Simple. As stated above n00b is derived from, and short hand for, newbie.

n00b looks cooler than n3\/\/b. It's also quicker to type. When bashing another player in a game it's important to do so as quickly as possible. Adding unnecessary keystrokes in a taunt is likely to waste your time and distract the taunter. This could lead to unfortunate and potentially embarrassing events. The last thing a taunter wants to do is leave themselves vulnerable to a riposte at perceived imperfections.

Noob was derived by an ignorant target of such a taunt who was most obviously not 1337 enough to realize those were zeros and not the letter “O”. Not an unexpected mistake from someone deserving of such a taunt in the first place.

There you are. The history of the term noob. If you believe that. OMG ROFLPMP U R A LLAMA.

That or it could have been a typo... >_<

Completely off topic, but then again, the whole topic seems to just be a bunch of ******** and clarifications on proper terminology and spelling.

So, in response to this off topic topic, I have no idea. I think once you activate a sub-job, you'll always have a sub-job on. Not positive, but thinking about it, aside from trying to make yourself look younger than you actually are, why would you NOT want a sub-job on? There aren't any circumstances where a sub-job is going to hurt your performance....unless I'm missing something...maybe I'm a "n00b" (or is it "newb"?) too.

You cannot unequip a subjob. Once you have activated a subjob of any kind, you cannot go back to no sub job. the 47 monk without a subjob was undoubtably a noob

That's not necesarily true... (As it happened to me in the Beta-PS2 play). Spend weeks trying to find objects and not getting them drop. I'd spent two and a half weeks in the beta-version trying to get a skull for the subjob quest, because I'd been in parties where the people would get their equipment, maybe help one or two other people get them, then they'd break off to get their subjob.

I'd get in parties after parties where this would happen, until my level went up to 30 or so in the Dunes, and I couldn't find anyone who'd play tag along for ghouls/skulls with a guy who was 7 to 8 levels above the general groups in the area.

So I'd have to try to jump over to Palborough for a greater variety of (hopefully) skull-dropping creatures, but again, I'd been hosed by my higher level of my monk (who was up to about 32) by this point. There was nobody around (again, on the PS2 beta) who was friendly enough to help out someone at a higher level, so I was forced to solo ghoul after ghoul.. with no luck in that drop until I had gotten to 33 or so. (somewhere around 200 ghouls killed, yes, 200(!), before I was fortunate enough to have that one final drop.)

So far, fortunately, it seems that the larger crowd of the "retail" version seems to make what happened to me then appear to be a lot less likely; from everything I've read, people are more likely to help out, but then again, they were those kind of claims on the beta... but I never ran into those 'helpful souls'.

So I was one of those players who had to deal with the "why don't you have a subjob, ya noob?" over and over over for weeks on end... it wasn't by choice, just by per chance.

I may use the term n00b to describe myself (and really, even then, I only mean I am a total novice or that I am having trouble figuring out something - at any level, but most usually at low levels) .. but I would not ever use it to describe others. I say that only in jest - and when applied to myself I don't see it as derogatory. However, I do somehow see it as derogatory if one is using it to describe someone else, probably because it is (in my mind) 'l33t' language - which I really don't speak.

I have, on occasion, described someone who is totally new to a game as a 'newbie' as it is a common term for same in EQ. I have also used the term 'lowbie' which is the common description for someone not new to the game, but, whose current character is of low level.

I've applied new definitions onto the termonology "newb" and "n00b".

I use the term "newb" to refer to a new player who is still trying hard to learn the ropes and get to know the game. At one point or another everyone is a newb. Infact i often use the term in an affectionate context because newbs are often very cute in the way they go about things (trying to talk to NPCs is if they are people, spend hours trying to kill mobs with there bear hands because they dont know how to equip a weapon, etc etc)

I use the term "n00b" to refer to someone who never seems to learn regardless of how much they play/do. Often i apply this term to 14-18yro players (punks) who are so completly sure they are right in every field of exepertiese all the evidence and proof in the world (ie: entire group gets killed) is not going to change there misinformed opinions.

