Dear Everquest Toons,

Please forgive me for I have sinned. I am not sure how I can look myself in the mirror. I beg forgiveness for my grevious crime....

Late Tuesday night I was surfing the internet and checking the various Plat sites and Ebay because I was bored and a little drunk. So far I have resisted temptation but I was weak. I noticed a certain account for sale that was really cheap. It was on my server and was a huge improvement over my present level 54 Character. Being intoxicated and just recently the receiver of a nice bonus paycheck, I submitted a bid. It was a more of a joke bid since the starting price was only $50.00. My max bid was only $55.00. I fully expected this particular toon to bid well into the hundred's of dollars.

Late last night the auction ended and to my surprise when I got to work today, that I had won the auction! My feelings have swayed from elation to guilt.

The person has emailed me the account and we have exchanged emails today at work. The character is level 68 with 300aa points. This person has not played EQ for 10 months or so and has moved on to other mmorpgs.

I spent $50.00. If the account does not work then shame on me. I am out of a small amount of cash.

What would you guys do in this situation? I don't have the time to play much and this would allow me to visit zones that presently kick my enchanters *****

Please be gentle...

Bub

Just be prepared when that person yanks their account back in a few months after you've geared / leveled.

Nothing you can do about it.

I'm not going to rip your for buying, as it seems you have done that well enough yourself.

What I do suggest is visiting class boards and reading up on your character's abilities. Read up on all of the spells and whatnot to be sure you understand what to use where and when.

When you are ready to play it try not to be the Main healer or main tank etc, ease yourself in. This is the best that you can do for yourself and other players.

Beyond that all I can say is enjoy.

The problem I've always had with buying an account (money and ethics aside) is that what happens when you get the account, play on it for 6 months getting all sorts of AA's/levels/gears/flags and then the former owner suddenly decides they aren't done with EQ after all and gets Sony to get their account back?

It's happened, one of my former guildies on another server as a matter of fact. Now you're out the cash you dropped for it and you're also out all the time you spent on the toon.

At least you can two-box now. I haven't two-boxed myself but I hear something like WinEQ works pretty well. If you go to a zone where you can charm mobs, then a chanter/druid combo could be fun.

Just make sure to keep all the cash and loot on your main account.

Didn't realize they could yank the account from under my feet. I figured I just used my Credit card and change the password.

Of course, I really don't know what I am doing since I really wasn't expecting this.

However, I will practice and study up before attempting groups.

At level 68 - what do Druids do besides heal and dot???

The 2 boxing thing intrigues me. My Computer is fairly new and can handle it. I will check out EQWindows.

Thanks for the replys.

Ok, just say 5 Hail Innoruuks, then relist this account on eBay with a starting bid of $100. Everyone wins.

At level 63 I am using DoTs less and less in groups. Now, I nuke, heal, buff and most importantly...PORT hehe.

Try solo charming. You should have practice with your enchanter. Druids can do more or less the same with animals. You wont have mez to get control but it's not bad.

Wow, re-reading the post I have no idea where I got that from. I hope I wasn't right or folks might think I'm the one who sold it! Well, expect for the fact that the highest level I've achieved is 61 - hehe.

EDIT: I must have assumed by "visiting places" you meant porting. See? I'm a genious!

Im glad to see so many supportive responses in this thread. While i think straight buying a 68 char with 300 AA's isn't the best idea ever, i think its OK in some circumstances. One way is to buy a high level account to PL your other toons. I still think this is iffy too cause you dont learn how to play your character, but look at monster missions. Those are just as bad as buying a high level toon to PL you up.

Buying Plat and item's and characters online is probably THE biggest taboo in everquest, but you know that its a HUGE industry. People do it, and they do it alot. I doubt every level 30 char in the game has a 70 friend that has a million plat just to throw around to twink him out. Lets get over it already. Its like we are the FCC editing out bad language on TV when EVERYONE says that ****. hehe. well thats my two copper. If a person doesn't have a lot of time and has a lot of extra cash, ***** it if they want to buy stuff in RL let them. That fact alone doesn't make them a bad player.

I am not a fan of buying and selling of anything for real money in EQ. Seems to cheapen the game for me. I hate joining a group and finding out its really just 2 or 3 of us and a bunch of bots. It's dissapointing to group up with high level toons only to find out they've bought the account or PL'd their way through most of the levels and don't understand the finer details of their class that can only be obtained through years of play.

But I also realize I'm playing a game that has moved on. It's not the EQ I remember and never will be. Times have changed and I'm just one of a few dwindling relics still mired in the old mindset of how things ought to be.

I don't begrudge you for playing the game how you see fit. I miss the game for what it was but I can't say I hate those who have made it what is now.

No one can beat you any harder than you are doing yourself.

Play it and enjoy.

Don't forget that poor toon you are leaving in the 50's though...if you played him that far, you really must have a connection to it.

I'm of mixed opinion on the whole buying and selling issue when it comes to plat and items, but I'm totally against buying an entire puppet.

Since you've apparently already done that (and had the yarbles to actually admit it here), the only advice I'd give is that you play the hell out of that Druid solo and learn it VERY VERY well before taking it into a group situation. No one should be learning a 68 puppet in a group setting yet it happens everyday, to the detriment of all who play.

