My understanding from reading around was that all the Apprentice mercs were essentially the same (Tier 1, 2, 3, etc) aside from their "morale". But a Tier 1 wizard merc cast the same spells as a Tier 5 and a Tier 5 tank had the same hp/AC as a Tier 1. Is this correct?
I read elsewhere someone recommending having "at least a Tier 5 Apprentice" if the other person didn't have a gold account. I have a T3 Apprentice from back when that was the highest non-unlocked level and never had trouble with her running off in combat. Is there any real benefit to upgrading her to T5?

Agree with all of Yther said including the jump to J5 from J1 cleric Mercs being quite a power increase.
Because when I compare my J5 cleric mercs to my J1 mercs against similar mobs with the same tank, I see that the bonus to their direct heals are up to maybe 75% (in my rough estimate) bigger than the J1 direct heals. While the J5 definitely has a considerably larger mana and HP pool. I notice this mainly because the J5 hardly runs out of mana where the J1 would be low on mana in a similar circumstance with a similar AI setting. It also seems to take a hit better but I'm not certain if the HP increase (or AC if applicable) is as good as the Mana pool increase between the Journeyman 1 and 5 cleric mercs.
I'm not sure if there is a stat difference between the ranks of Apprentice Mercs , but by lvl 85 content or even earlier, an A5 becomes underpowered from what I've heard and read.
