I know .. this isn't the EQ Tech Support Forum.
Unfortunately, Techies from SOE dont reply on that forum, so I thought I'd try here. People here are more likely to know enough to get this solved. (OK. So I dont have a lot of faith in techies at SOE... I admit it.)

I have 2 systems: (seemingly) identical, down to the chip.
On one, I get fast times starting the game (initial file check etc)
on the other, it is slow. Also slow in loading after the password, and in zoning.

WinXP, btw.

Any ideas ?

There could be a couple things affecting seemingly identicial systems.

1) Background processes (especially active-antivirus (i.e. Auto-Protect). If one system has it on and the other is off, this could be causing this difference. (I know my file check runs a lot slower when I forget to disable auto-protect before running it on my system). Check to make sure that neither are running any extra programs before starting and see how it goes.

2) HD "stuff" - One system's HD may be more fragmented (or even full) than the other. Look into this and see if it affects anything. (Commonly, largely fragmented drives will perform slower than unfragmented). May also try rebooting the slower one to see if it's better.

3) Malware - Malware will slow down a system. It's a possiblity that the slower system could have picked something up. Run the scans, update the software, run the scans again and see if anything comes up.

4) Lastly...Hardware issues - A piece could be failing somewhere in the slower comp. Bad RAM or something. This will certainly cause performance issues, but is probably the least common (thankfully).

5) Luck. Comps are screwy.

Beyond that, I don't really know, but a few things to check for at least.

Good luck.

Cafeen is right on with his listing, but may I add one more? It may also be how the two PC's are connecting through your router. Are they both hardwired or wireless? I have 3 sets at my house, and oddly enough, the wireless runs slightly faster that the other two. This is probably due to the newer network card and protocols in it when compared to the other, older PC's. Try experimenting to see if connecting one before the other has any effect, or try different plugs in the router. A way to check the speed of your connections is to use a trace check like http://www.dslreports.com/. This will allow you to see how fast either PC is connecting to the internet, in case it's a hardware problem.

Cafeen sort of covered this already, but;
If you normally use computer A, and only turn on computer B to play EQ, computer A will be updated and ready to run when you start the EQ pathcer, while B will spend network resources on checking for (and possibly downloading) Windoze and anitvirus updates, processes that may slow down patching significantly. Try turning on comp B a few minutes before you start the EQ patcher, that might do the trick.
Good luck

You can also edit the eq.ini file to turn off specific items that are loaded when EQ starts. That will free up more memory for faster loads, less lag, etc.
Good luck.

great advice all the way around!

to check start up process run msconfig.

if don't already have the short-cut to it you can run a search for it.

start/search/type in msconfig/copy shortcut to desktop/run it/select the start up tab/uncheck anything that you don't need running.

this will clear up alot of resources. alot of times when you instal games/programs whatever, it will automaticly place them in the start up. very anoying. adware/spyware programs are natorious for this.
