I am a relatively new player to EQ and love it!

I was just wondering, how long will it stay alive. I really dont want to have to switch to WoW or EQ2

Eq will rpobably be around for atleast another 2 years. A more important question for you would be will the game still be playable for years to come. The current game population is very old (65+) and mostly comprised serios raiding guilds.

If you are a person who looks forward to raiding for several hours a day several times a week then the game is still the best ou there. IF you are a casual player just starting you will find play a little more difficult and frustrating. The newest expansion DoDH really made the LFG situation worse then it was before hand so joining a family guild is a must. Also 3 of the last 4 expansions had little quality xp grinding content and were seemingly geared to raiding.

Good LUck and may I suggest having your main toon be a strong solo class.

It will last as long as someone is willing to pay to play. I personally expect to live at least another 20 years or so.

:lol

Dredging up an old post. Sorry.

EQ is not mostly comprised of serious raiding guilds. That's completely false. There are plenty of casual guilds around (probably more than the serious raiding guilds), that like to group and have fun.

I agree, there are more casual players than die hard raiders. I just came back to EQ after a 3 year break, been loving every casual minute of it. Just get yourself into a small guild that doesn't require anything other than having a good time, (but that raids from time to time).

EQ will be around for quite a while, 2 years seems short, 20 years seems a bit long, how bout a middle ground. Say 10 years or so.

My guess is around 2 more years but I imagine that they will offer it as long as people are willing to pay, I just dont think it will be worth playing in 2 years, either you will have played through everything there is to offer or if you are just starting there wont be anyone around and too far to catch up.

It is about the gear for a lot of people. It is exciting to upgrade to 'raid gear', then to get 'uber gear' but it is diminishing returns after a while. Who is going to care if they have some gloves with 750hp and the upgrade has 850hp.

On the other hand there are people that want to see if they can beat any mob that soe can throw at them and I imagine they would be kept busy for a long time.

I wrote this to SoE right before EQ2 was launched. Based upon their response, the fact that Titanium was just released, Ro is coming up, and the fact that they still make money from this, I would say we have 5-7 years of longevity, reasonably.

I do have to say though, it IS interesting that Stormhammer is shutting down...

To Whom This May Concern:

I have been playing Everquest now for about 4 years, and to say that I am a large fan of the game would be a huge underestimate.

I began wondering, though, based upon the upcoming release of EQ2, am I going to have to worry about Sony closing it's servers down anytime soon?

With the release of the newest expansion, right around the launch time of EQ2, it would appear that Sony does not have plans of closing anything down, but any confirmation of this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Response:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Online Entertainment Customer Service

No plans to close any servers. if anything, we'd like the game to continue to grow, and we will be supporting it, as such.

EQ has that certain...something...to it. No one can really put a finger on it, but there's just something to the EQ world that keeps people here (and bringing them back, and bringing new ones in).

While many are nostalgic for the times of old (see the "Old-School server" threads), they keep plugging away at it. New content is being released a couple times a year (and has been since...PoP?) and people are progressing through all levels of play.

Yes, it's changed a lot (even since I started around Velious/SoL era) in both good and bad ways, but it's still going strong and will be so long as they wish it to.

It's true, the majority of the player base now has at least 1 high level character and the majority of new content is being slanted toward the raider/hardcore non-raider, but that doesn't mean there's nothing for those below either :).

It's been around now for...7?ish years. Don't see it going away anytime soon.

I would be willing to bet, that this game will continue to evolve and be around 30+ years from now. The only thing that would stop it is some type of paradyme in game play that would not be adaptable to EQ. There are so many peeps that have so much invested in the game and it is so deep with lore and content that at this point it is hard for a simular genre game to compete. It is not nor will ever be a game for most 14-22 YO but it will always be atractive for the 25+ crowd. I have tried Counter Strike and other online games and they never reach the level of comunity this has. That is very attractive to the more mature crowd. So thats my opinion for what its worth

Ok so I just joined the EQ Game. I would say it will be around for a while. I used to play Ultima Online(I was one of the first 500 players to inially start), but then after 7 years they started getting gready and wanting more money, after that alot about 3,500 vetrans left the game I was one of them. Ive been told from a friend it's going downhill and I suggested EQ to him. As I see it as long as SOE doesn't get gready, keeps their price the same, and keeps fufilling the need for new things, Maybe even new land if it requires it, EQ should last for a while.

Please link to the data that shows this. Raiding guilds do not hang out in PoK. They do not hang out in WoS LFG. You think EQ is made up of mostly non raiding casual players because that is all you see while playing.

Everquest's population is primarily raiding guilds.

Well Fiplin, I have heard a rumor that there is this bright glowing ball way up in the air, and lots of green, skinny things on the floor instead of carpet. My wife tells me it's just beyond the big door in the front of my house, but I think it's a trick! The last time she got me to go out that door, we went so a Plane of Hell that she called Anti-Que-Ing, and I never want to go there again. It smelled like old ladies and bad paint... oh the horror! Smiley: cry

I'll stay right here in my virtual world, thank you!

It's a really scary place. Just wait until you attack a wolf and it turns out to be a pet of some vicious old lady duel wielding an umbrella and a purse, who is really under conned.

And when you try to get a nice dex or agility buff they give you a hard time. Kei, forget it! And if you mention you don't have virtue yet, you get a lecture. When you walk into someplace where you see an oven through the windows, and just want to practice your tradeskills they go nuts. They get really annoyed it you loot stuff too.

And right clicking doesn't even work.

RL Blows

The exp and advancement systems are extremely slow.

The loot system sucks.

None of my clothes make me stronger, or smarter.

I seem to have Ranger level mitigation.

And finally, I don't know where my bind point is, so I am afraid of dying.

Also, it is interesting to note that a lot of players who migrated to WOW have come back , myself being one of them. I would wager that EQ will be around for some time to come.

At least two years.

I hope.

Hey, I haven't payed all those years for SOE to shut EQ down, now that I finally make some advancements in game!!!

I remember folks asking this same question and getting pretty much the same answers in 2000. I agree that this game will stay around as long as there are those of us who want to play. I'd guess five more years at a minimum and fifty at a max.

I think it would really **** people off if they spent countless hours leveling and doing raids, and LOTs of money for monthly fee/expansions only to have it close down. Now if everyone starts to leave(which WONT happen probaly) then I see why they would close it but too many people have a lot invested in this game.
