Tanaris is a barren desert area located in Kalimdor, to the east of Un'Goro Crater. It is a dry, arid area, completely covered with sand dunes. The Steamwheedle Cartel has made this area its main base of operations. They have the town of Gadgetzan and a port, called Steamwheedle Port.

Getting Here

There are many ways to get to this zone, such as the portals in Dalaran (inside the Violet Citadel) and Shattrath (go to the World's End Tavern and talk to Zephyr). These two in particular will take you to the entry of the Caverns of Time.

Alliance Starting in Thalanaar, head east through Thousand Needles then move south through the Shimmering Flats. There is a mountain pass to the south of the flats to get to Gadgetzan.

Horde From Freewind Post in Thousand Needles, travel east to the Shimmering Flats then head south through the mountains to Gadgetzan.

Watch out for Horde campers at the lift.

If you're alliance and use the lift, be careful of horde players camping the guards there, waiting for Alliance players to use the lift. Once you hit the guards at the top of the lift, you are flagged for PVP. Best strategy if you do get attacked by Horde players and know you're going to die is jump. Once at the bottom, its much easier to get your body and be on your way again. If you're going to die, it may as well be where you are not going to have to tangle with the guards again when you rez.

If you make it, head West toward Feralas and right on the border is an alliance Hippogryph Trainer to save you having to mess with the lift guards again. There are a lot of alliance quests that take you to Thousand Needles and beyond so it's nice to be able to use this FM instead of facing a long run from Ratchet.

On a pvp server prepared to get ganked a lot. 70s love to spend their time killing everyone, even in the "safety" of Gadgetzan. Other than that, there are a lot of good quests and grinding is actually kind of fun. The southwestern part of the map will be most miner's first time seeing thorium, and a trip around the outside of the zone will also net lots of iron, and some mithril. The zone is also a skinner's dream since there are so many scorps, basilisks, and hyenas.

I was mindind my own buiness, completing the Cuegro Gold quest, when I saw an island further south (south of Land's End Beach). I swam and swam and died of fatigue lessthan 40 yards from safe waters. I rezed and pushed for that last 40 yards and made it to an island. It has 43-45lvl pirates and lashers, plus a couple of structures. Does anyone know why that island is there?

I know what island you're talking about. I've seen it when doing the Cuergo's Gold quest too and was always tempted to try and swim out to it, but it seemed kinda distant. Surprised that there's mobs on it, let alone low level 40's. Did it give you experience for "discovering" it?

So, you've quested and leveled in the Thousand Needles, The Barrens, maybe Durotar, Desolace, and Probably the Badlands. So you're sick of deserts, right?

You're in luck! Tanaris is a desert you'll love.

easy quests, great grinding spots. The only thing you have to worry about is travling in the middle of Tanaris, because mobs are much closer.

and just so you know, there is only one graveyard. You die on one side of tanaris, you end up on the other. :)

This zone is for low level 40's. It's pretty good if you hunt the pirates on the east side of the zone. They can xp you up to the high 40's.

Ok from a dwarven perspective this place is a long walk for you first timers looking for this place.... Here is how you find it... First thing,,, for quick referance its handy to have that book the game came with with a few maps on it...( i had to use this cause it had better info then what i could find on the net...next head over to mentil harbor and board the boat headed for theramore... if need to be ask some of the crew on the docs and they will tell you if you are at the right dock for the boat to theramore... next.. once you arrive in theramore head next to badlands area....from badlands... you will wantto head south twards the thousand needles zone.... once here its pretty much home free... follow this zone wall south and a little to yer right 9 looking at yer in game screen map)... you will come upon a place called frozen isle ( OR SOMETHING SPELLED LIKE THAT) keep folloing this and to south and you will then enter into tanaris... from here you can see gadzatan... just folllow the main road and sighns and you will be ther in no time.. also while you are here... talk to the gripon mastrer... will make returning to this place alot easier next time.. hope this helps all those looking for this place.. be safe and enjoy.

I agree with Demoneer the first time I ever got to Tanaris I swam down the coast from Theramore isle. From there it's quite safe even for low levels to follow the road from Steamwheedle to Gadgetzan provided you don't irriatate the turtles as you get out of the water.

It's very easy to get past Thousand Needles. The first time i visited the Great Lift, I was a lvl 36 mage. I 2-shotted one of the guards and 3-shotted the other. XD To get to the Shimmering Sands, just follow the road. When you reach the Horde encampment, go further south to avoid it, and then go back north back on the road. Soon, you'll reach the Shimmering Sands and then the race track and then Tanaris.

Better yet, just swim south from Theramore until you get to Steamwheedle Port. Becareful not to swim out to far from shore due to fatigue and there are some big aggro monster in Theramore bay. Other than that, it is a straight 10 min swim and much easier then weaving the monster ridden paths on land. And if you are Alliance, then its an extra juicy stratgey.

The only place you have to worry about Horde is at the top of the Great Lift when you first enter from Badlands. If you are a mage, you can just slow fall down the cliff - otherwise, you kill the two guards. The are level 30-ish, non-epic, and it will flag you, but I never had any trouble because of it. If you stay on ground level, you will avoid the rest of the Horde NPCs.

For Horde, run south thru the Barrens, through Thousand Needles and the shimmering flats. There's a pass in the mountains in Shimmering Flats that leads you right to Gadgetzan. There is a Horde flight path there.

For Alliance, same thing, get thee to the Barrens either by taking the boat from Menethil Harobr to Theramore then running thru the Dustwallow Marsh or going to Ashenvale and running a LOOOOOONG way south to the Barrens.
