The World

The world of Dungeon Overlord has several factors: the Underworld, the Overworld, Continents and Regions.

The Underworld is inside mountains, where dungeons of overlords such as you reside. In contrast, the Overworld is the land outside of the mountains, where the elves and their towns, villages, settlements and military structures can be found.

When you are in the Overworld, you can access the World Map which displays continents and regions. By default your continent will show first and your region will be highlighted. Arrows up by the continent name at the top of the window will allow you to look at other continents and clicking on a region will load the Overworld for that region.

All travel times mentioned below are based on real time. Twenty minutes is 20 real life minutes and two days is two real life days!

New Players

As new players enter the game for the first time they are placed in a Starter Dungeon. When looking at a mountain in the Overworld view, the Starter Dungeons are always the bottom five spaces in any mountain. When a region's Starter Dungeons fill up then the next region (top to bottom, left to right on the world map) will begin to be used.

Starter Dungeons can never be abandoned but new players can choose to "reset" at any time before reaching level 2. Once you reach level 2 this option will go away. When a player resets they have a chance to get placed in a different mountain or region, but rarely on a different continent.

Occupying New Dungeons

An overlord can possess one dungeon per level. At level 1 only the Starter Dungeon can be occupied. Once level 2 is reached a second dungeon can be taken over; however, the research technology Underworld Control must first be learned. A third dungeon can be taken at level 3, a fourth at level 4 and so on.

It is important to send goblins out to survey unoccupied dungeons prior to choosing a new one. To survey a dungeon, go to the Overworld and into a mountain (double-click on the mountain or select it and click the eyeglass) and click on the dungeon you want to survey. From here click the triangle-eye icon on the left side of the window, then you can choose which dungeon you want to send a goblin out from. You can survey as many dungeons as you have available goblins.

We highly recommend that you choose a dungeon with a Primordial Earth mine in it for your second dungeon. This resource is heavily used early on. If there's other mining nodes in dungeons such as this that makes it even more valuable!

You are not restricted to only expanding within your own mountain. Prior to having Stonegating technologies, you can expand to any non-starter dungeon within your region! However, for each tile away from your starter mountain, add an extra 4 minutes of travel time when transporting resources and goods.

Stonegating

Two technologies will allow you to use stonegates to travel between regions and continents: Stonegating (regions) and Adept Stonegating (continents). Traveling between regions will most likely take 5+ hours whereas traveling between continents seems to take 1 day per continent. This means that if you are traveling to a continent that is 2 away from yours when looking at the world map, it will take a minimum of 2 days there and 2 days back (so 4 days total travel time).
