I love this gadget! But it's now outdated.

Leves are now undertaken with allowances (points that build like anima). You gain 4 points every 12 hours, for a maximum of 99 points. Will the gadget be updated to reflect the new 12 hour timer?

After finals week I'll be adjusting the moon phases (some time mid December). Elemental aspects are fine as far as I can tell, since those are based upon in-game lore whereas the moon phases were just a guess. I will let everyone know when it's updated.

are you talking about this theory: If so your elements do not match the books, where are you getting your information concerning the hour and element relationships?

The Five Ages - An Eorzean Chronology.

The Preface:

Penned by Lewphon of Sharlayan, master theologian and astrologist, in the Year 233 of the Sixth Astral Era, to weave together the disparate histories of the nations of Eorzea with a common thread - the thread of time. For through its inevitable march the hours turn into Suns, and they into Moons, and they into Years. And from the Years come the Ages of Man. And ever eclipsing those is the eternity of Gods.

Chapter 1 - The Suns.

By the unit of a sole Sun we mean that period which lasts for the duration of four cycles of the six elemental hours - those of Ice, Water, Wind, Lightning, Fire, and Earth. And so is the Sun twenty hours and four, and so shall it ever be.

Chapter 2 - The Moons.

The life of a single Moon spans four cycles of eight Suns, and is thus the sum of thirty and two. The eight deriveth from the elements six, Ice, Water, Wind, Lightning, Fire, and Earth, and the polarities two, Astral and Umbral.

Chapter 3 - The Years.

The year is made when the Moon goeth round the two Astral and Umbral poles, fluctuating between the six elements, and that in turn. In this, the Year can be said to be the length of twelve Moons. The first and second Moons of the Year are the first Astral and first Umbral, and together they share an affinity with Ice. On their watch, all is frozen, and breath of life sloweth to near silence beneath. The second Astral and second Umbral Moons come third and fourth in turn, and they are the Water of the melting Ice, and with their flowing slaketh the thirst of life again. Fifth and sixth are the third Astral and third Umbral Moons, and the Wind bloweth over the Water, carrying its heavenly boons near and far. The fourth pairing of Astral and Umbral Moons come six and seven, when the heavens rageth with the furies of Lightning, and sendeth them below with godly terror to test the faith of men. The ninth and tenth Moons are the fifth Astral and Umbral, as the Lightning turns to Fire, and it charreth growing life with the colors of its flames, bleeding blade and leaf with brilliant hues of crimson and scarlet. Year's end cometh in the eleventh and twelfth Moons, the sixth Astral and Sixth Umbral, in which Earth consumes all, for out of the ground we are taken for the dust we are, and to the dust we shall return.

Chapter 4 - Of Man.

The wisdom of the Twelve saw it fit to grant man with the cycle of years, and in turn the reverence of man bound them to his gods - the year of the Navigator, of the Wanderer, of the Builder, of the Destroyer, of the Warden, of the Traders, of the Matron, of the Keeper, of the Fury, of the Lover, of the Scholar, and of the Spinner. The turning of these Years twelve is a sacred thing, and together they comprise one epoch of man, by which the histories of his endeaver are measured.

Chapter 5 - Of Gods.

The constancy and eternity of time derive from the pulse and breath of the Twelve. And by their divine will the brilliance of the Astral Eras which see man flourish and prosper, and the shadows of the Umbral Eras which see man falter and doubt, are visited upon him in equal, and neither the greatest good nor the greatest evil may escape their purview. Since the peace among the Twelve was broken and life was created to wage their wars, six cycles of the Eras have come to pass in keeping with the elemental order. The Sixth Umbral Era belonged to the Waters, as heavy rains fell and the seas rose high, submerging and cleansing all in a great deluge. With time the waters receded, ushering in the present Sixth Astral Era, during which man has again rebuilt his halls and tilled his lands. Naught save the ken of the Twelve themselves knoweth when the Seventh Umbral Era shall come and end our days. The sole certainty what resides within man is the selfsame as it has ever been - ours is the power to make of our Era what we might.

Essences and Permutations - A Treatise of the Six Elements.

Chapter 1 - The Six Nativities and Myriad Creation.

