Okay, I already posted this thread on my own board, but I'm such a kind little SOB I'm reposting it here for a larger population.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, first off, here's a site with all the gorey details of getting your AF armors. After thoroughly studying everyones AF that are currently translated, here's a little synopsis of how they work.

AF1- Weapon AF Quest: The first AF quest is always the AF weapon, available to start at 40, though some are a bit too hard then, like BLM AF1. The person that starts your AF1 will also start AF2 and AF3 for you. (Unless one of the untranslated ones breaks this rules.)

AF2 and AF3: As stated before, these are started by the same person as you took AF1 from. They items aren't always the same per class this time, but generally are gonna be your headgear, leggings, or feet quests.

AF4- Your Armlets: This quest is a bit different, no matter what class it is started by Galsum in the Upper Jeuno armory shop. It always works the same though, you have to go find the Old Armlets in the coffer of your class, bring it to him and show him, then go to Port and check the ??? on the box outside the Duty Free Shop. This spawns a scene, then you are sent to Castle Vhazl Baileys to fight an NM Demon for the 'Flame of Darkness'. Bring it back to get your AF armlets.

Coffer AF equipment: Each class has an additional two AF pieces hiding in Treasure Coffers in the world. Find out where they are and work for the key, then go raid them for your goodies once you got the area's Coffer key.

Requirements for these quests: Okay, AF1 needs lvl 40 as stated, the rest need lvl 50 in said job or higher. For the Coffer AF's you need to at least of started AF4, which does not require completion of 2-3, only 1. You don't even need to have completed AF4, just started it (Galsum gives you info on the coffers) and you can go raid for the other coffers for the 2 easiest AF pieces generally. (Unless you're a thief, than AF1 is the easiest :P)

After looking at the stats on the AF armors I wonder why anyone even goes to the trouble, there is much more powerfull gear available at that level, to say nothing of the higher levels.

The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

The AF armors may not have the highest DEF stats, but take a look at the abilities that they add.

I'll use PLD and BLM for my example.

PLD AF armors have Emnity + attributes. Wearing these armors will improve your ability to hold aggro.

BLM AF armors have Emnity - attributes. Wearing these armors will allow you to cast more magic because you will draw less aggro from each spell.

While some of the other armors have some pretty nice DEF stats, they most likely do not carry these special attributes that are vital to your job.

The question is, why NOT go get your AF Armor? Save yourself the hundreds of thousands of gil and go quest for a powerful set of uniquie armor all to your own. AF gear wasn't meant to be the most powerful in the game, but it is worth the time spent on the quests.

Why? First of all, for questing purposes and they make the game interesting and enjoyable. Also, for the most part they aren't inferior, if they were why would people always wear them? Not until you reach 70+ now do many people stop wearing their AFs. And the AFs give you properties you could no other way achieve sometimes, like Regen on your wyvern for DRG AF armor.

There are some classes that don't care about a part of their AF set, a big one being thieves. The THF AF body isn't too great all around, and it nicely replaced by an Aketon, and then War Aketon. Other classes though will go all the way to 75 with their AFs being the best you can get, like PLDs and DRGs, many others as well. But if you want to shell out a few hundred grand for the 55+ armors, be my guest, you don't know what you're missing out on.

All of the THF AF armor has bonuses to steal, other than that there's nothing really special about it. The Marauder Knife for example is already surpassed by other lower level daggers even before you get it. I can think of only one use for it, and that is for loot jacking sessions against VT and IT beastmen (steal, then flee to zone and they can't catch you). Any other time I would use regular gear. (in addition, THF AF armor looks very stupid on a mithra and there's no way I would wear it except to steal)

So I can look exactly like other thieves?? No thanks. They should at least have a few different styles of pieces to mix and match so you can create your own unique look. But then, I think all armors should come in different styles and colors. Not too different of course, a mail shirt should look like a mail shirt but come in a few different styles. It would make dressing your character more interesting.

Yeah, well, look what Job you're talking about there. Like you said, the armor might serve a fairly limited purpose, but that limited purpose can be used to open up that many more opportunities. Stealing from the right mobs can net you many thousands of gil per hour, which in turn can fund more armor, crafting, etc etc. Plus, it is just one of those marks that lets you say you went out and did it. Might not mean much to you, but I play for a moment like finally getting that last piece of AF armor, instead of a moment like spending 300k at the AH, same show different number type of thing.

Thats weird... a thief player that doesn't like +thief... hmm

You're wrong if you think the THF AF's only add to steal. Boots add to Flee duration (+15 seconds), Legs (was it legs?) adds to Hide duration, and all the pieces give nice DEX and HP boosts. While I'm currently an ATK monkey, if you can break a few DEX barriers, you'll do better damage than people like me. (THF my level with Emp Hairpin, Leaping Boots, +2 Dex rings, +3 agi earring, Mithran and Marauder's does over 100 damage more on yokodama's.)

As for "wah wah, I don't wanna look like everyone else", what are you, high? Pay attention, a lot of times you won't see nearly as many AF wearers as you think. Especially with thieves, a lot of the richer ones use Aketon's and War Aketon's.
