Shooting themselves in the foot?Follow

Sorry for resurrecting a dead thread, but I thought I'd add my 2 cents.

I've recently started using 3 silver accounts from old paid accounts from over five years ago. The reason I stopped playing was my wife and I started a family and there was no room in my life for EQ. I recently heard about the F2P and thought I'd give it a shot. This is a perfect concept for me:

1) I can't afford to subscribe to 3 accounts and play once or twice a week for a few hours
2) If priced right, I can purchase unlocks/services to throttle my use under F2P

If I'm paying $2.50 to unlock 100 AAs and it takes me 1-2 months to earn those 100 AAs, I rather do that than pay the subscription. In the end SoE is getting their money, but it better matches my use. Things like mercenaries if priced appropriately would fall under this model as well. Those that are playing an amount which is on par with a subscription will likely far exceed the cost of a subscription if they attempt to do so with unlocking and services. It all works out in the end.

Mizoto, I"d suggest activating one account. That would allow a good merc, along with other benefits.

Not trying to sound elitist, but $15 a month, or less for longer terms, isn't that much.

Seriously, it burns those of us who pay, to see those who refuse to pay get the same that we do. Not trying to be rude, rather I'm being honest.

I can see where you are coming from, but would your opinion change if they charged $50/toon to unlock this ability and still require the progression tasks? Where is the price break that makes everyone happy?

In my mind, it's about everyone paying to match their use. If I am only able to play a few hours a week, why should I pay at the same rate who is playing that much daily? The daily player should get a huge discount for his frequent play (gold membership), while the F2P player would pay much more but spread out over time to get the same benefits. A raider would never fit this model.

The alternative is for me not to play at all. I think it benefits the community to allow both types of players.

If people would step back and look at a bigger picture they might see things a bit different.

At one time we had to create an item by placing each single item in the forge/kiln/ect unstacked and then hit combine for every single time we want to create something (made making Misty Thicket Picnics a HUGE pain). At that time the Devs said that the game engine could not support another way. Because crafting was hugely liked they spent development time to find a way to create a new and better way, thus we have a better crafting system. This I think (slept once or twice since then) came with a new expansion. They had to change the whole system to do it, but those changes was made to keep their loyalty base.

I quit playing EQ1 and went to WoW sometime after Omens and played sketchy after and about 6 months ago I came back to play and before we was told we could never have bags larger than 10 slots, the system could not handle more. Now we have HUGE bags and can put an empty bag into another without having to make it into a token to save storage spots. This was a result of changing the system in order to accomidate (sue me I cant spell) the demand, again to keep the loyalty.

Lets face it, EQ1 has not been high on SOE's priority list for a long time, it does have a loyal enough following to warrent development time else EQ1 would have hit the trash can along time ago. But changes come really slow. FTP is a new toy they are playing with and before they drop alot of Dev time into it they are going to think long and hard before they invest alot of time/money if it done not pan out.

The loyal following is the only thing that has held EQ1 on the radar. SOE wants to put fresh life into the game, but they dont want to lose the people who stuck it out.

Mark my words, if he FTP crowd starts to consistantly put money into SOE's coffers then you can expect that more will be done that way regardless of loyalty... they are a business.... they started EQ1 to make money.....

I think they will eventually find a happy medium where the casual player can do so as much or as little as they want and the heavy player can reap the benifits of a long term commitment. The same game engine is in place reguardless whether someone plays for 1 or 2 days a month or all 30, so its not hurting SOE alot to have a 5% (guessing) poulation that pays nothing either thru SC or Subscription.

Til then we are going to have some growing pains.

NOTE: By all means keep up the discussion, how else we they know something needs fixed.

I think j merc should be part of at least the silver package. I agree about all the other restrictions. I tried to level up one time with an app 5 merc and it was beyond horrible. App mercs are like 1/10th of the strength and durability of a j1 merc. It's such a huge difference. I feel bad for anyone that has to go through first 60 levels solo/molo with an apprentice merc.

I have silver on 3 accounts, but, I am considering getting gold, not for a more powerful mercenary, but for one that actually works! I maybe have only payed $5 once for silver, but my wizard merc spams spells that do 0 damage, or do absolutely nothing for that matter. They do this endlessly, it makes absolutely no sense. There is nothing balanced about the "balanced" stance when all they do is spam a spell that does absolutely nothing. Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong? I have tried setting them as main tank, and they still spam **** that says "takes a blow to the head" or something like that.

I have heard some people say they wish soe would release every race and class of merc, some want to be able to have two at a time active. I agree with someone else I wish it was one merc per group that way you had to make a choice between healing, tank or dps and maybe more people would group.

You can get a free upgrade for any type of merc, its called grouping with a real players and you can due that at F2P.

darn did not see its a necr post untill its too late. lol

That spell is from the 'Concussion' line ("Someone staggers from a blow to the head."). It's their deaggro spell. It's integral for a nuker, especially with a subpar tank/aggro source. At later levels, they get spells that do damage and also lower aggro (like Mindfreeze) but at early levels, Concussion is it. The alternative is to have the merc die on every pull from overaggro (something a PC can easily avoid).

This is EQ. Even though you don't SEE a spell doing something doesn't mean it's not doing something. Using that line of thought, spells like slow and cripple and tash/malo (or anything that's not a heal, snare, root, or damage shield) 'does absolutely nothing'. For almost the entire first five years of this game's existence, spells that did next to no damage were the best for aggro (disease cloud for SK/Necro and flame lick for Rangers/Druids) but besides the pretty graphics, they did nothing easily discernible.

There's nothing wrong with your merc aside from the fact that it's a lower tier. If you want it to nuke more aggressively, set it to 'Burn'.

I really think they should add more unlockers for F2P players to make it more playable. They do an excellent job with Everquest 2' Free to play.

I am sure alot of people would LOVE to have a real player to group with instead of a merc but this day and time its not always a viable thing. The average player has no desire to group with anybody else unless they are allready friends with them. I have played off and on since F2P hit and even in a guild i might have gotten into two or three groups. PEople are more interested in multiboxing with mercs for exp than take a chance on a player that may or may not be any good. Its a sad truth but that seems to be where the game is at now at least from a lvl 1 to 80ish standpoint.
