but if your an RP player then the speach you get from highlord bolvar makes it all worth while.

You people that are saying that this is a bad item are just retarted. Whats wrong, do you keep forgetting that +int increases your chance to crit, and lessens the chance you spell is resisted? +spell dmg + more int > +2% chance to hit

Talon of Furious Concentration is better IMO. +21 dmg and +1% crit. For a mage who is kitted in full netherwind, the 1% crit is equal to 10 dmg or more making the talon actually have higher dps than the orb. And the talon can be gotten from a simple boss in aq20. The Orb should at least have had one +1% crit addet to it considering the effort to get it.

All of the people who say this item sucks makes me lose faith in humanity. If you have gotten to nefarion in BWL i would hope you would know better than to judge things just by +damage. The claw and this offers more versatilty than the staff of the shadow flame. You could swap in a FR offhand with the claw for FR fights, or in my case i could swap in an SR offhand for tanking twin emps.

6 Damage is not>2 stam and 14 int.

10 damage 3 int, 6 stam>1 hit.

At around 500+damage, 1crit=~10 damage.

This IS an amazing offhand.

You dont understand the value of "2% chance to crit". Take your average spell damage and assume you'll get 2% of that in addition on each spell you cast(with crit enhancement talents like Ice Shards(+100%) or Ignite(110%) you get a large bonus on crits). As a mage I do about 1200 damage per non-crit fireball.

So... 2% of 1200 = 24. That makes the Staff of the Shadowflame worth 84+24 = 108. The Claw of Chromaggus + Dragonslayer Orb is only 92 damage.

The SotSF still wins on damage.

The caster item from Onyxia has crit chance, primarily for DPS casters, and this one isn't all that great for any kind of caster. I wonder why a healer option is left out? This would be great if it was only +heals -- that way it could have a higher value like +40 and actually be useful. Even +damage would be a better alternative.

Uhhh ya
If you think that +crit% is better than +dmg for a caster then you should learn to play.

This is one of the best off-hand available for DPS casters.

And there is no item that is strictly +dmg with no +heal unless it designated for 1 school of magic.
Thats why if you look at the mage and warlock set pieces you will see +dmg&healing, even though they obviously don't heal.

Actually, we do heal. It is however, Health Funnel, which is channeled, and I'm not quite sure if +healing gear come into play there.

fire runed grimoire only adds +11 to dmg and healing but the other stats are right, add that with an azuresong mageblade with spellpower enchant and thats some pretty cool dmg, beats most staffs tahts for sure

This is the crappiest thing I've ever seen in my entire life especially since it's item value is 83 on Thottbot. I don't really care about tiny +18 dmg. It's miniscule even if I bolt something on a boss in BWL I'll do maximum total 300 dmg big whoop. I'd rather have the int to pull off an extra 2-3 shadowbolts.

Im a bit dissapointed by this, casters with a staff dont have any use for this at all. And if you compare it to fire runed grimoire (Wich is ALOT easier to get)

Fire runed grimoire:
+12 stamina
+21 intellect
+21 magic damage

This offhand item only has 7 more magic damage, while it has 7 less intellect and 2 less stamina. Im not saying this offhand is bad, but compared to an MC epic wich can drop of the 2nd boss in molten core it just isnt that good.

If the FRG had the stats you quote, your argument would be a bit better.

It's actually:
+12 stamina (2 more)
+21 intellect (7 more)
+11 damage/healing (17 less)

And personally, 17 points of spelldamage outranks 9 points of stats. :)

It IS better than the AV offhands as they only provide spelldamage for 1 school of magic. And the one with the most +spell damage (wich is the fire one) only has 12 more and no stats all. And if you would compare it to the one with +33 spell damage then you would sacrifice 14 intellect and 10 stamina for 5 magic damage (wich isnt smart IMO)

I read all your comments. But am I wrong when I say that this is a piece that is held i MAIN HAND. It does say Held in Hand, not Held in Off hand.
If it is, it´s pretty decent drop I would say. ( and no, not all casters use 2h all the time )-zen

Pls ppl this thing kicks ass. The one that drops of the hexxer has fewer stats and less damage. It does have the 1% chance to hit which increases your overall damage by about 1%. For my current set up that comes to about 8 extra damage per bolt. In all I would say this is slightly better than the hexxer one, but so what. The hexxer offhand is awesome too. If your one of those mages/locks that actually thinks int > damage, spend your DKP on the MC offhand. Its your loss.

Holy crap, do you really think DPS ****ing matters when your spell was resisted? I hate DPS whores who turn things such as +crit and +hit into DPS terms.

Spell missed. Where is your DPS now? Oh wait, I wasted it on a few amounts of +spell dmg.

Because all casters use 2-handers. I don't like spell crit. Do I whine about the onyxia head turnin? No, I just don't try to get her head.

This, on the other hand, is especially useful for anyone who just so happened to get the claw of chromaggus or Lok'amir il Romathis (the +84 spell damage mace) and is looking to swap out a staff.

Also, if you haven't noticed by now, There are no real rewards for killing anything in this game. The rewards come from killing consistantly.

HUNTER WEAPON!?!?!?!?!?!??!? Oh I forgot you need that extra healing buff for your multitude of healing spells... This is a caster orb without doubt. We need Int. for the obvious reasons, and we sure as hell need stamina as if a 60 mob so much as breathes on us we are back to the graveyard faster than you can say Murloc...

And anyway, you can DUAL WIELD so with the option of this or another weapon in your other hand??
