A few beastlord questions.Follow

#1 Sep 08 2013 at 10:03 AM Rating: Decent
Hello all, I hope it's ok to ask these questions here, if it's not, I am sorry I couldn't find a class specific area. I'm thinking about making a beastlord, as I have never played one and I am leaning heavily towards making it a Troll, but I have a few questions. I can't seem to find any up to date information anywhere online, everything I find are discussions from 2006 and earlier. At one time Troll warders were alligators, but then they were changed, but it was stated or rumored or whatever that the change was temporary, was it ever changed back to alligators? And secondly I also was reading (again out dated information) that Troll warder's just don't grow all that much and they stay pretty small as you level. Is that true? I mean I don't NEED for my warder to get huge and bigger then me, but it would be nice if it got pretty big like other races warders.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the help, and if there is any place that there is up to date information around that I just missed feel free just to point me there as well. Oh, and if you know of any place that has screen shots of full sized Troll warders as well, that would be cool, since google didn't really seem to have any. Thanks again!

Oh, just one more question. I know that Beastlords generally use hand to hand (or at least again that is what I have read) but do they get a damage bonus for fighting unarmed? Like do I go to a certain level without a weapon like I have heard that monks do? Or should I invest in a weapon or two (dual wield at 17 yes?)? I'm not looking to twink him out or anything, but I do like to have an ok weapon for melee to start with unless it is unnecessary. Thanks again!

I don't remember troll warders ever being changed from gators but I have some holes in my EQ resumé so I suppose it's possible.

All the warders were reduced in size from when the class was launched. To be fair, the mature warders were pretty obnoxious; troll warders were about Lockjaw sized, VS warders were smaller than the Stonebrunt tiger titan but not by much. What do you do with a giant pet? Well, if you're like too many people, you park it on top of the banker to make him impossible to click or some other annoying mischief. But when the nerf hit, troll warders were made tiny and I think a mature troll warder is about normal croc size now but it's been forever since I've seen one. I suspect the devs just used a generic formula to shrink the warders and gator pets were hit disproportionately because their dimensions are almost all length x width as opposed to the length x width x height of the tigers, bears & scaled wolves. In other words, if they said to reduce height by 50% and make the rest proportionate, then gators who were already low to the ground would become very low and the rest of the dimensions severely contracted as a result. That's just a guess on my part.

Fun history fact: When Luclin launched, you summoned a 'permanent' pet via a special BST ability and then the Spirit of [...] spells would just buff the pet, cause it to grow larger and give it its special proc attacks. You had to resummon it if it died or you camped but it was otherwise persistent. Since the pet still counted as a spell in terms of coding, this caused various issues when you had a spell with a 12+ hour duration and they had to patch and make the pets work as they do today. Years later now they seem to have fixed the problems with persistent pets (thankfully) but I guess there's no benefit to changing BST warders back.

LOL, Sometime back in 2005 or 2006 there was a bug after a patch and warders were HUGE! The cat one was almost the height of the large bank in PoK. Boy was that fixed quickly.

EDIT: I think Troll pets are now basilisks or at least they look that way.

Thanks for the answers, I appreciate it a lot. I'm thinking that I'll be checking out the Troll BST then, even if I don't get a huge pet :) Thanks again!

Last time I logged my troll beast in she had a basilisk pet. If a person wanted to really dig on the official boards I am pretty sure a SoE person has gone on the record saying the croc pet is not coming back.

The Forum Info & Useful thread here suggests going to The Beastlords' Den for info.

Shows how many troll beastlords I've seen lately. Had no idea about the pet change. Basilisks make zero sense for a troll warder but, hey, whatever.

Agreed, Trolls live under bridges or in caves,a spider would be more appropriate.

You'll probably have to dig into some bst specific forum to find out about the base h2h damage / delay ratios for unarmed Bst. I doubt it's the same as Monk, but maybe close. The thread at https://forums.station.sony.com/eq/index.php?threads/monk-weapons.201042/ lists / links both the new and old ratios for Monks, which is significant, but at lower levels / skills, twink weapons will still be better.

Personally, I don't ever see Bst going bare fisted, but you rarely see Monks doing that either, and they have a good ratio.

Yes, Troll's used to be Alligators, but at some point (probably with the huge pet bug), they were changed to basilisks. Lore-wise it bites, but personally I like the slightly smaller pet. Generally no need to shrink, unless you like really tiny pets (almost invisible) as they stay out of the way pretty unlike, Grown Vah Shir Tigers that hog the entire old Gild Hall pool, and make visibility on raid nearly impossible.

Not to redirect from the kids at Alla, but Beastlords.org was my friend back in the day when I was more active with my BL. If memory serves, there's a h2h chart, and, if it's feeling dated, a new post asking if there's updated parses will likely get you a better answer.

I'm fairly certain there's a Troll BL or two on beastlords.org who'd be glad to post some images. :-D
