Rogue's ability: pick lock, no use?Follow

#1 Jan 11 2004 at 11:27 PM Rating: Decent
I have read in some websites that pick lock is an almost useless ability because there are tops 10 door to pick them. The same thing for disarm traps. I want to know if these two abilities have use in EQ and if in the expansion Lost Dungeons of Norrath this two abilities are use more often. I will welcome any information that can help me.

Both picklocks and disarm traps find more use in LDoN since there are chests which are locked. About 50% of the locks are mechanical in nature and require a rogue or bard to sense/disarm/pick them while the others are either cursed or runed and require a priest or caster with the appropriate spells. There are also floor traps which are less important but having a class to sense and disarm them definately helps.

Keep in mind that even outside of LDoN there's areas where having a rogue helps. You need a rogue to enter the crypt area of Sebilis for instance and most CoM reaver raids take a rogue along though now you can get a key for the door.

All in all it's not really a "class defining" skill in that few people make a rogue simply for traps and locks (as opposed to the great amount of melee DPS) but it's certainly worth keeping the skills maxxed out as you go through your career.

Also need pick lock and disarm trap for chardok to get to epic mobs for cleric, warrior, and enchanter. ALso there are traps and locks in Ssra temple. Also helps in karnors for VS.

I don't have LDoN, there are few door and traps in Norrath to pick and disarm. How I can max this two abilities?
And pick pocket can be a very dangerous skill to raise, any tips on how to raise it. Can I pick pocket a player?

No you can't pickpocket a PC but you can NPC obviously, I found the best way to increase your pickpocket skill was to simple attempt it on any mob (PC or animal, summoned, elemental) green to you. Mostly to avoid aggro by guard I did most of my pickpocketing in newbie areas

Bear in mind that Pick Lock is a skill that people need a rogue for. While in LDoN bard picklock is probably good enough most of the doors like Chardok and CoM require skill past the bard cap.

I have been on numerous raids - or even groups - where the presence of a rogue was required for this skill. Where in fact the raid would have to be aborted if the rogue did not show up.

And rather like people assume that rangers can track they assume that rogues can pick locks. To get all the way into a zone to the locked door with a raid of 20+ people for the rogue to say "I never bothered to train it" is embarrassing for all concerned.

Train picklock in Befallen. You are pretty safe there (even for a rogue). The second door on the left is locked. Try getting a DEX buff beforehand as this helps. There is also a place in PoT but this may be an exploit.

Sense traps can be trained "on the run" like Sense Heading used to be. Disarm traps needs an actual trap to disarm. Either do a lot of LDoN with lousy groups and you will have enormous amounts of time to practise while they med up after every kill, or try the one in SoLA.

Wrong.

You can attach this to a movement key just like Sense Traps, and you will skillup.

About lockpocking. Sadly, it is indeed true that the amount of (important) doors which can only be opened by Rogues is very low, although you might want to raise it just in case your guild borrows your rogue for a PoSky raid and needs to cancel it because your skill is too low. Like happened with me. Hehe.

Even the PoTranquility exploit is still there, so not having a maxed picklock skill is a no-go.

Good luck.

At 65 when doing raids both abilities are essential to the raid. Places like SSRA and VT both have a number of very nasty traps and several doors to pick. Doing the ST key you need a rogue to Pick a lock. Sebilis needs picklocking. All in all both skills are very useful. Now LDON also gives you plenty to disarm. Traps and chests.

To max your picklock skill you head to befallen there are several doors there that need picking.

To max your disarm skills I went to solb. If you go in and to the right you will come to a trap that you can disarm as long as you have patience. There is also a trap in sola.

Alternative place to practice lock pick if Befallen is busy: in East Freeport there's a locked door in the slummy part of town. There's a ground spawn inside the room that's used for the burning rapier quest.

If you're planning on going to VP I believe your LP skill has to be max (not just 201 like for most dungeons - CoM, Hole, Seb, etc).

Some of the reavers in CoM can be pulled without a rogue; in fact if you're coordinated you can get inside the building without picking the lock. Zasan doesn't like me spreading that around, though.

in CoM there is 1 Black Reaver spawn on the main level behind the first door, which you can get a key from any of the Captian's fo the Guard, its no drop and gets added to your key ring. only the Lift needs to be picked for Shm epic mob up there.
