Morning All,

I am sure there have been numerous threads on this topic but it's Friday and its been a long week. I am too lazy at this point to look for them.

My favorite zone in EQ has to be Crystal Caverns. For some reason I am always drawn to that zone. Probably because you can park a toon in the small town located in it. Then you proceed to work on the Orc population to build faction with the Dorfs. Once you get to the level above dubious then you can start selling stuff to the merchants and banking your loot!

After you build faction up (presently at indifferent) then you head over to the harder side of the zone and go after the stalog terrors (they hit hard!) and the Geonids (loot is uber). They do not give any faction hits/gains but the experience and loot is fairly substantial.

You can start at this zone around level 30-31 and leave after level 43-44.

What's everyone's favorite zone and please explain why? This will give the forum population a chance to read about other possible places to level and experience.

Stonebrunt Mnts.
It is a zone great for high teens to 40s. It has quality pelt drops, some nice quests, a pos EXP modifier, a bank close by, and is a beautiful zone. I think I will head there in just a little bit with my shaman. )

Sebilis = Best dungeon ever.

Crystal Caverns is a mere upstart compared to the wonder which is the ancient Iksar capitol. It shares some aspects of CC (rather CC shares them with Seb since Seb was first) in that it's larger than expected and full of distinct areas and camps. It has a good range of mobs from the lvl 45ish Zol and Jin frogloks up through Reets, crypt guardians, juggernauts and eventually Trakanon himself. It has a great ambiance to it, feeling like you're exploring a lost and sunken tropical city, alternating ruins and caverns, frogloks and myconids and ancient guardians remaining from the city itself. The camps are legendary: Disco, Bugs, Jail, Chef, Crypt, King, Juggs. Mob placement made teamwork and skill a requirement and the need to crawl to a zone-out only magnified it.

Some of it may be nostolgia but Sebilis seems to embody everything a dungeon should be: large and interesting to explore, lots of named, excellent loot potential, difficult, tied deeply into the game lore and insanely fun. Other zones capture some of those aspects but none other capture all of it like Sebilis did.

ToV is a prett sweet zone. Even though I was there for months and got completely burned out on it. Lots of dragons, you had to make good use of the walls and hallways to avoid AoE, lots of great drops (for the time). You had to learn quite a bit of strategy for that zone, and it was a good training ground for raiding. I also liked the fact you didn't need a key to get in.

Since I'm an undecisive fellow, I have more than one single favorite zone...

Sebilis is right up there. A location where CC can make or break a group. I played here a bit on Cafeen was able to really learn the art of the Mez (keeping up to 6 or so mobs mezzed at once, with roamers coming in as others die is pretty darn exciting).

I was also always a fan of the Tower of Frozen Shadow. It has a nice progression to it, nice visuals (for Velious Era) and is fun to play in.

For some reason, City of Mist (pre-rework, haven't played it much since) is also one of my favorites. Some really good exp and halfway decent loot was to be found here. Reaver runs with 15+ chains of them was a blast as well. (And remember when Rapture used to work on those guys? /sigh they "nerfed" it).

Plane of Hate v2 is another. Now a great exp zone with some really nice (even by today's standards) loots. Essence of Vampire sucked though. (23+ hate runs, about 6 pre-revamp, the rest after).

There are others...but I'll end up listing half the zones in EQ if I keep going ;).

(edit~ Something interesting is developing here...I notice that most of the zones listed (with my exception of PoHv2) are all from RoK/SoV era...nostalga? or something more? Just a one-off observation)

In regards to Cafeen's observation regarding old-world zones...

I simply don't have the time or the High level toon to experience the higher level zones. I absolutely hate Draknic's Scar because the mobs hit so much harder then the old world zone mobs...

I have also never been a fan of instanced zones except for LDoN's. The MM are sort of nice but seem quickly put together.

Velk's lab seems to be a neat zone but have yet to make it farther in then the spiders @ the entrance.

Tower of Frozen Shadow is really neat. It's as close to a raid type zone as I have come by. I brought my 55 chanter there recently and made it to the 6th floor before running out of daggers and couldn't conjure a pet... haven't been back but really want the last key.

Therefore Velious is probably my favorite expansion. The planes of Power zones are my second favorite but have little to know experience on the planar progression..

I agree with Jophed that Sebilis is one of the best designed dungeons, period. But my all-time favorite is probably Lower Guk, for many of the same reasons.

The design is wonderful. There are many distinct areas, of ruined city, caves, underwater tunels. The mob diversity and placement is also well done - for the appropriate levels it's a good challenge to get to where you want. It has depth, history, and appeal.

Of course, I can also solo the whole place since the 50s, but that's another matter entirely. Smiley: sly

I would have to say my favorite zone has got to be Unrest. This place was just so damn fun back in the day.

I dig the Unrest mission too. Nice being able to xp in an old zone that you loved.

Najena is one of the places I have had lots of fun.

Tower of Frozen Shadow is up there.

Katta Castellum is my favourite city in the game (though Thurgadin is cool too).

I have probably spent more time in the Overthere than anywhere else (having fun... spent alot of time fruitlessly in Xorbb's Gorge).

Always like Plane of Innovation as it seemed like a place you had to be awake in. Did some great grouping in there with my chanter.

My Favourite definately ebbs and flows. Gunthak/Dulak was up there for a long time, lately Emerald Jungle has been my top choice. In the end, if I had to be trapped in one place to do 10000 kills shrouded to the level that the mobs are dark blue... I would go with the Warrens.

My all time favorite is the warrens. I also love splitpaw (the old one) the mini dungeon in thurgadin, stonebrunt, and the Hole.