The spark of Lightning ignites when it strikes, and thus Fire is born. The heat of Fire renders to ash all that it touches, and thus Earth is born. The density of Earth shuns Sun and harbors cold, and thus Ice is born. The armor of Ice melts away, and thus Water is born. The moistness of Water mists and rises, and thus Wind is born. The gusts and sighs of Wind gather the clouds, and thus Lightning is born.

Chapter 2 - The Three conquests, Boundless and Unwavering.

Earth grounds Lightning.
Water erodes Earth.
Lightning boils Water.

Chapter 3 - The Three Submissions, Timeless and Unending.

Fire is extinguished by Wind.
Ice is melted by Fire.
Wind is obstructed by Ice.

Chapter 4 - Dynamic Opposites and the Bifurcation of Polarity.

The six elements are manifest in all things great and small, and their polarity deriveth from the Astral heavens above and the Umbral depths below.
The first book talks about moons and suns but its really just another name for months and days, so thinking about it that way makes things less confusing.

The first part talks about hours and suns. Right now I'm just assuming it starts as midnight and the starting element is Ice. I can't prove that yet though. I've come up with the following daily schedule:

24 Hours = 1 Sun (Day)

12:00AM-Ice 01:00AM-Water 02:00AM-Wind 03:00AM-Lightning 04:00AM-Fire 05:00AM-Earth
06:00AM-Ice 07:00AM-Water 08:00AM-Wind 09:00AM-Lightning 10:00AM-Fire 11:00AM-Earth
12:00PM-Ice 01:00PM-Water 02:00PM-Wind 03:00PM-Lightning 04:00PM-Fire 05:00PM-Earth
06:00PM-Ice 07:00PM-Water 08:00PM-Wind 09:00PM-Lightning 10:00PM-Fire 11:00PM-Earth

The next part talks about moons, 4 cycles of 8, 32 suns. So basically 4 weeks of 8 days each, though they skip anything indicating a week comparison between suns and moons. 32 days in each month. Each day corresponds with one element or astral/umbral. I don't believe the different sections are related when it comes to Astral/Umbral as the first month of the year is all Astral, yet it still has Astral and Umbral on two days of each week according to the books. Astral/Umbral in this section may just refer to light/dark as there are spells which are light/dark. In other parts it may relate to positive/negative. Still figuring that out.

I listed one example week below, I divided the elements between the astral and umbral. the week may start with Astral and end with Umbral, or perhaps reversed, or it may have the elements and then Astral and Umbral at the end as listed in the order in the book. Not sure on this yet. I'll have to watch the moon phases which should help confirm the order I think.

32 Suns = 1 Moon (Month)

Day 01
Astral
Day 02
Ice
Day 03
Water
Day 04
Wind
Day 05
Umbral
Day 06
Lightning
Day 07
Fire
Day 08
Earth

This next part was the easiest to decipher and should be the corrected calender that was shown in an earlier post above. I'll try to create some images when I get a chance. I don't think Astral and Umbral are positive/negative here, as Umbral-Ice would be the same as Astral-Fire which seems redundant. I think its just seperate bonuses to the elements and astral or umbral.

12 Moons = 1 Year

1st Moon (Astral-Ice) Halone
2nd Moon (Umbral-Ice) Menphina
3rd Moon (Astral-Water) Thaliak
4th Moon (Umbral-Water) Nymeia
5th Moon (Astral-Wind) Llymlaen
6th Moon (Umbral-Wind) Oschon
7th Moon (Astral-Lightning) Byregot
8th Moon (Umbral-Lightning) Rhalgr
9th Moon (Astral-Fire) Azeyma
10th Moon (Umbral-Fire) Nald'thal
11th Moon (Astral-Earth) Nophica
12th Moon (Umbral-Earth) Althyk

SE has obviously thought long term here as there are Eras and Eternity? The below list is in the order it was written in the book which is different from the usual Ice being the start but it still follows the same elemental cycle. I don't know if it's intended to start with Wind.

