Why do you guys care if someone inspects you? maybe there curious on how you got so much cool stuff or was wondering if you could tell them how to get that weapon you have? some people freak out? in my opinion thats very weird, gay and stupid.

Some consider it rude. They preferr people to ask first. I personally could care less.

Personally I don't care - I only get mad when people inspect me and ask for money.

They get mad when I respond "no" or "I'm broke" (which I very well maybe after buying all this stuff you see on me) - usually their retort (in exact words) "dude, your rich you could afford it".

So for me at least, its not the act of inspecting me, its the follow up question.

Personally I don't care, but a polite person would ask first. When people beg from me, I just ask if they can give me a few THOUSAND plats cause that's what my spells cost.

What bothers me is people who use the term gay to mean lame. I don't happen to be gay, but I believe all people have feelings so why use a person's sexuality in an insulting way? It only shows insensativity and possible insecurity in a person's own sexuality.

Wondering why some people act this way or that shows you have a lot to learn. It's simple, because everyone is different and has different likes and dislikes. A conciderate person realizes that the things they do can or will have effects on others and tries to do as much as they can to minimize negative results. Asking before inspecting is one way, camp checks are another.

Yes it's a game, but you aren't dealing with NPC's, you're dealing with real people, so treat them like real people. In the real world(if such garb were worn in the real world) you wouldn't just brush aside someone's cloak to see the sword they have at their side, you'd ask.

In the future, assume people will act negatively to any action you might take and try to think of the best way to get a positive result. (Yes, even on silly things. I had someone yell at a cleric I had for healing them in a fight because they wanted to work up their bandaging skill, so you REALLY never know!!)

I have turned off the inspect feature as well as the notification that others are inspecting me. I did this way back in paludal caverns where looting was a free for all, and more often than not, someone was already looting a corpse and you end just inspecting them, lol....

well here is a lesson in real life.
If a group of people think an action of yours is bad manners, THEN TO THEM IT IS. Posting here to say "whats up with them" is pointless.

Do you want to run the risk of annoying people? Then inspect away... BUT DONT ACT ALL SUPRISED IF YOU ANNOY SOMEONE.

Do you want to be known as someone with nice manners? A person others would like to group with? THEN ASK FIRST. It actually doesnt matter what you think about this.. all that matters is what OTHERS think.

It is all about manners and etiquette, personally I don't mind being inspected as long as there is no follow up questions, especially begging ones.
On a side not my brother is gay and I find it offensive that people use the term to describe something bad. These people are basically homophobics who probably are raceist as well, with a banner of the swaztica (spelling?) above the bed and who go to a meeting every so often where they burn crosses and wear pillow-cases on their heads. Grow up.

Much like Raknruin said, the follow-up questions are a lot more annoying than the inspections itself in most cases, but to some the inspection is annoying enough. Between people begging and/or asking if I'd sell them my gear, it's really annoying.

I do recommend that people who are especially annoyed about people inpescting them might want to turn the notification off. They shouldn't have to, but because their are more rude people in the world than nice people, it would be a good idea for your sanity. hehe.

Don't think it will be too difficult to type out "May I inspect you please?"...5 words, 20 letters, 3 spaces, 1 question mark. It is just plain manners.

Lately if someone inspects me unasked I just face him and ask plainly "Like what you saw?" - guess what? Mostly they just ran away, as if I had scared them or whatever.

Sometimes my Barbarian gal does this on purpose in saying: "Have you conned me prior to inspecting?" - works every time, I either get an apology, a run-away or a big laugh :)

I think there are a lot of players out there who don't even know others get a message if they are inspecting and feel really caught if they learn about it for the first time ;-)

Who cares if the term gay was used to mean lame. In the fifties it meant happy. In the eighties it meant homosexual. Now it can mean either of them or it can mean lame or stupid, as was the case here. Unlike dead languages such as Latin and Aramaic, English words continue to evolve. Stop being offended at everything.

On the topic at hand, just tell folks if they get mad how to turn off their inspect messages. I like being inspected - it means that my equipment looks interesting, which is one of my main goals in playing. If somebody wants to inspect me and then beg me for cash that's fine too. I still have an ignore list, and those that beg seriously don't tend to stay around long.

OK Here is my opinion.....
I think it is silly to be upset when someone inspects you. I used to do it by accident constantly, so I turned it off to no offend anyone. But in the realistic part if you were actually standing by someone would you not see what they are wearing?????????

Just a few thoughts.

