also do some talents affect the bonus you receive from +dmg for more precise calculations of what +dmg does to your spells i suggest to Download TheoryCraft (link below)
this addon also allows you to calculate what 1%crit/hit/10agi/10str/10spellpenentration does to your estimated DPS
it also has a function to Compare gear, by pretending you have the item equiped, the 1.07 version will allow you to add enchantments to the chosen items
The Theorycraft Addon displays the calculated damage a spell would do, i often hit 2-3 damage higher then listed(wich must come from percentages rounded down somewhere) in adition it shows the +damage efficiency
With 616 spelldamage gear (without Curse of Shadows active) the total damage of it is +/- 1835 wich results in it ticking for 367

The tooltip shows this (again by using Theorycraft) and since it also displays the damage range, wich infact is very acurate (i tend to hit for 2-3 higher then the max shown on the tooltip @ times, but that must be becouse the percentages where rounded down somewhere)
Pre 1.11 Blizzard also stated that they wanted to make AM (Arcane Missiles) a more viable damage spell, and that each wave was capable of triggering on spellhit effects, wich (especially for aliance) made the spell more usefull.
Due to the high mana cost and low dps it currently is an alternative spell to cast on clearcast for me, gotta love a mana free 5 wave spell triggering Judgement of Wisdom (chance to refund 59 mana on a spellhit on the target) a couple of times
Rank 8 Launches Arcane Missiles at the enemy, causing 230 Arcane damage each second for 5 seconds.
wich is (without damage gear) a total of 1100 damage
