Common, Uncommon, RareFollow

What do you all think constitutes the drop rarity on items? I'd like to come up with something official to set to the items.

1 - 10 kills = Common?
10 to 50 kills = Uncommon?
50 to 100 = Rare?

Here are the rarity levels we have in our database.

Junk
Common
Uncommon
Rare
Very Rare
Ultra Rare

51+ kills = rare?

There's the odd thing where people show kill logs of 300 ph and 17 named to get the one drop. So uncommon from the named, but certainly rare from the placeholder...

I wonder if the "rarity" field has always been a bit of an illusion. Maybe a more accurate flag would be "always drops" vs. "chance to drop" and leave it at that --as that is not subjective to variations in reporting. Besides, we tend to only get somewhat accurate reporting on the really annoying drops and there is usually multiple posts saying that.

A different example: the pricing of items that users can put in. It is kind of a faulty system because almost no one does it anymore, and people tried to manipulate it back in the day. But... if a logged in user could report once per item how hard they thought it was to get: (could even be common, uncommon, rare using Gidono's proposed scale) then you would see over time that a particular drop was rated "rare" 77% of the time despite 4/5 posts in the thread saying "I must of been lucky got it on the first drop".

Anyway, some thoughts.

EQ Rarity is set at the Item level far as I know and each mob/zone is different for the same item

like gems
early expansions
some gems were very rare
later expansions
made the same gems less rare

Magelo provides very useful info in this regard, with exact frequency of drops experienced by type of mob. Of course, it can only access data from players who are willing to contribute but it's useful samples. I used it often when chasing collectibles that drop from mobs and I found it usually on the mark.

Adjectives based on anecdotal evidence can always be misleading. We've all been there pharming a drop and thinking it's been 100 kills without seeing it and when we check our logs it was more like 19. Estimated actual drop experience might be more useful than descriptive terms, so say maybe "Drop rate ~1/100" rather than "Rare" since "Rare" can ,mean different things to different players. Just a suggestion...

There are two things to consider when one hopes to loot something.
One: How frequently "a certain mob" drops the item. Is it always or is it one in 20 for example.
Two: How many of "a certain mob" are there and how often do they respawn.

As far as getting an accurate drop rate with percentages like magelo, that would be nice. I believe magelo gets their drops from their magelo tool which reads the drop and inputs it into the site and then a script on the item page does the math. I would love to add that information at some point and is on my TODO list of new features for the site. That would require the item collector to collect that info and then a site side script reading the information for the drops. This is something rswiders (our item collector dev) would have to work on and then have one of our ZAM developers make the site side script. At this time our ZAM developer is busy working on fixing bugs for us, particularly he is working on the issue with the site being unresponsive.

Back to the drop rarity, it's very rare that we get someone who provides logs of their kills for a particular drop. So all we have to go by is their word that it took X amount of kills to get their drop. So for now I just want a range of numbers for each rarity field.

I also like to know if the mob equips the item, if he's got it on him. It's always a blast to know in advance that a mob has that rare piece of loot you're going after!