I have to admit that I never saw the point of being annoyed about inspecting. If I'm the ML in LDoN, e.g., I'll accidentally inspect everyone by the time I'm done, and nobody ever complained so far. I would think that most want to show off that nifty item they just got. Comparisons to real life just don't make much sense in this case to me. But as someone else here said, if it bothers someone else its enough of a reason not to do it, so I generally don't. Begging I find annoying in the game and in real life, on the other hand I make charitable contributions frequently in both spheres.

What I am very happy to see is someone else complaining about the derogatory use of gay. It is clearly offensive, even if no offense was intended. The rationalization used to excuse it as an evolution of the language misses the point of equating homosexuality with lameness. I am certain many people using this service and who play these games are homosexual or belong to other groups traditionally berated for some type of difference. This type of speech is far more hurtful and harmful than most people imagine, and the passive acceptance of it does long-term damage. I would hope that this community would be more welcoming, and I am glad that the comments here made a difference.

It didn't even occur to me that it might be considered rude to inspect people until people started asking me if they could inspect me.
I turned off inspecting other people just because it was annoying to have the inspect window come up accidently when I was trying to open a corpse or something.
I don't care if I get inspected.
If you inspect somebody and that's all you do and they complain that you are rude, I think they are the rude one. It's no imposition on them to be inspected. Begging and inspecting are totally different. Just because some people might beg for stuff after inspecting doesn't make the act of inspecting rude. Maybe it's a higher level of your class and you want to see what kind of equipment you should be trying to acquire. That seems a perfectly valid reason to inspect to me. A follow up question asking them how they acquired a certain item doesn't seem rude to me either. If people don't want to be social I would suggest they play solitaire.

Doesn't annoy me...Never has.
What annoys me is the, "Give me money or items!" Begging that goes on after but I just ask them if they read my Bio

I generally keep inspect off. But those times I am twinking someone and turn it on to see what they need, I inevidibly forget to turn it back off...upon inspecting someone I usually just say "OH Pardon me, nice thongs btw" and turn it back off.

Generally, the only people I run into that get pissy about being inspected are uber twinks <level 2 BL with a PSC> and people who should have been able to get better gear by now but are too embarassed to ask when they dont know where or how to farm. <Level 65 monk carrying a wu's trance stick and wearing an orc fang earring>

This would also go for being asked for permission to inspect.
I once asked a Bl if she might link the interesting 1hb's she was carrying to which she replied ********** no **** off!" this was little beyond rude and I couldn't help but link my waning light and reply, "Ah too bad, I'm leaving EQ for good and wanted to know if this would be better than what you have...np...good luck" As I camped I got replies of "No WAIT, WAIT!" <<<inforgivably mean i agree but I couldnt resist responding to her unwarrented nastiness>>>

The whole thing boils down to be polite...respect the fact that some people don't like having their underwear fondled by strangers...most don't care...just ask first anyway..and if someone asks you for permission to take an unwanted peek there is no need to be rude...a simple "No" will suffice.

Here's a perfect example of a person who doesn't care when they offend people, and has every intention of continuing to do so.

You're young, Trunks. Please don't grow up to be this guy.

As others have said, the fact that it bothers some people is reason enough to ask before doing it. Saying that because it doesn't bother you noone else should find it irritating is simply rude and disrespectful.

Oh, and we can generally tell when the inspect is accidental.

Let's see, people who are gay care, people who have gay friends and/or family care, and people who don't like seeing anyone's race or sexual preferences used in derogatory ways care. Accepting the word gay to mean lame is the SAME as is being okay to say "He was selling the book for $5, but I "jewwed" him down to $3." It's wrong and NOT a natural evolution of the English language. It's insulting and racist and if you can't tell the difference, that says something about you.

Unfortunately people are using the term gay in a derogatory mannor, just like some people in certain areas use the term Jew to mean cheap, but that's doesn't mean it's right or acceptable.

It's not that people are offended about everything, it's that many or most people are mature enough to be sensative about the feelings of other people. Which is a really what this entire post is about to begin with. It's also about people who don't think about anyone else's feelings when they do things and why they end up getting the reactions they get!

Back on the topic: To all those "inspect-needs-no-asking-for-players" - don't try to get around the fact that 99% of inspecting is just curiosity, laziness and boredom. Why taking the time to type a question about ones equipment when one mouse-click does the job also is most players attitude.

And I just happen not to like lazy people, be them RL or EQ....
