#1 Jan 13 2004 at 3:23 PM Rating: Decent
Ive tried lots of characters from elvaan warrior to mithra thief too tarutaru whm who i curently am still using, and seem to be getting annoyed with my whm i just cant seem to have fun any more its not the xp or the race just the job which is always annoying me, i cant seem to find a fun way to play final fantasy anymore i havent even finished my first free 30 days and im having seconds thoughts, the only other character i would think of is a Galka Monk who looks pretty good, but the chances are pretty slim i started characters out differently the mithra thief was pretty fun but there was something about it i didnt like i kept thinking warrior would be funner because i didnt really care about the extra abillities than went to elvaan War it was pretty fun till i started getting confused with all the weapons i waisted to much gil on weapons and didnt seem to have any more fun with it eatheir not only the weapons but i didnt want to be a puller who i realised would be the main "Job" for a high level war, than i thought to go to white mage i knew i was going to heal the party all the time but even than whats the fun of that heal heal heal heal heal heal heal its like having fun when ur young and than when your higher age or level your just healing people and they will be having more fun! sorry to mention this to all you people about how im not having fun and this isnt ur fault or anything just im looking for some good recommendation ! thank you
sorry for my lack of writing i had to write this extremely fast ! (120 wpm :D) words per minute

I find it amazing you wrote that much without using a period. At least I don't see any.

Anyways. You're approaching this game wrong. You realize there are more things to do then kill monsters, don't you? Here are some things you can try.

1) Fishing - If you have no clue what you're doing, go to Forums--->All FFXI Forums----> Tradeskill
There will be some threads there. If you want an "easy start" grab a rod (any low-level one, preferably the cheap ones), some little worms and head out to windurst woods or anywhere but the docks in windurst. You will catch Moat Carp and Crayfish, make some money, break some rods, lose a LOT of fish and level up your skill. In the end your Moat carp stacks will be profitable over your rods breaking (yes, even at skill level 0)

2) Tradeskills (Crafting) - Pick one, make stuff. Again some guides in tradeskills forum.

3) Questing. If you want some extra stuff to do, browse the quest area of this site. For example, make it a goal to finish one area's quest within a certain time-span.

All of these can be packaged in with regular levelling. As you can see from my sig- I do a lot of everything.

nice display of stream of consciousness lol

Well the most fun for me comes from partying, knowing people (NA and Japanese), having a LS... these kind of things.

Leveling and crafting and fishing is nice, but
w/o the aboves playing this game wouldn't be fun at all
(that's IMO). After all, it is a mmorpg...

It looks like whm is not your vocation, and warrior neither.
I got a little headache reding your 20 line non stop sentence
(hehe sorry I dont mean to be nasty)
so I dont remember if you tried other jobs... did you?

good luck!

Ps: I do fishing and evreything i just have a very hard way on deciding on a character its like it has to be perfect from the begining and since theres no stat rolling i really dont have a choice, dont know why i do that but i just do, anyway im going to try some charcters thanks alot.

I did try alot of characters but theres some i havent like i havent used the full potential of a blm and a mnk.

The question is why type of play style do you find the most fun? Do you like being the guy with the big sword chopping monsters in half? Or do you want to be the wizard that blows things up? How about the tank that takes all the punishment from the monster? Or a healer who is keeping everyone alive? Perhaps you want to be the debuffer who makes the enemy a shadow of his former self. What role do you want to play in a complex skillchain/magic bust?

Sorry if this isn't what you were aiming at, but I found that a little difficult to read... ^^;;

I get the impression that you're bored. When you set your sights on just gaining exp, apathy can set in quickly. Don't worry about picking the most perfect character right at the start. You can change your job at any time. I know players who have stopped with a job at level 70 and then gone all the way back to one they've never tried at level 1. Like Lutha said, what do you really see yourself as in the party?

Once you have your subjobs you can mix it up a bit. There are numerous paths to follow in this game and you definately haven't tried them all. Don't give up yet! ^_~

Even though you said a redmage was not for you,
I would suggest raising one anyways up until
level 15 or so; shouldnt take too long.
You might find you like it, as you can fight,
nuke, enfeeble, heal; it's never a boring job.
And if you find yourself nuking more or meleeing
more than you can just switch to a blackmage
and otherwise.

Play any race you want. It'll make little difference
in the end game, with some few exceptions.
Since your're not really sure what you want to do,
I suggest Hume.

Like someone else suggested, I recommend doing
quests as well.

If you're still bored, then this game is just not
for you.

Once again im sorry for my terrible writing ^-^

I've thought of that and I think its great but i am still stuck.

My character is still the whm and im still really not having much fun, im thinking of making a galka monk but it would have to start in windurst because for some reason i love it! Its my favorite place for a begining, anyway thats why i think a galka wouldnt turn out to great.

Id like to make my tarutaru into another job but what other job besides whm, blm and mabey thief are good for tarutaru.

ps: sorry nightspirit this post wasnt aimed to ur post

As Nightspirit said, race makes little difference. It'll give you a slight edge in the higher levels. Taru are worst with HP but best with MP. Galkas are exact opposite. To me, those are the most important (HP,MP).

