Here's the run down (credits to Auenwing)

1. Go to Hinterlands and kill Qiaga the Keeper at Altar of Zul for the Sacred Mallet. She was 50 ish and pretty easy.

2. Go to Jintha'Alor (also in Hinterlands) and climb to the top. Follow the paved trail and take any stairs up that you find. Once you hit the top floor go to the left and follow the trail to the amphitheatre. There is an altar there with a quest guy flopped on it. You don't even have to kill the named priestess that is in the ampitheatre because she paths inside a cave there... So just wait for her to leave and run up to the alter and right click your Sacred Mallet, and you will receive the Mallet of Zul'Farrak.

3. Go to the Shimmering Flats and find Wizzle Brassbolts (Wizzle, not Rizzle) at 78,77. He will give you the quest for Zul'Farrak instance (in Tanaris) and Gahz'rilla.

4. Go to Zul'Farrak instance. Hang nothing but lefts until you reach a large open area with a big swimming pool in the middle and a gong at one end of it. You right click this gong and your hammer will smack it and summon Gahz'rilla. He was 46 ish for us and wasn't terribly hard. He does knockback, so clear as much of the room as you can for safety reasons. Loot Gahz'rilla's Electrified Scale off of him and return to Wizzle Brassbolts.

Once you get your carrot bank your completed hammer. Anytime somebody wants to do the quest in the future, it should be possible to have them just get the quest from Wizzle and go to ZF with them. Spawn the named, kill, and let them return to Wizzle. Only one person in each group needs the hammer and everybody can receive Gahz'rilla's Electrified Scale.

I solo'd this at level 66 just to see if it could work with another trinket and it was cake. So if you are higher levels, stuff won't even attack you.

Um... I really feel bad that I even have to explain this to you, but you CAN switch your trinkets out any time you want to, so long as you aren't in combat. In other words, you put the Carrot on a Stick on whenever you're riding, then you switch to a combat-oriented trinket when you dismount. Going faster means getting to your destination faster, which means less riding time and more playing time. Why would you NOT want to use this trinket?

I finally hit level 69 and started using the Riding Crop. I use MonkeySpeed to tell how fast I am going.

With my previous setup (carrot, riding skill gloves, and spurs) I was going 219% of normal running speed.

With the Riding Crop I now go 220%, so it only makes about 0.5% difference in speed.

Although it doesn't stack with the old riding gear and it's pretty expensive, I really like two advantages of switching to the riding crop.

1: If I get knocked off my mount by a mob, I'm only missing one trinket for the fight instead of having to also use junk riding gloves & boots as well (since my good ones are always equipped now).

2: I save a couple bag slots because I was able to get rid of my old riding gear.

I use Carrot on a Stick, mithril spurs, and riding skill enchant on gloves. I use the Monkey Speed addon to tell how fast I'm going, and it always reports a slower speed when I remove any one of the three items.

I can't wait to get a riding crop in a couple of levels. It does NOT stack with anything else, but it is a bit faster than the carrot, spurs, and glove enchant combined. I confirmed this by racing a friend who has the same speed mount as me, but he uses the riding crop. Slowly, but surely, he passed me.

Get this, enchant a pair of gloves with mount speed increase, and have a blacksmith fit a pair of boots with mithril spurs. Now, Using the CORRECT %'s from deathzstart's post (I swear, people have no common sense.), I will show you the increase in speed, as that is another argued topic...

Lessay, just for ease, that the running speed of a character is 100. Now, your mount increases your speed by 60%. 60% of 100, is 60. So now, adding together, you go 160. 60% more. 100% increase on an epic mount, meaning 100% of 100, added to 100. 200. You now go the speed 200.

Now you get that damn carrot.

Mount increase is 60%. Carrot makes it 63%. Simple. Epic mount is 100%. Carrot makes is 103%.

63% of 100 (still running speed), is 63. 63 added to 100 is 163. You now go 163. Epic increase is 103%. 103% of 100 is 103. 103 added to 100 is 203. You now go 203.

If you have all the increase gear (well, at least all the ones listed in deathzstart's post, lest there be more), you get a 15% increase. Mount increase is now 75%, as opposed to 60%, and the Epic mount is now a 115% increase. 75% of 100 is 75, and with is you will move at the speed, 175. 115% of 100 is 115. Ba-dum-chhh!! You should get it by now.

Don't argue anymore. Everything has been cleared up. Yep, in the last few posts. So stuffit and argue on who needs it more.

It's nice that you can add, but mount speed increase isn't an additive bonus, it's a multiplicitive bonus.

Formula is something like ( base runspeed * (1 + mount bonus) ) * ( 1 + sum of mount modifiers)

Get monkey speed or whatever your favorite movement spedometer is and test it for yourself. Regular mount speed with the carrot is 165, epic mount speed is 206.

Don't argue theoreticals, there's no point. Download a UI mod to measure these values and read the facts off your monitor.

multiplicatives is just dumb to even concider. its all addition...

a +3% mount speed increase means just that +3% to the already 60% or 100%

which is why the formula should be more like:
run speed + mountspeed + carrot = total speed
1 + .6 or 1 + .03 = 1.63

makes more sense that way. you may be confused a bit with your math lingo... about $50 at a local community college will fix that ;)

Question: Has anyone done any testing to see if this increases for epic mounts?

Regular Mount
(+60% Run Speed) x 3% = (160%) x 3% = 164.8%

Epic Mount
(+100% Run speed) x 3% = (200%) x 3% = 206%

So for an epic mount, it adds 6% increase versus a 4.8% increase. Insignificant, but mathematically, it should add in more for the epic mounts, since it's "+% to MOUNT speed", and not "+% to speed while mounted".

If you want to get mathematical about it, re-read the item. It ADDS 3%, its not a 3% multiplier.

Regular Mount
(+60% Run Speed) = 100% (normal) + 60% (mount) + 3% (trinket) = 163%

Epic Mount
(+100% Run speed) = 100% (normal) + 100% (mount) + 3% (trinket) = 203%

It says mount (not mounted) speed so its 3% of 60 for regular mount and 3% of 100 for epic.
So the carrot gives

epic mount = +3 for a total of 103 plus your speed 100 = 203.8

I just did extensive testing of this item on the same terrain (road in STV). I don't believe that the spurs and the carrot stack. I measured my speed using the gauge listed in the Clock addon (available in Cosmos or as a standalone addon from Telo).

Nothing equipped: 157.14% of run speed
Carrot only equipped: 171.43% of run speed
Boots with spurs only equipped: 171.43% of run speed
Boots with spurs and carrot equipped: 171.43% of run speed

So as you can see, it appears that while the carrot DOES increase mounted speed, it does not appear to stack with mithril spurs, which increase mount speed the same amount. Perhaps this is by design, and there is simply a cap on mounted (non-epic) speed. That is my conclusion, unless the speed increase is just not regisering with the addon.

It increased the speed of my mount. I always catch up to people when I auto follow when they don't have this equipped.

regardless if it's ground mounts that go 3% faster or not... Air Mounts are still slow as all hell. And Kalimdor flight paths for the Alliance is terrible! 3% isn't really the world of a difference in the air. You're still going to wait about 20mins from Point A to Point B.

Slow as all hell? They're about 400% of base speed, beats the pants off the run or ride times. :)
