Are the special mercs you can get any better than say J1? Do they work the same? Can you hire different ranks of the special mercs?
Can't be sure if this applies to all special mercenary NPC's, but the special mercenaries from the claims window ie Wailing Contract/Hadya Ware in POK has: Apprentice ranks 1-5 and Journeyman tiers available.
But they are no better or worse than other races mercenary npc's in POK. You see only the journeyman tiers that the character is flagged for (via SOD progression themes) otherwise the default for journeyman mercs is tier 1.

If you have more than one merc slot yes, you may have more than one type/level. All mercs act the same, they just have different looks. Though on group member did say it looked like the skeleton caster merc was going FD when it got aggro.
I recall the bloodbone mercs being slightly messed up for a very short time after their introduction. They were very popular due to this. Since that patch, my info is that merc = merc = merc.

My understanding is that the differences between different types of mercs are purely cosmetic. The only thing that matters is apprentice/journeyman and the rank number. I suppose when the next expansion goes live and we can look at merc stats, we'll be able to confirm this.