Everyone of the other stats aren't as important. 2 STR = 1 ATT. Even at lower levels you can buy +Att equipment to make up for the less strength. That kind of different isn't noticable until the higher levels. 2 Dex = 1 Accuracy...etc.

Don't get caught up with the race. I've partied with a couple of DRK tarus and they definitely hold their own. If you want fun, try a BLM. I know a BLM is definitely always needed and wanted in my party. As long as you have someone who knows how to hold aggro, you'll be fine. Oh...and I would suggest that you shouldn't nuke repeatedly. :)

A tarutaru would make an excellent redmage,
whm, blm, and when you get an advance job:
ranger, summoner, ninja.
You can do almost anything with any race.

The only thing I wouldn't recommend for
a taru would be to tank, ie, warrior.

Now, there are a lot of sucessful taru
warriors, and that just proves you can do
what you want with nearly any race, with
some adjustment to difficulty.

Thing that's gives me the most joy of the game (MMORPG'S) Is't the fact of just leveling your character. It's more about making friends... go out together and stuff. I mean if you want to go jus for job and EXP.. Why not get an offline game?

I agree with Kid. The fun is in playing/chatting/running/die/trash talking other players in your party/linkshells/in shouting range.....:)

As for jobs, I am just sticking with melee for now but I chose Hume for a race to make the transition from jobs a bit easier ("WHAT?! 4 MP for 15th GALKA BLM?!").....;)

Along with whm, I'd highly suggest trying a different job as well. One problem I have with whm is it's not very fun to play (IMO 17whm). I think maybe after you get to a higher level that will change (regen & more experienced players), but my 1-17 levels of experience have been mostly watching the HP bars in the bottom right hand corner of the screen for most of the battle, then using the downtime to re-adjust my eyes O_o lol It can be nerve racking :P Just my opinion on whm...

Maybe try a damage dealer (blm or mnk) and see how the offensive side of partying is. It's a much different style of play that you should definitely experience.

-Souzo (Bismarck) 39blm/17whm/15thf etc...

As for jobs - You can switch your job class at your Mog House without changing your race/character. So my first suggestion is to figure out what race you want to be. Race will have an effect on your characters effectiveness, so keep that in mind if you end up liking a difficult race/class combo.

After you have chosen your race and name and all that, choose your starting class as a Red Mage. In the first 10 levels of the Game, Red Mages are fairly on par with Warriors, White Mages, and Black Mages, so you get to taste a bit of everything. Get your RDM to level 10 to get a real feel of the game. Also, go at a slower pace and take in the sights, as it were. By the time you reach level 10, think back about your play style and what you have had the most fun doing. If you nuke alot, then maybe BLM is the way for you. If you heal alot, maybe WHM is the way for you, if you melee alot, maybe Warrior is the way for you to go. Or maybe you'll just end up liking the RDM and stick with that.

If you like melee, you have many options, while Magic Users are limited (though no less powerful). If you go melee you can choose the Defensive Paladin, the Offensive Dark Knight, the Weapons Skill Specialist Samurai, or the Jumping-Dragon toting Dragoon.

As for how to have fun - As stated above, go at a slower pace. There is no rush or race to level in this game as there has been in previous games. Combat isn't boring or tedious, least ways not for me, and the weapon skills help add some fun.

You can try your hand at Tradeskills or Fishing. You can do a ton of Quests, or work on Missions for your nation. You can harvest your own materials from Logging, or Mining, or Harvesting. Once you have your Chocobo liscence, you can go Chocobo Digging.

The above has worked for me, especially the slower pace (can't emphasize that enough ^_^). Hopefully it will help you out =)

Edit: Also, with the confusion over all the weapons - decide what Advanced class you want to become with your Warrior, and invest only in those weapons. I eventually plan on being a Dragoon/Samurai, so I have invested only in +1 Crafted Spears each time, so I will get to use them again when I level my Samurai, and finally my Dragoon.

I'd have to say the most fun I have in-game is with my linkshell buds and a few friends I've made through other means.
FFXI is a social experience above and beyond anything else in the game. Linkshells, partying, the AH, bazaars - they're all designed to make you interact with other players.
The first LS I was on was alright, but I didn't have as much fun on it; I have a blast with the one I've got now. They're obnoxious, sarcastic, rude, and the best group of people I could hope to meet Smiley: smile Seriously, though, we can always rely on each other for information, support, and (usually) a helping hand (or spell).
When I get into pick-up parties or with people I've never met, I try to strike up conversations, get some kind of comraderie going. A few people who respond well get asked if I can add them to my friends list, and those people I keep track of as the game progresses.
If you find you aren't enjoying the game, try cultivating a better community group, whether it be LS shopping or what. It can make a big difference in the fun of the game.

at least you registered on here...

well .... i think you dont know what you want to do, which is a good thing, so dont beat yourself up about it and just stop the game after 30 days. save you the heartache of complaining at lvl 20 or lvl 30 when you knew the job you have is exactlyy the thing you didnt want to be doing.

I have some friendly advice :) Try a red Mage... They do a little bit of everything. So perhaps you could find what you really like to do and create a character that centers on that. Or maybe you're like me and you like to do everything so you could just stick with the character and do everything. Yeah you wont be uber this that or the other.... But at least you'll see what the game has to offer. just my two gil worth