12 Years = 1 Era

Year of the Navigator (Wind-Llymlaen)
Year of the Wanderer (Wind-Oschon)
Year of the Builder (Lightning-Byregot)
Year of the Destroyer (Lightning-Rhalgr)
Year of the Warden (Fire-Azeyma)
Year of the Traders (Fire-Nald'thal)
Year of the Matron (Earth-Nophica)
Year of the Keeper (Earth-Althyk)
Year of the Fury (Ice-Halone)
Year of the Lover (Ice-Menphina)
Year of the Scholar (Water-Thaliak)
Year of the Spinner (Water-Nymeia)

Known history seems to start with a decline or bad/cataclysmic event, possibly the end of the world as everyone knows it, as astral and umbral are reversed here. The game takes place during the 6th Astral Era, but the 7th Umbral could be right around the corner. The 7th should be Wind, perhaps the powerful empire to the north with their mighty airships are involved in ushering in the new, terrible era?

6 Eras = 1?

1st Umbral Era-Wind
1st Astral Era-Wind
2nd Umbral Era-Lightning
2nd Astral Era-Lightning
3rd Umbral Era-Fire
3rd Astral Era-Fire
4th Umbral Era-Earth
4th Astral Era-Earth
5th Umbral Era-Ice
5th Astral Era-Ice
6th Umbral Era-Water
6th Astral Era-Water (Currently the game takes place here)
7th Umbral Era-Wind...

The second book I think is unrelated to the first in terms of elemental effects on a timeframe. It just describes the elements relations to each other, mainly useful for battle.

Ice is strong vs Wind and weak vs Fire
Water is strong vs Earth and weak vs Lightning
Wind is strong vs Fire and weak vs Ice
Lightning is strong vs Water and weak vs Earth
Fire is strong vs Ice and weak vs Wind
Earth is strong vs Lightning and weak vs Water

Astral Positive (Weak vs Umbral?)
Umbral Negative (Weak vs Astral?)

That's all I've got so far, sorry about the long read. Hopefully some of this is helpful.

Accuracy of moon information
# Nov 24 2010 at 9:12 PM Rating: Decent
Hi, I really like this gadget.

I apologize because it sounds like you weren't planning to do any additional work on this but I seem to be having an issue. My game date and time are in sync (or very close to it, being off by maybe 2-3 in game minutes) with the in-game day and time. The moon phase and polarity appear to be off though. I have not really paid attention to exactly how close they are but I think it appears as if the gadgets moon phase and polarity may be just slightly ahead of the in-game moon info. This discrepancy causes me to be concerned about the elemental aspects being slightly off.

Just out of curiosity, is a given minute, of a given day always the same exact elemental day, hour, moon phase and polarity regardless of the "year" you added? If not, then it is possible that an adjustment to the current "year" may correct this issue.

Great work nonetheless! Thanks!

Your app doesn't seem to be in sync with the moon phase on Trabia, it's showing last quarter and the moon icon in the game clearly shows almost full moon. Also the time is very close the minutes, ticking every 90 seconds roughly, your app is about 3-4 min slower than game time is that latency?
One more thing, since I craft a lot every so often I get an unstable crystal and a ring around the orb, why wouldn't that ring coincide with the element of the day or hour? most of the time they don't have anything to do with either I had as an example unstable water when the app had lightning day and lightning hour? shouldn't the unstable crystal have been lightning?
Also noticed the day element changed at 17:00 instead of 00:01.

Yes I know, there is a glitch in the code for detecting DST that I'm working on correcting. There will be a new version released soon, which I've already stated on the forum thread discussing this app.

Not sure what you're talking about with the time, but I don't have it in front of me at the moment so I'll look when I get home.

As far as remembering the server, it should...unless you close the gadget. Then the settings get obliterated and you're back to square one. Rebooting shouldn't be a problem but as soon as you close the gadget manually, poof go the settings. Not something I can control.

Im on Besaid server and the date and time shows as 10/19 4.30 your app shows 10/18/5 7.56
The lev reset time is correct as is the countdown. underneath ive posted my computer time, As Im Aussie and currently +11 GMT 8.13 am Friday 29th oct.

The Eorzea time is out between each program. Im not sure which is correct or how to get the two to match. thus im not sure if your app is telling mne the correct elemental hour.