WoS....I've been there 4 times between level's 58 and 63 and wiped every time. Sounds like a silly reason to name a zone as a favorite, but I like the difficulty and nervous feeling I get at the thought of going there again.

Favorite zone would have to be Tower of Frozen Shadow. Such a moody and interesting place.

Estate of Unrest was a fun dark place when I began playing the game. Blast those hags!

My favorite city would have to be Katta. It's such a great place...the architecture is fantastic and the views as well. Too bad my Iksar would need to do lots of faction work to walk around.

Best designed Zone imho is Crushbone, numerous camps, none on top of each other with a nice lvl progression.

I find the North Ro LDoN zones challenging to pull in and nicely designed so long as you're not reaching the top of the level curve.

Undershore, is the first zone i walked into recently and gone Wow! but shame the content wasn't upto much.

I never hunted Seb while it was Xp and everyone wasn't Twinked to the nines so it was trivial when i went there.

What about everyone's favorite 20 or below zone?

My personal favorite is South Ro. It has merchants, a place to bind, orc camps, Dervish camps etc.

And when your group reaches lvl 20 you can start on eof two LDONs from the local Wayfarers Camp.

Favorite Pre-level 20 zone has got to be Blackburrow. I spent many nights when I first started eq trying to get my characters to learn this zone.

The thunderstorms added so much to the effect. So cool to med and regen while sitting by the waterfall listening to the rain and distant howls.

The trains were horrible back then. I learned quickly that if a few peeps ran by you headed out of the zone that you had better get out of the way.

It was always fun when a group camping the elites in the "green room" disintegrated and the sole survivor or two made a break for the exit. There was a lot of ground to cover between there and the zone-out so your train would grow to inlcude half of Blackburrow. Smiley: lol

Warrens. No question. It feels like a kobold warren with the twisting passages, crowded mob density and constant howling echoing off the cave walls.

Prior to the Warrens being in game, I would have said Runnyeye. I like how they made it an actual goblin 'city' complete with a section of apartments, canals, arena, lookout tower and, of course, the working banker and merchants. My bard used to use sneak to sell and bank after farming, my Iksar beastlord actually got faction up so as to use Runnyeye as a friendly Old World haven.

Personally, I love the Grey. I know it's not going to be a popular one, but since my highest lvl toon is a Pali, I have spent a decent amount of time there, both on exp and AA's. Hardly anyone in the zone, so you get free run while the LFG is up, and undead around every corner! A Paladins dream come true. As for lower levels, I like the Warrens and SK (finger-lickin good!).
#22 Jan 16 2006 at 12:27 PM Rating: Decent
Sol A, Kael, SSRA, PoI, more or less ordered by level. If I had to pick one I'd say Sol A.
#23 Jan 16 2006 at 2:54 PM Rating: Decent
I just can't pick one but here's a few I love:

TOFS - I spent most of my paladin's 30-40s here and much of my cleric's 30s as well. Undead reigns supreme and the layout of this zone made it easy to navigate and feel like you're progressing. Moving up a level to harder mobs was the absolute best feeling for my characters. And making it to the 7th floor and taking out Tsserina herself is an experience I will never forget! Though I'm still looking for that rumored 8th floor.

Kurn's Tower - this is a must zone for any new toon I create. I live here from about 11 to 18 and sometimes higher if I can snare. I still haven't seen but maybe half of the basement though I've never run outta mobs to kill even with 40 other people in the zone.

Forgotten Halls - when this zone was released it was horrible. Lag was crazy, the mobs aggroed all at once - I didn't think I'd ever come back to it. But they redid it and now I love to go here on my non-social toons like necro and shadow knight. It's nice sometimes to have a zone to yourself and since there's no minimum number of toons required to get the instance I love to solo here. No trains, no worries, and decent xp. I'd like to see some more pp or drops added to the loot table - but for a few hours away this is the best place to go.

Plane of Mischief - this zone is so much fun. With all the wild undertones and odd mobs. Everytime I visit this zone I just can't help but roar into laughter. My wife has popped her head into my office more than a few times to see if I'm ok while I was in this zone.

Plane of Growth - I love to visit this zone with my Druid. There's just nothing cooler than standing next to your god chilin. While my pally doesn't like it here much anymore since they changed some of the mobs around and he gets aggro upon zone-in I'd have to say it's not one of my absolute favorites but I still love the zone.

Harbringers Spire - The only OOW zone I can stand. It's layout is nice with nameds in each of the hallways, makes for a nice place to get some decent gear for mid 50s toons and easy camps. And because the camps are down long hallways there are seldom any trains.

The Hive - Ok, so I haven't spent a ton of time in this zone - I still love the big spiders and the crazy hive thing. I've gotten so lost in there trying to figure out if I should be going up or down the ramps. It's a fun place if you live long enough to enjoy running around in it.

Favorite 18-21 is Kerra Island. No one else there. Lots to kill. Every soloable as an enchanter. Charm is great here. Bind in Tox right outside the tunnel and then sell and bank in PoK. No real faction hits. Up your fishing skills while you meditate. Up you swimming skills coming and going.
#25 Jan 19 2006 at 10:34 PM Rating: Decent
Even though I am retired, I would have to say that back in 99 playing in Black Burrough was totally nerve wracking...So many trains and the only way to gain an advantage when heading for the zoneline was to jump off the waterfall, turn around under water as you broke the surface, and then hope you could get out before the Elites or the Commander caught you. Yeah I would definitely say I enjoyed that zone, at that time a Heckova lot. On the other hand I hated Unrest. Too long of a straight run to escape from back wall group...heheh...actually had a blast there as well!!!
Actually enjoyed every part of EQ for quite a few years, just found it time to move on...Tilac ( wood elf GAR on MM )
