Recap of ZAM's E3 Coverage

Members of the ZAM team were on the floor of the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center last week to bring you all sorts of information on your favorite MMOs. You can check out all of our coverage on our E3 news feed, but we've compiled all of our noteworthy features and news posts in this post for easy access. So keep reading below and after the jump for our in-depth E3 coverage, from the unveiling of Final Fantasy XIV Online to our impressions on Star Wars: The Old Republic!

ZAM E3 Features

All Points Bulletin E3 Impressions: Andrew "Tamat" Beegle gives us a first look at All Points Bulletin, Realtime Worlds' upcoming fast-paced third-person action MMOG. While he didn't see any live gameplay, he was highly impressed with the level of depth available in character creation, as well the number of car models and in-game MP3 player.

Star Wars: The Old Republic at E3: The ZAM team had the opportunity to enjoy a private gameplay demonstration of Star Wars: The Old Republic, and everyone was amazed by what they saw. Of course, the team wasn't allowed to record footage of any of the gameplay, but Tamat did get an exclusive interview with SW:TOR Lead Writer Daniel Erickson and Lead Designer James Olhen. Check out the video!

The Potential in Heroes of Telara: Trion World Networks unveiled its new fantasy MMO at E3, and Tamat gives us his first impressions on the game. While he says it's too early to tell if Heroes of Telara will deliver on its promises, he does emphasize it's a beautiful game with some new ideas and improvements to ideas that have potential.

E3 Gameplay Footage of The Agency: The ZAM team was able to get some video of a mission being played out in The Agency. Take a closer look at this espionage action game from Sony Online Entertainment.

'Chapter II — The Elven Prophecy' Announced at E3

Frogster made a big announcement for Runes of Magic fans at E3 today: "Chapter II — The Elven Prophecy" will launch in September. The new chapter will introduce elves as a playable race, add two new character classes, raise the level cap to 55, integrate a new pet system, and include a completely new soundtrack.

You actually don't have to wait until September to start enjoying the new content. In August, Frogster will begin integrating content packages from "The Elven Prophecy" into the game, which will add the new "Weeping Coast" region and raise the level cap to 52.

Since Runes of Magic is a free-to-play game, you'll be able to download Chapter II for free. Check out the new screenshots and trailer for "The Elven Prophecy" on the game's official Web site. More information can be found in the press release after the jump.

Patch 1.7 is Live, Adds High-Level Content

Patch 1.7, Return to the Ice Dwarf Kingdom, launched today in Runes of Magic. As we've previously mentioned, the update expands the potential of guild castles and and extend the "Ruins of the Ice Dwarf Kingdom" instance with more content for level 50 players.

Of course, bug fixes and changes to skills and items were implemented, as well. You can read the full patch notes below.

Patch 1.7 Will Add New Content on June 3

Frogster has announced that Patch 1.7, "Return of the Ice Dwarf Kingdom," will launch on June 3. The update will expand the potential of guild castles and and extend the "Ruins of the Ice Dwarf Kingdom" instance with more high-level content and new boss fights.

Once 1.7 goes live, guilds will be able to erect new buildings in their castle yard that will grant the guild special bonuses, such as enhanced riding speed. As you continue to add buildings, stronger contructions will become available. You can view screenshots of some of the buildings in our gallery.

As for the "Ruins of the Ice Dwarf Kingdom," players at level 50 will be able to explore the newly designed area in their quest for new rewards. Also, according to a press release, "the content patch introduces Elite skills for the levels 40 and 45. Pet collectors can rejoice – permanent pets will become available with the update." Runes of Magic: Two Months On

Runes of Magic launched back in March, and the game has already topped one million users. With the game doing so well, we decided to track down Community Manager Jörg "Kerensky" Koonen for a chat about what has happened with the game over the last few months, and what Frogster has planned for future updates.


ZAM: Hi Jörg, thanks for taking the time to talk to us.

Jörg "Kerensky" Koonen: Hello Sam, it's a pleasure for me. I have been reading ZAM as a fan myself for many years now and being able to contribute a bit to the site myself through this interview is a great pleasure.

ZAM: We all know that MMO launches often don't run to plan. What problems, if any, did you encounter when Runes of Magic was released in March?

Server Maintenance Will Bring Auction House Change

As we prevously reported, the Runes of Magic team plans to deactivate the ability to put items up for sale against diamonds in the Auction House. Well, the official time has been announced, and the chance will take affect between midnight and 4 a.m. PST on Wednesday morning.

The change will be implemented for an undetermined amount of time for testing purposes. According to the announcement, "You will still be able to trade Diamonds for in-game gold and vice versa."

Change to Auction House Trading Coming May 27

Starting Wednesday, May 27, the Runes of Magic team plans to deactivate the ability to put items up for sale against diamonds in the Auction House. According to the announcement, "You will still be able to trade Diamonds for in-game gold and vice versa."

RoM Tops 1 Million Users; Client Will Be Streamed

Frogster announced today that Runes of Magic has surpassed one million registered users in the United States and Europe. “We are convinced that with the upcoming offering of additional language versions we will achieve further strong growth in Europe," said Andreas Weidenhaupt, Chief Licensing Officer of Frogster Interactive Pictures AG and CEO of Frogster Online Gaming GmbH, in a press release. Korean and Russian versions of the game are planned.

In addition the this milestone, Frogster America also announced that it has partnered with BitRaider to stream Runes of Magic. According to a press release, "The Runes of Magic BitRaider client will allow players to begin playing the game within minutes rather than hours, by downloading only the portions of the game needed to begin. As the game is played, additional content is downloaded in the background."

Lars Koschin, CEO of Frogster America, said Runes of Magic will be the first free-to-play game to utilize this technology, and that the download and installation process should take less than 5 minutes on most systems. You can read the full press release below.

Music Festival Begins

Today's patch for Runes of Magic deactivated the Spring Rain Festival event, but replaced it with a new one: the Music Festival. This new event takes place in Varanas city centre and characters in the game are now able to craft and play musical instruments.

Also included in this patch were a number of bug fixes, as well as new additions to the Phirius Token Shop. Full details on the patch's contents can be found here.
