I just read this thread http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=1074022023757869608&num=39 about the ethics of "Farming" or "Herding" or whatever you want to call it. I just wanted to start another thread that forgoes the ethics debate and just shares tips about the best ways and places to farm.

Anyone from Kujata stop reading - I don't want my farming spots camped! lol

I'm 25whm/10thf when I farm. I go to the 2nd level of pal mines and blind 1 quad, and the rest just start following me when I walk by. A quick round of ga spells and and I'm rich! 20-30gil per quad and plenty of backplates to sell.

Here's why I like palbourough - I do get complaints from people when I farm, and it's easy to shut them up here. After a couple rounds of farming, I have a full set of fetich parts. I can only carry one of each - so I give tons of parts to noobs and they all love me!

I never get crystals from my farming trains, I think it's fixed that way if you are too high above the mobs you're fighting. I've also noticed that the closer you are to the mobs, the higher the droprate. Farming bees in lvl 1 areas gets me nothing. If I farm bees in harder areas I get way more. Anyway - share your secrets here - I want to use them.

Umm, crystals dont drop when you do not get XP.
A 25 WHM would not be getting any XP on level 2 of Pal. mines.

I farmed the top level of the hill in North Gust. yesterday and made off like a thief. Oh wait I was playing my lvl 16 thief. With minimal equipment so I could carry more drops, I got -

36 beehive chips
30 Flint Stone
7 pcs of Gob Armour
Various ore that I synthd into ingots
24 Honey
10 Wild Onions
18 Insert Wings
1 Silver Ore

+ more I can't remember. Did that in less than 3 hours.

Going back tonight, then I should be topped up for another few weeks. BTW, farming is less camped during the week I find. Weekend farming is very competative.

Ghelsba Fort, just run up the mountain with one mob provoked at the bottom, kill the group you got at the top.
Wait a while and run down the mountain, provoke one mob at the top and kill teh group at the bottom.

Works pretty neat.

I prefer to use my Thief/ranger combo when I am hunting specific mobs. With treasure hunter, and Wide scan teamed up it is a win/win situation.

As for general train butchering I agree with previous poster about Ghelsba Orc fest, and Giddeus also makes for a nice yagudo massacre. Not too mention mobs such as Gobs, Orcs, and yagudo have the benefit of dropping gil as well as items. With a thief job main or subbed above lvl 5 you also have Gil Finder benefiting you.

I always try to be curteous to the noobs that are lvling for xp though. Lord knows I have been there while a mage was training like 25 mobs, and then poof all dead. So if I have extra stuff that is not worth me selling, but would benefit their wallets I usually trade it to them.

IMHO

Windurst Farming in the Sarutabarutas

Mobs to Focus on:

Bees: beehive chips, honey, crystals
Crawlers: silk threads
Goblins: armor, helms, masks, crystals
Yaguto: necklaces, crystals

Yaguto necklaces can be synthesized with wind crystals into grass threads. Drops become less frequent after lvl 15.

Windurst Farming in Tahrongi

Mobs to Focus on:

Bees: beehive chips, honey
Crawlers: silk threads
Dhalmel: dhalmel hide, dhalmel meat, giant femur