Good deal!
Your timer is incorrect, possibly?
# Oct 23 2010 at 10:53 PM Rating: Decent
You have the hour element changing every 4 game hours, however, another person has speculated that this may be incorrectly interpreting Square's information, as he stated here:

Quote:
From what I can gather the maker of this app has interpreted the text differently than I have.

The first portion of Square's text which deals with the elemental hours is as follows:

Quote:
By the unit of a sole Sun we mean that period which lasts for the duration of four cycles of the six elemental hours - those of Ice, Water, Wind, Lightning, Fire, and Earth. And so is the Sun twenty hours and four, and so shall it ever be.

Because the app changes elements every four hours, it would seem the app writer has assumed that rather than the elemental cycle repeating four times daily, that each Elemental period lasts four hours.

Here's a visual:

My Theory:

<< 0:00 - 1:00 - 2:00 - 3:00 - 4:00 - 5:00 - 6:00 - 7:00 - 8:00 - 9:00 - 10:00 - 11:00 - 12:00 - 13:00 - 14:00 - 15:00 - 16:00 - 17:00 - 18:00 - 19:00 - 20:00 - 21:00 - 22:00 - 23:00 >>

The App Writer

<< 0:00 - 1:00 - 2:00 - 3:00 - 4:00 - 5:00 - 6:00 - 7:00 - 8:00 - 9:00 - 10:00 - 11:00 - 12:00 - 13:00 - 14:00 - 15:00 - 16:00 - 17:00 - 18:00 - 19:00 - 20:00 - 21:00 - 22:00 - 23:00 >>

In my opinion the app writer is incorrect. The text is worded in such a way that would seem to suggest that elements repeat over the course of the day. "Four cycles of the six elements" meaning the elements repeat four times in one day. In the app writer's version, the elements do not repeat. Also there is the Astral/Umbral polarity to consider. In my version the polarities alternate smoothly, in his version there is no pattern.

However, perhaps he has data that I am unaware of. If you can find out what information he used, other than the text, to create his app, let me know.

His entire theory is posted here:

I don't think so unfortunately, sidebar gadgets are limited to Vista and 7 users. If I can get features into what I would consider a stable state, I would consider putting this up on a site for you to keep open, but unfortunately I'm not familiar with any gadget-like platforms that run on Windows XP.

I will keep you in mind as I develop the Logitech keyboard applet, there may be a way to display that information on a window other than the keyboard.

Great work btw. Are there any other similar pieces of lore you've found in game like the calendar info? I haven't seen a whole lot, but I think that's because, aside from gathering points and aetheryte, a lot of stuff doesn't seem to call your attention to it (for instance, never noticed the Retainer bell until someone pointed it out, even though the NPC talked about it).

Right now the gadget says Moon Element. Really that's inaccurate, it's Day Element. Each chunk of 4 days has a different elemental value, the in game lore refers to it as Moons but it's days really.

Great gadget Wint. This is exactly the type of timer I want to see created, an Elemental Affinity Timer.

The categories are very well organized. Moon Polarity is just that, Astral or Umbral and they cycle through the year in six sets. Dig it. I am a bit lost on your above comment,

Quote:

Looks fine as is. The moon's elemental affinity is derived from the twelve Gods with an elemental alignment representing each of the twelve moons.

The Elemental Hour though, doesn't seem to update itself with the Eorzean hours. In fact, it seems to update rather randomly. As a result, I can't tell which elemental order you chose. After reading the Eorzean Chronology, it seemed clear that the order is:

ICE > WATER > WIND > LIGHTNING > FIRE > EARTH

And this order repeats four times per Eorzean Sun (Gametime Day) for one complete 24 Eorzean hour Sun. Is this elemental order how you interpret the Books?

Also, have you considered adding the Sun Element? With an eight sun Eorzean week, I believe the order would be the same as above for sun 1 to 6. With sun 7 and 8 representing Astral and Umbral, but thier order is unclear from the game's lore.

Although it is unknown how all these various elemental affinities and moon phases affect our character's actions in Eorzea, being able to see how everything aligns in real time is amazing! On a side note, isn't it odd that the Eorzean year is not visible anywhere? Can't pin down the element affinity for the years without it. I think the year is roughly around the 1580s.

Anyways, great job!
