ThumbnailThumbnail

Desolace is a horrid, rocky wasteland littered with bones with an eternal overcast of black and stormy skies. Lightning and high winds blow constantly in the region, making camping and basic survival difficult at best. To make matters worse, what water exists in the area is comprised of pools of yellow, polluted sludge all over the landscape.

In Desolace, skulls of ancient kodo, husks of long-dead trees and gray ash are the only twisted remains of a once lush area. In addition, many stone ruins attest to the past glories of the falled Highborne. Uprooted and devastated by the Great Sundering, the legacy of the cataclysm is that these ruins are now inhabited now by all manner of foul creatures.

The name for this zone is absolutely fitting. It is a seemingly endless sea of brown dirt and yellow pools of water. The only highlights are a few scattered Highborne ruins and the more or less attractive Horde/Alliance towns and the coastline, which at least have some green. There's not many quests here and the ones that are require you to travel back and forth over the bleak landscape repeatedly. It feels much like a bike courier's job except bike couriers don't get to kill wild hostile animals (that I know of). The Alliance FP is at a little cozy nook in northern Desolace called Nijel's Point. The Horde equivalent is further down south and on the coast, close to the Gelkis clan and Maraudon. I suspect the developers had run out of ideas of what kind of zone to put together to fill in the little spot where Desolace is, and this is the end result. The zone is made for 35-40+ but can be very dangerous to travel in. Sea Giants roam the landscape from time to time and they will kill the unwary traveler very quickly, so keep your eyes peeled.

A few points of interest though...

- Maraudon instance is located in the zone. There are several quests available for it so poke around and try and nab as many as you can before going in because you're going to be in there a long time. Big freakin' instance.

- There are four clans of Centaurs in the zone and you're allowed to ally with two of the four (albeit only one at a time). I find it's probably better to ally with the Gelkis because they guard the northern approach to Feralas and that means less agro on your way there, but it's entirely up to you.

- With a little patience one can nab a Big Iron Fishing Pole off of the shoreline of Shadowspray Village (sp?).

- There's a handful of Goblin quests to do which will net you some Steamwheedle Cartel faction, albeit a negligible amount.

- If you're into skinning this place is better than the Barrens for raw materials. There's loads of animals to whack and skin and you'll be getting leather hand over fist. For miners ores range from Copper to Tin and Iron to Mithril. There is some Silver and Truesilver to be found from time to time but I've never found more than a node or two.

Storywise the zone lacks terribly (if that's your thing...it's mine), and is a terrible eyesore to boot, so most people skip the zone entirely unless they're wanting to finish Maraudon for their Achievement. There's not many quests to do here if you're working on Loremaster - Kalimdor, but with that Achievement you get em' where you can take em'. I had the option of doing the Magram Centaur quests but after 12 hours I already never want to see this zone again. If I can't get Loremaster for the rest of the continent then I'll come back, and only then. I never thought I'd be happy to see Ferelas!

As stated the name fits it because nobody is there. There are a lot of iron nodes though, and some mithril and trusilver around the Mannoroc Coven. There are also ton of things to skin. Overall, you won't spend a lot of time here because there aren't a lot of quests, and you level fast on the ones there are(due to the sheer number of Centaurs you need to kill to raise your rep).
Desolate!

Totally fitting name for this place... hardly anybody comes to this zone... so if after Ashenvale/Duskwood (if on PvP server) come to this zone instead of Hillsbrad Gankhills or STV if you don't want to be ganked a few hundred times in those zones! Gets abit boring by level 37-39... but i stayed here until i had riding skill before moving to a new zone

Yes, it's true there's no FP at Ghost Walker Post for horde, but there is one at Shadowprey Village on the Southeastern edge of the coast. I would suggest to anyone at least horde...not sure about alliance yet....that they not skip this zone. There's some pretty decent rewards out here for quests.

Also, a small correction to the centaur question. It's not the Gelkis and Kolkar you can gain rep with...it's the Magram and Gelkis. The Kolkar are another clan entirely, and hate everyone.

IMO Desolace is a dump for the horde. The good thing is you can give the place a miss till you need the rep or are bored. There is no flight master in Ghost Walker Pass and it is pretty rare to see anyone around the place. From what I read the quests are not worth it (30-40 lvl) and it is miles from anywhere!
Best thing to do is quest/grind Thousand Needles andd/or Hillsbrad and then go straight to STV. Also the scenery is depressing and looks like it was done on a Friday afternoon before the holidays :)

Again, flight path at 21:74.

That is probably the best description I've ever read of the place.

A side note, yea the quests pretty much suck. I've only gone to Desolace if there was a quest from someplace else that required it.

Eh if you're bored though, it's the mobs aren't so bad for grinding.

From Astranaar in Ashenvale, head southeast to the 'Mystral Lake', but stay on the west side of that lake and you will see a path along the mountains. There is a cave here called the 'Talondeep Path'. After you emerge you will be in Stonetalon Mts at a place called 'Windshear Craig'. Go Southwest until you come to a main north/south road. Follow that north until you come to Mirkfallon Lake. Go west through the Mountain Pass, the pass will eventually curve back south and you will be in the Charred Vale. Straight south will come to the end of Stonetalon and into Desolace.

Make sure you head eastward after you clear the main chain of mountains upon entering Desolace and north up the lighted guarded path to Nigels Point for the Flight Path.

These directions are dead on, but if you already have Stonetalon flight path, fly there instead of Ashenvale. I went way out of my way to go again through Talondeep Path. Hop, skip and a jump from where the gryph drops you in North Stonetalon, as opposed to a hop, skip, hop, hop, jump, skip, hop, jump, skip and a hop if you're going for fist time from Astranaar.
