The Scarlet Monastery is one of four strongholds of the Scarlet Crusade, the others being the Scarlet Bastion in the ruins of Stratholme and the towns of Hearthglen and Tyr's Hand. Found in Tirisfal Glades, the Scarlet Monastery was once a cathedral to the Light, now taken over by the fanatical zealots of the Crusade. The Monastery can be found northeast of the Undercity.

Instance Wings

The Scarlet Monastery is a series of four instanced areas for both Horde and Alliance players within the heart of the Monastery. The Monastery is made up of four instance wings, loosely tied in to each other.

The Armory

The Armory wing, which is the second entrance from the right, is challenging. There are many humanoids guarding the path to the Scarlet Champion, Herod, and mistakes here will result in wipes. Mobs here run for help when low health and you will also need the Scarlet Key to gain access to Herod's chamber.

Bosses

The Cathedral

The second entrance on the left leads to the Cathedral, a challenging instance. The reason being that both the path and the inside of the Cathedral must be cleared. Runners tend to pull other mob groups close by and many of these are casters. Once inside the cathedral and before engaging the final two bosses, players must clear out all of the mobs on both sides and the middle section, as these will come to the aid of the bosses and wipe the group. You will need the Scarlet Key, obtained in the Library, to open the Cathedral door.

Bosses

The Graveyard

The graveyard is an optional area in the overall instance so a lot of groups tend to skip over it. However, there are several nice items from a few rare spawns found in here. They don't appear in every run, which is why most players skip this area.

Bosses

Rare Bosses

The Library

Before players can enter either the Cathedral or the Armory, they will need to fight through the Library. The boss of this section, Arcanist Doan, holds the Scarlet Key. This key is the item players will need for the next two wings.

Attempted this as a 34 Belf warlock with a 44 Belf pally. Got through the library and armory fine, died twice but we rushed back in and made it through the rest okay. Doan was a close call, he transformed me into a sheep when he was at 3/4 health. We both survived though.

The only problem was the cathedral...we literally just opened the doors to it and ended up aggroing 4 scarlets. Fuuuuuuu. I don't think the cathedral is not doable with two people unless they're near or over 40.

These are memories of noob (<2 months in game) seriously undergeared (items lvl 22-31) paladin, who allmoast never uses buffs on top on his own 3...

Went GY and Libary through without dying. In Armory Herod finally got me, but I was unprepared for his immunities and wasted great deal of mana. Made mistakes too (forgot about Divine Shield, drunk health instead of mana, etc). Got him down to ~500, so it was still extremely close.

Would call GY easy at that level as groups are non-elites and can be consecrated in 2 casts (+ Retribution Aura damage). Torturers are low lvl and in small groups, so easy too. And c'mon - except these are all undead!!!

In Library and Armory CC comes into play. Repentance might be the best CC spell of all classes and during this 1 minute time, it gives, it is easy to take down 1 or 2 attackers. There is even no need for long pulls, cause there will be no runners! Hammer of wrath may not be enough for stoping them (had 3 runs in these 3 subinstances), but they will not run far on consecrated ground. While lvl 45 pala should and can take down 3 or 4 this level mobs, things get messy and potions may be needed if more than 3.

Another good fight was Houndmaster. Especially because he is immune to mind controll, whitch i did not expect. So I got to fight him with all of his pets.

Edit:

Got Herod couple of days later on same level.

I'd like to say the minimum level to enter (at the very least armory and library) is 20. I took my shaman in just tonight to check. Incase anyone wanted to know :) also incase u didnt already know, to get into the cathedral and the armory u must go thru the library and open the box in the final boss' room. If you dont believe me i can submit a screen shot of my lvl 21 sham with a crusade tabard on her. (she leveled while i was running it).

Very bad idea to try and solo this, even to farm sections of it, at less than lvl 50, if then. Many group mobs which will not pull apart, and scattered in groups all over the complex. Lvl46 healadin, died in the first hallway in both the library and the graveyard.

Wait to do it with a group, much, much more fun.

i agree with you. There is a difference between being social and interacting with other, compared to being required or forced to work with other. I have met alot of people in the 3+ years i have been playing and half of them are on my ignore list. I am proud to be a level 70 never guilded and i never understood how a group of 20-40 poeple can get better gear from places then a soloer can get alone. It takes alot more work and skill to do things on your own then having some high level friend "run" you places, thats just being lazy. Everything i have, i got on my own, something im betting about 90% of players cant say. As far as the mmo part of the game, i dont mind talking to or helping others out when i can but to to say im not deserving of the btter things becouse im a soloer is just wrong.

