements an Official system (please SE implement this officially!!!).

Question

In regards to the people doing it now... How does this work? Are not all of the Chocobos the same at the moment? are there ways now to make them faster than another or is it just a matter of who's finger Doesn't slip off the button? And how do they judge who won? Is someone standing there taking a screenshot?

Ok that was Questions.. <^_^>

From what little I've read they have checkpoints setup throughout the area. I think the example I was given was a race that started In Jeuno that ended in Windhurst. There was multiple checkpoints setup that were comprised of other players that help organize the event. Its their job to make sure no one goes off course or uses speed hacks. The race proceeds through the series of checkpoints until they reach the Leviathan Gate at Windhurst where there will be more players watching to see who arrived first. If I find that other link it will explain all of this in better detail.

League Website

http://vcrl.onlineff.com/

Specifics

Some things may change, but Chocobos are eternal. Final Fantasy XI naturally includes the big yellow birds we've all grown to know and love. To get a Chocobo, you go by the Chocobo stable in town (which is marked by a little sign with a Chocobo on it), but first you need a Chocobo-raising license.

Once you have that license and a Chocobo, you can go out and run around. Chocobos also have the ability to dig in the earth for greens, which is useful in a couple of ways. For one, you need to feed your Chocobo to keep it happy and healthy. For another, they may dig up a hidden item when looking for food. When you're on soft turf or sand (they can't dig in hard earth), try and see what you can find.

Chocobo Stable Locations

Republic of Bastok
- Bastok Mines

Grand Duchy of Jeuno
- Lower Jeuno
- Port Jeuno
- Upper Jeuno

Kingdom of San d'oria
- Southern San d'Oria

Federation of Windurst
- Windurst Woods

Requirements to ride a Chocobo:

Must be Lv20 or above.
Must have 4 Grasses that are dropped by the Wadi Hare in Wadi.
Must go to the Chocobo Stable in Jeuno.
What to do:

In order to ride a Chocobo you must first obtain a license to ride one. You can obtain the license from the Chocobo stable in Jeuno.

You will need to get Grass from Wadi Hare located in Wadi. You will need 4 of these grasses.

You must now travel to Jeuno for the license. The only problem with that is getting there is the hardest part. Most likely you will be in the low level 20's, so chances of getting there by traveling yourself will be around 1%. To overcome this challenge you should make a party. In your party, it is a good precaution to have a high level character included.

After getting to Jeuno, look at the map and it'll be marked as “Chocobo Stable (It will be to your right, down the stairs). Now you must feed the Chocobo the 4 grass you got from Wadi hare. To start doing this, you must first talk to Brutus.

Brutus will ask you two questions, for the first question choose the first answer, and on the second question choose the second answer. Now talk to Osker, who is close by, and Osker will tell you to get the Grass. Since you already have the grass, go to the menu and choose “Tradefrom the menu and select the Chocobo that is right next to Osker. Now put just one of the grasses into the trade box and click the trade button. The Chocobo will make a squeal sound.

The first time, Chocobo will not eat the Grass. Now if you take a look at your bottom left it will tell you the Vana'diel time (Ex. 8:46), you must now wait until the next day. So wait until the time goes back to 0:00 (It does NOT have to be exactly 0:00. Any time the following day is okay).

The next day, try to trade the grass again. The second time it won't take it either. Now wait again until the following day. The Chocobo will start eating from the third day to sixth. So, the total of 4 Grasses will be used by the sixth day.

After feeding the last of the grass, you'll obtain your license!

Things you should know:

Chocobos are rented.
Chocobos get tired and when they do they will drop you off and leave.
They can only be ridden in field areas, not dungeon or town type.
Abilities, Items, nor Magic can be used while riding.
You cannot fight while riding. You can target monsters to track, however.
Healing actions, logging out, and temporarily going to the POL, and item trading are forbidden while on a Chocobo.
If your HP becomes 0 while riding, you are removed from the Chocobo. (Ex. Poison)
The area around you where you dig affects the possible items. (If you dig near water, you can get water-based items. Dig in a desert area, get earth based items, etc.)
One attempt to dig requires giving your Chocobo 1Gyashal Greens. DON'T WASTE THEM!

I think this would be a wonderful addition to the game. It would not only add elements with Chocobo Racing, but also with everything else that could be accomplished as well. This could bring a betting system into the game as you could bet on Chocobo races to earn Gil in the game. I only see this helping improve the economy which is always a great thing obviously. Also, raising your Chocobo for racing purposes would be another added component. There are many possibilties here. SE has a great chance to make a great game even better and I hope they do so.
#9 Jan 15 2004 at 1:17 PM Rating: Decent
I thought about adding gambling to the idea, but seeing as how it is designed to be a money sink (you'll notice I never mention people "earning" gil) I left it out. But say if a race consists of 8 racers, and one wins all of the others ante'd gil, then I guess there is still a Money Sink in the game, as well as a Gil earning opportunity to bring people into the game. The idea was to have a fun and addictive event that players would burn their gil on, with no chance of earning gil back from it, which would force players to go and earn some more gil, either by adventuring or tradeskilling. But if Squarenix implements it right, I could see it being done.

Thanx for the info on the League's Mr. Belvedere, I'll go check it out m(-.-)m

No problem, as you can see they are trying to bring the League to other servers as well. They even have screenshots up. I think if its implemented in the right way, they could really boost the economy without the end user sacrificing in any way.

And I'm Belvedere, not to be confused with the 80's butler Mr. Belvedere.

Wow

Very encouraging, and yet dissapointing.

Encouraging that there is an interest out there Smiley: yippee

Dissapointing that we werent the 1st Smiley: frown

Some of my linkshell mates, and I were talking about this, and have even been throwing a document back and forth outlining how we would run things.

We talked it over, and we're still going to try and do it on our own since it doesn't look like they have a presence on our server yet.

Anyway . . . I knew we couldn't have been the first.

I don't see why the entire Gold Saucer isn't added as a new zone. There should be something that would allow you to win items/equipment other than through conquest points. How cool would a battle arena with level caps be? Then we could see whose strategies for defeating enemies are the best. Crafting and questing are good diversions from leveling, but something more dynamic would also be nice.
#14 Jan 15 2004 at 5:09 PM Rating: Decent
Actually I hear there is a fighting area somewhere where you actually put those Beastmen Seals to use. The Gold Saucer idea would be fantastic but I think that environment doesn't really fit into FFXI's world. I'd love a centralized location where players from all over world could come visit for entertainment.

You know...the other day 2 people in my LS were trying to race chobi's. They kept saying crap like "I'll be in Jeuno before you". Another LS member stepped up and said "I'll bet you 5000g that I can be in Jeuno before you" (he was in Sandy at the time). Being big-headed one of the racers took the bet. Needless to say one quick Warp and he'd won the bet...

This sounds like a really neat idea.

To the poster who was posting the Chocobo Stable sites, I believe there is also a person you can rent chocobos from at each crag and in Rabao. I'm not sure about the Khazam area either, haven't bothered to go there yet.

I would like to see the races go down. Most of the past FF games after 7 had choco raceing in at least a small amount. also when pvp i like the idea of a battel Arean of some kind where player can go to fight just to see how is better.