Anyway, thats just how i use the two terms. Feel free to adopt this termonology for your self.

To add to my above post. I also use the term "n00b" in a jesting context in much the same way as calling someone an idiot in a jesting context.

Regarding language and communication across the net. Ive found it a growing trend to focus on the recipients interpertation of the information rather than the recipient attempting to interperate what the person is saying within the context of that inderviduals demeanor in order to TRY and interperate what they are trying to convay, as opposted to how the recipient wants to interperate the words. ... anyway thats getting a bit OT and is probbaly too serious/deep, just somthing ive noticed and is having a negative impact on remote relationships (and real ones too, but it is less likly to occure due to additional information from body language etc)

where is this term comes from?

For the one thing.... i love it how these l33t G33ks userp the term and try to make it seem that it's for video games only. MMORPGs have only been around for a little while. This term I have been using for years while playing regular RPGs (dice and books) such as I.C.E.s Middle Earth.. w00t! But if I

But if you really wanna get technical it's been being used for WAY longer than even that, originating from British public-school and a military slang variant of `new boy'. I mean all it is is some twisted phon'ics.

As far as using n00b or Newb.... Well Newb just sucks..it looks bad in my taste and don't care waht personal intonations you get form it... I personally recognize No difference in basic meaning.... It seems when some thing is typed in the style of somone who trys to come off as Holier than Thou El33t.... a person who isn't "in"to it is going to get more upset than someone just saying Newbie, or Newby, or Newbee.. or Who Cares..... I think n00b looks better.. so nYah!

I mean does Dude and d00d mean somthing different too? really,, I've seen people talking h31@trash to easch other using Newb with the same meaning you express that n00b holds....

As Calling someone who Screws up a n00b? Its the school of Hard Knocks.... If it takes pissing someone off, or putting someone n there place to Teach Them to Learn how to play the game.. than I'm going to call them a n00b no matter waht lvl they are on. I'm not going to sugar coat stuff.... BTW I only use the term Jokingly In-game anyway.. "Pull a Lizard, those Bats are n00b", "Why are you using that n00b weapon?", et cetera....

Semantics...beh.. maybe i could soften the blow by using 'n00bish' <^_^>

I thought noob & newbie has different meaning??

Newbie - u are new to a game, asking a lot of people, learning a little by a little?

Noob - u think u know a lot of this game, but the way u are acting is totally opposite and a lot of theory are wrong... The most important thing is u don't listen to other ppl's opinion..

I see a lot of newbies recently, and I see them learning by asking other players.

I also see a lot of jerks asking for crystals, asking for gils, asking for items, asking for free stuff when they should fight some mobs and get the stuff that way.

Then I see people who are messing around pretending they know stuff. fighting ghoul in their lvl 18 with party of 4 or 5 is just sound too risky to me. (all lv 18, without sub)

New players aren't always = NOOB, but people who thought they know stuff but it was actually wrong and won't listen to others are NOOB to me, even though they have lvl 75 char. I've seen lot of players using those important jobs in the game like whm or blm and leech exp off others.. it might be slow, but it seems they lvl faster then others. Do they know anyting... probably not, do they get pt members killed... probalby 90%... a LS member went with a pt for 2 hours @ lvl 9 and still lvl 9.. heard the whm just let them die and does know how to be a good whm while I think the whm ran first and survie :(

I think the word were all looking for is not 'NOOB' but 'BOOB'.

'NOOB' is just a non-sexual way of calling someone a 'BOOB', which is someone who is basically making day 1 mistakes at day 101.

That's why we yell and scream at them, because they fail to learn from their mistakes. It's okay to make a mistake. "Sorry, I aggroed that bat while we were chaining Maze makers." But it's another thing to go around "Attack bat, attack crawler, attack my left toe...HEAL ME HEAL ME...I NEED A RAISE AT J-8"

So yeah, what were really saying when we calling someone a 'NOOB' is that were really calling them a 'BOOB'.

But..this is a pg-13 rated game...so you can't say 'BOOB'. :)

You have to say 'NOOB'