The game is designed to be social. So that you interact with other players, and while you can solo all the way up, it's hard for a reason. You are supposed to meet people, hence the friends list, or guilds, raids, etc... If that's too hard to do then yes, WoW isn't your game.

Haven't gotten to the Armory or the Cathedral yet, but have done the library twice and the graveyard 4-5 times at this point.

Armory group was likely the most interesting, though.

The only people that stuck through the whole thing were me (a 33 rogue) and a 35 lock. The easiest part of this was using the rogue to sap one target, then having the lock and the eventual hunter's pets take another target and then having a third target pulled by the hunter. Worked out most of the time, until we finally wiped later on in the instance and had to get everyone to fight through all over again. Not to mention when my dagger broke. :( That wasn't too fun.

The graveyard was definitely fun, though. Went in tonight with a 31 lock (myself), a 32-33 lock (they leveled mid-instance), a 46 druid, a 36 pally and a 34 hunter. We got through the instance in probably about 30-45 minutes, surprisingly. And one mageweave cloth drop throughout was pretty nice, too. :D

What's be best way to go there for alliance? I've read in old posts a reference to an Inn; is this the SouthShore Inn? Is this a shortcut? Or do I have to run through Alterac and then through Trisfal Glades and pay attention to the horde gards? That's a long road. The other shorter way would be through Western Plaguelands but it's a higher lvl place and the chance to get killed is much higher.

Thanks

I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but alliance usually goes from southshore and runs along the road or runs N, swims across the water NW, then gets back on the road.
At levels 40+, with your mount, you can go to WPL and try the run, hoping not to get killed by all the monsters above level 50... but this is my favorite route because it gets kind of scary :D

Just duo'ed the cathederal with Lvl44 Warrior(me) and a lvl 42 Paladin.

So long as you pull intelligently and focus on one enemy at a time, there is no reason to have to fight more than 3 mobs at a time anywhere in the instance. Just make sure any runners are stunned/slowed/killed before they can draw a link.
We did die once on the last bosses when a patroling chaplain popped and joined in, but after we had died, returned, and taken out the offending mob the bosses fell quite easily. I tanked both bosses and we both attacked the dude first, despite the woman healing him, because he does WAY more damage than her, and she ran out of mana after she had healed him twice + cast a few offensives. As soon as the bloke died, the woman was meat.

One tip: You can bandage yourself pretty nice immediately after you wake up if you killed the dude far away from the altar, and then fought the woman where she runs from, coz she has to run to his corpse when she res's him. Your gonna need that mp...

Another tip: if you are duoing you just need a good tank and healer. Just make sure your healer watches their MP for the last fight.

Last tip: You can run thru the fountain and get minimal aggro if you are over 40. We got to the cath having only killed about 9 mobs.

Really last tip: Be extra carful when first pulling mobs out of the cathederal pull them at least past the bottom of the stairs, coz if one runner goes in, easily 5 or 6 could come out.

So, I've been farming SM for about a week. I really want The Butcher and I'm stubborn so . . . here I will stay to rot b/c that flith flarnin' elusive bugger Won't Drop. =p This is to the benefit of others, hopefully, though.

Chests

If you're wanting to make quick runs for guaranteed greens, and aren't looking for anything in particular, there are 5 static chests. 2 in the GY, 1 in the Armory and 2 in the Library. No chests in the Cathedral.

Chest loots:
  • Locked: out of 32 chests, 4-6 silver per chest: 10 greys, 90 whites (herbs, food, sweet nectar, cloth, leather, potions), 38 greens, 1 blue, 0 purples
  • Unlocked: out of 43 chests, 4-6 silver per chest: 4 greys, 135 whites (same variety as locked), 57 greems, 4 blues, 0 purples

Named / Bosses

Generally BOP, although the Interrogator has been kind enough to drop several greens and even a blue for me; however, this took repeated killings.

Rares

Again, generally BOP, but other items are in their loot table. If you're looking to do a quick ML to a lower level toon, or just want to whack the rares for the lower level they are in the GY only. Ironspine, Ashzir the Sleepless and Fallen Champion. I have found four spawn points for them myself.