Two-boxing for a few weeks is a great way to do it, and don't forget to learn the importance of every spell (and AA!!) in your book.

I know around here buying plat, toons and gear is a gaming no-no. I don't think it's such a great idea but mostly for my own reasons of what I think a game is for. Still, I bet there are people who have done it, even while being it 'against' it publically. They just haven't said anything.

Keep it to yourself next time. Smiley: wink

Enjoy the new toon. Make sure to study up on the class if it's one you've not played before.

As for worries about the original owner trying to take back the account there are several steps you can take to reduce the chance of that.

Change the password. (duh)

Access the account on the Sony website and change EVERYTHING on it to your information. Most especially - CHANGE THE EMAIL ADDRESS. The simplist way for someone to take an account back without a valid password is to have a new one sent to the email on the account. If it's YOUR email it goes to you instead, and let's you know they are trying to take it back. Obviously, also change the credit card info, SOE pays a lot of attention to who is currently paying the bills. Poke around, make sure you have changed everything.

Call CS and change the secret question. Be polite. Tell them you want to reset it. If the CS rep says no, thank them, hang up, and call again to get a different rep. They can do it for you if they want to.

With no password, any communication going to your email address and not theirs, no answer to the secret question, and no current credit card info the original owner will have a hard time taking it back. Possibly they could do it with the original credit card info if they still have it, but it would be difficult and they would need a sympathetic CS rep. It's still good advice to keep any loose pp, and droppable gear on your original account.

The original owner can always CD key back the character, just be aware.

The most repugnant I saw recently was a cleric CD keyed back after nearly a year. They sold the cleric to the main character dealer on FV, they took cash payment for the character. After one year they decided to CD key it back. So they stole it back. Its nothing short of absolute theft. When you sell a car, if you kept a spare set of keys and drove it away from its new owners a year later you would be in jail for theft. I see no difference with EQ characters.
The person who did this has lied in various ways to different people about why they did it. Claiming that the character was stolen, then that it was not stolen but they "loaned" the character to the new owner.
Liars stories always change ......

Its why I do not like Ebay. As that can occur. But then trying to stop ebay is like trying to stop alchohol consumption. People will still do it, even if you make it illegal or against a EULA.

The safest and least risk approach with this character (assuming it is equipped) is to use it to PL your current level 54 character. Use EQwindows and run 2 instances if you do not have 2 PCs. that way, if the character is CD keyed back, you have not lost much and you have not put time and effort into a character you have lost, but you have pl'd your own.

Something I heard awhile back. It's pretty dirty but in a twisted light it makes sense.

Some guy (like you) purchased a toon. He geared and levelled the toon. One day he logged in and the screen said there were a bunch of unsucessful attempts to log in.

After some digging, the purchaser found out the toon he had purchased had a history of being purchased only to be taken back by the origional owner.

Well, the purchaser talked to a necro and offered up the purchased toon as a sacrificer. After getting sac'd as much as possible, he deleted all the no drop gear and gave away all the gear he couldn't sell reasonably fast. The purchaser then sold all the plat and deleted the toon from the account. After deleting the toon, he made another toon on that server with the same name. Doing this really messes with restoring toons from back up.

If you don't want to be that nasty, there's always the option of moving your new purchase to your main account. If you want access to both your current main and the new toon just go down and buy the EQ box and move the druid to that new account. That way if the origional owner ever does take the account back at least you'll have the high level toon.

i think u can change the password so the old user cant use but.....if he squeels to soe and says u hacked well then ur **** out of luck me thinks.as for ripping the person who posted the original post about buying the toon*shrug*as long as u dont rep the toon like u put time into it its all good.u can totally use it to level/key urself wich sometimes is easier than waiting for friends.its sometimes less of a headache than waiting for ur gf/wife to come home and help u out(ty celestium i love joo dont hate me).anyway like i said as long as u dont rep like u put the time in its all good.*note:i have never bought a toon cuz i think its kinda retarded to play a mmo and try and zerg thru it cuz it defeats the point of playing one but i've seen the benefits of some1 buying a toon and having him sidelined to help*

I do not see anything wrong with buying a account. People say this crap like "Oh you won't know how to play your charactor". I have jumped on friends accounts and played several high end accounts. I have played 60+ enchanters, 60+ druids, 60+ clerics, 60+ tanks, etc from friends and relitives. Each time I was just as valueable group member as the others. You take about 5 minutes and look over the spells/skills and see what you got.

So grats on your new high end account.

Sure it can happen that your new account can be yanked from you if the original owner wants. However, considering how common it is for people selling accounts this isnt really common. risk isnt really that big, dont worry about it.
Learn your new druid while soloing first before you group. Druids are excelent soloers. Also, make sure you get the buff steeloak (also known as 10). Its the buff you will use the most. And remember as a lvl 70 toon you have it 10 times as easy to get a group compared to lvl 69 so lvl > AA imo. Especially since you allready had 300 AAs.
I would never buy a char for myself, it wouldnt feel like "my char". However, I understand some of reasons some do it, and yours is ok IMO.
I wish you gl and Im sure your gonna have a blast!
(btw, if char is guilded. Deguild the first thing you do or guild can get offended).