  • One in the mausoleum at the bottom of the 2nd set of stairs (if you're lower level and are going to pull the rare, make sure to check around the corners for the wanderers or other mobs which may be within aggro proximity).
  • One pretty much dead center south of the GY (to the right of the, hm, hut?, in the south)
  • One in the SW corner of the GY
  • One in the north just to the west of the hut-thing

Any of the rares can spawn in any of those areas. There should be two other spawn points from what I've read, but I haven't had spawns in those areas yet. If they aren't up the first run through and you're going to do the other sections of SM as well, go ahead and kill the place holders, run the other sections and come back, there will be respawns and one may be the rare. The other way is to reset the zone. Respawn for me took 17 min 44 seconds when I used CT's timer mod.

Herbs

  • Graveyard - three spawns per reset, I have also verified that the herbs do respawn. The spawns can be any combination of Kingsblood and Grave Moss. I've had 3 of GM and 3 of KB and anything in between.
  • Armory - in the courtyard is one spawn of Fadeleaf, that's it for the Armory.
  • Library - like the Armory, there is a Fadeleaf spawn in the courtyard, there is also a Liferoot spawn by the Houndmaster, you'll have to kill him and his pooches to get it, though.
  • Cathedral - Liferoot can spawn in the fountain and Goldthorn spawns in the grassy areas. I have not spent enough time in there to determine whether the Liferoot is a static spawn or if it is similar to the GY and can be any combination with a limit of 3 maximum node spawns. There have always been at least 2 Goldthorn spawns for me, though.

Cloth

Silk is the dominant cloth in this zone. Wool can be had, but less frequently. Mageweave can also be had; however, rarely. If I had to venture a guess at the rates I'd say 90% silk, 9% wool and 1% mageweave. Mobs drop between 1 and 4 pieces of silk, I haven't paid attention to wool or mageweave due to the rarity and I lack a need for either. A sampling: GY completely cleared yielded 3 stacks of silk, 5 pieces of wool and 1 piece of mageweave so pretty close to my percentages guess.

Mobs - Least difficult to most difficult

  • Graveyard - 15 humanoid, including the Interrogator, one wanderer, the rest are static. Torturers, Scryers and Sentries. First chest is near four mobs which can be any combination of torturers (strictly melee) or scryers (shadow casters). Upon entering the courtyard it's all undead. Anguished Dead, Unfettered Spirits, Haunting Phantasm (summons Illusionary Phantasm which can be killed with very little damage so it's a good idea to whack the Illusionaries right away because they do normal damage). The second chest will either be on the north or east "platforms" or it will be in the mausoleum, down the first three flights of stairs and then in either the east or west room. Unfettered spirits are normal mobs, can be either singles or groups of three. If running a lowbie through the instance, the lowbie could kill these normal mobs while the higher level takes care of the elites, dependent upon the gearing and level of the lowbie, of course. Unfettereds are in the low 30s. Three Rares: Ironspine, Fallen Champion and Ashzir the Sleepless. For Rogues with Blade Flurry - Rogue AE: Items used: Crystal Spire, Thornling Seed: pop spire, Sprint pull Unfettereds, pop Blade Flurry, toss Thornling Seed. Depending on gear you might want to pop Evasion. =p Level 30s alone don't hurt, in small swarms they're a nuisance but in groups of 16+ they Can hurt (think about it, 30 dmg hits single - 300 dmg hits per 10 mobs, big difference, not to mention you Will get an elite or two in there unless you're very careful on the pull). I have Blade Flurry and Prep so I'll pull about 5-6 sets and have them down quickly leaving me with about 2k hp to spare, depending on how many elites I got in the mix. I do hit the elites first, too. (No poo about my spec, it's what works for me =p)

  • Library - This is where you get the Scarlet Key to open the Cathedral and Armory doors. Gallants (melee), Adepts (casters), Diviners (casters), Beastmasters (hunters would be my bet =p), Monks and Chaplains. Mid 30s mobs, even the pooches are elite. 4-5 silver per humanoid avg. Hallways are congested so it's tough to get through w/o fighting if you're unable to stealth or blink. Invis pots would work, but the time it would take for the cooldown it would be quicker to kill and hope for some nice drops. 1 static spawn of Fadeleaf in the courtyard, 1 static spawn of Liferoot in the Houndmaster's area, he will have to be disposed of to get the node. Chests - static in the first room you come upon after leaving the courtyard. You'll go down the hallway and end up with two choices, left or right. Left is your chest. Three mobs there with a wanderer. The second chest can be in the 4th or 5th hallway, it hasn't spawned anywhere else for me. There are 6 hallways total I am referring to. If you look at Atlas, or the map on Alla's, http://wow.allakhazam.com/images/zones/ScarletMonistaryLibrary.jpg you'll see, from the west to the east, 1 hallway, cy, 2nd hallway, red carpetted hallway, grey hallway, red carpetted hallway, grey red carpetted hallway. Hopefully that makes sense. Basically, the second chest spawns in either of the two grey sections.

  • Armory - All humanoid mid to high 30s, save for Fire Elementals: Soldiers, Conjurors and their Fire Elemental pets, Evokers, Protectors, Guardsmen, Defenders and Myrmidons. That's pretty much the order you'll come across the mobs in. 1 static node of Fadeleaf in the courtyard. Chest has two spawn points: courtyard or to the right of the first set of stairs. There are rockets (firecrackers) at the south end of the 2nd to last hallway to Herod's room, next to 2 mobs but don't forget the wanderer. Weapon and armor crates can also be found housing a grey something or other. Not really worth clearing the mobs for.

  • Cathedral - All humanoid, high 30s: Defenders, Myrmidons, Sorcerers, Wizards, Centurions in the courtyard. 2 static Goldthorn spawns, 1 Liferoot all in the upper and lower courtyards. Beyond the Chapel doors: EVERYTHING must die beyond these doors if you are going to kill Mograine. Anything left alive beyond those doors will assist him. It's bad enough he gets help from Whitemane. =p Beyond these doors the mobs are in the mid 30s capping at level 40 (aside from Mograine and Whitemane). You've got Champions, Monks, Abbots, Centurions, Wizards and Chaplains. There are no chests, but there is a "secret" named. In the room in the NE corner of the Chapel is a lone mob, to the left of that mob is a torch. Kill mob, click torch, voila! Super Top Sekwet room. Enter to find a very much undead (I know, I said everything was humanoid, but I'm not even getting paid for this guide so pshaw!) High Inquisitor Fairbanks. He will not attack until provoked. He's level 40 and he's uuuuugly. Green drops only, decent caster shoulders, so-so leather bracers and "meh" mail boots, all BOP. That's it, Mograin and Whitemane are all that's left of this zone.

Since this is a farming guide I did not touch on very many of the bosses since they drop mainly BOP items. I also skip most detail about the Armory and Cathedral because I haven't farmed the mobs, only the herbs and chests thus far. I'm twinking my baby rogue (lvl 27) through SM so the GY is my farm spot atm. Wait, a rogue with a rogue alt?! WTF?! What can I say, I enjoy the class. =p Besides that, I need a miner / skinner and I already know the rogue class and have helped several friends level their own rogues so it was the logical choice, I can zip through the levels quickly. =D Seriously, though, if twinking or catering to the high 20s to low 30s, SM is a great zone. Greens drop like candy, cloth is free flowing for that first aid and other tradeskills, and there's no competition for mobs so you can farm in peace.

Wished they had more places like this.

Much better than the advertisement (and more accurate). Scarlet Monastery is tough because the mobs run and pull adds easily. That is the biggest threat for wiping.

Poor post about SM

Library:
1.) 3 hounds + houndmaster, 4 man fight.
2.) Can only sap humanoids, houndmaster is immune.
3.) Druid can't snare inside of caves/buildings.
4.) Mages don't use totems.

Armory:
1.) Back off Herod when he shouts "blades of light" and spins in circles.

Cathedral:
1.) Kill Morgaine (the guy) then let his wife res him. DO NOT WASTE MANA ON ATTACKING HER. Let the warriors, feral druids, and rogues attack her. She will deep sleep everyone, run over to him, res him, then heal to full. Your main tank works best at level 39 or higher, they are both level 42+

Thanks for forgetting graveyard, which has awesome drops for leatherwearers... and how is this a gold grind guide? ;)

Graveyard is 32+, Library is 34+, Armory is 36+, Cathedral is 38+. Priests can do these 1-2 levels below that. Graveyard isn't popular due to lack of quests (but, if there is a group forming for it, is well worth it).

He probably meant kill mograine, then her first and last mograine again. since:

You must kill Mograine for her to come forth.
Then she sleeps every1 (can't be resisted) and resses mograine. (You cant kill her before she does this so no difference)

When she resses mograine, you better kill her first, since she heals mograine otherwise, making it a harder fight.

Did the instance last night with the following party:
43 Druid
41 Paladin
39 Rogue
39 Druid
37 Warlock (me)

I was 36 at beggining of instance and was pulling aggro from quite a distance but there was no problem.

We flew by Library, and Armoury, and only got a bit hard in the Chapel.

There the enemys are 39-40 Elites and thankfully I was 37 by the time or they would resist alot.
The most important part is NOT LET THE WOUNDED GO AND GET FRIENDS or things can get ugly realy fast.

Pulls are 2-3's unless you got with you a Mage/Rogue and you poly/sap like hell an makes tha game easier cause the enelys fall realy fast.

I found very usefull casting curse of tougns to spellcasters and although that pisses them off and you draw aggro make you life much easier.

2 q's here [40] In the name of light and [38]Mythology of the titans.

First 1 stats from the basement of the cathedral in SW and you are send to find brother Anton in Desolace, at Nijes point ( or something like that ), that area is when you enter Desolace from the North turn left and keep walking til you find a small path on your left hand side, there is also a FP there, get it.

Anton will send you to kill 30 undead, they are located in the bottom of the map to your left hand side ( as you are going down from the North ), they are 38 lvl so not too hard, ( I soled them with the VW as help quite easily ).
After that get back to him and he will give you a letter to five it to a dude ( soz cant remember his name ) in Southsore, this dude can be found upstairs in the Inn in the middle of the 3 rooms, he will give you the q to kill 4 guys in SM and give you the reward.

The 2nd q its just picked up from IF in the explorers hall from a guy and just wants you to retrieve for him a book "The mythology of the Titans", this book can be found in the Library instance and keep an eye for it cause its not all teh time on the same place, I found it in one of the benches full of books. You can interact with it and take it.

Thats it for the 2 q's and all I can sy is that the instance had GREAT drops for cloth users.

Dont know if you can solo the place with 2 40's I wouldnt think so maybe the library, not the rest. Especialy becauase or the multiple pulls in some places, and the fact they every one of them runs to get company.

Some very good drops in this instance.

The scarlet key drops from the instance on the right (the one you can just walk through, without having to open a door).

I completed Scarlet Monastery (all instances) very easily at lvl42, was partied with two lvl 44 guys and two lvl 38 guys.

One little secret you might not know about, at the end of the Catherdral instance, if you go to the right corridor in the monastery bit itself and go into the room there, there is a torch which can be interacted with. This leads to an undead elite, nothing too difficult and he dropped 3 decent green items.

There are actually 4 instances to this zone. From left to right (clockwise): Graveyard, Cathedral, Armory, Library. Cathedral and Armory are locked (as are rooms inside of them, so don't enter the instance unless someone in your party has the scarlet key). Graveyard has a boss down in the tomb at the end of it. I think he dropped a blue item for us. We then did Library. This instance has 2 bosses: Doan and the Houndmaster. Doan has a box with key to the other two instances. Doan is at the end fo the instance. Houndmaster is in a room attached to the big room with all the hounds. I think both of these guys commonly drop a blue item. Armory has a boss at the end of it. Kill him, get a blue item. Be prepared for a bunch of level 30 guys to come running in once you kill him. Cathedral has 3 bosses. Fight in to the church, then clear everyone in there. On the right side, there's a torch or lever thing you pull to go into another room. Kill the undead guy in there for 3 green drops. Kill the other two bosses for a blue drop from each. One will rez the other (once) during the fight. Be prepared. Tank, Heal, dps, etc. Nothing too hard about this zone if you keep almost dead guys from running and bringing their friends back to help them. Lots of fun.

I recommend a very good read here:

http://www.koaworld.com/html/wow/locations.php?l=Scarlet_Monastery

To summarize, there are 3 zones to this place. From easiest to hardest; Library, Armory, Cathedral. They are each its own instance, so you can pick whichever one you want to do. They're not amazingly long, like Deadmines was the first time you did it, but they're not easy either. A couple of smart Lv40s could definitely make it to Doan in the Library... provided you have some sort of crowd control like Sap or Poly. But I don't recommend taking on Doan at 40 with only 2 people. He has some nasty moves and he's a 37 elite, meant for a group of 35s, not only 2 40s... although you can resist his nova at higher levels, I heard.

Armory and Cathedral are considerably harder, but the loot is a lot nicer, tho you cannot duo those 2 instances.

1 question, anyone else notice the lack of chests in cathedral, ive yet to see 1?
