The floating island of Tu'Lia was built thousands of years ago by the Zilart, the first great civilization to walk upon Vana'diel. Descended from the gods, the ancient Zilart race mastered technology and built several monolithic structures such as the teleport crags, Fei'Yin and Lower Delkfutt's Tower. Seeking to build a gateway to paradise, the Zilart then built the magnificent Tu'Lia.
However, this move by the Zilart enraged the mighty gods. The divine creators of Vana'diel destroyed the gateway to paradise, then wiped out the mighty Zilart civilization, casting their celestial capital to the bottom of the sea.
Tu'Lia remained inactive floating high above Vana'diel over Lower Delkfutt's Tower. A handful of Zilart who survived the attack from the gods waited patiently for their chance to someday reopen the gate to paradise.

Adventurers who gain access to Tu'Lia -- which is commonly referred to as "sky" -- will find no shortage of things to do:
Kirin | |
---|---|
Kirin, named after a yellow dragon in eastern mythology, was once regarded as one of the most difficult monsters in Vana'diel. Kirin can only be spawned after defeating four lesser sky gods representing the basic directions of north, south, east and west. During battle, Kirin has the power to spawn weaker versions of the four lesser gods; it also uses astral flow and powerful AoE spells and attacks. Spawn Kirin by trading a Seal of Seiryu, a Seal of Suzaku, a Seal of Byakko and a Seal of Genbu to the ??? at F-8 in Shrine of Ru'Avitau. |
Byakko | |
---|---|
The giant white tiger known as Byakko represents the west and the autumn season. Byakko uses a combination of AoE paralyze and damage moves to wreak havoc on his opponents. Adventurers repeatedly seek battles with this divine tiger in hopes of obtaining a Byakko's Haidate, one of the best leg pieces for many melee jobs. Spawn Byakko by trading a Gem of the West and a Autumnstone to the ??? at E-5/F-5 in Ru'Aun Gardens. |
Genbu | |
---|---|
Genbu is a giant tortoise with roots in Chinese mythology. Genbu, which uses the 2-hour ability invincible, represents winter and the northern direction. Genbu is regarded as the weakest of the four lesser gods of sky. Many solo red mages have successfully defeated Genbu using a combination of kiting and DoT spells; a tank-kiting strategy also works for parties and alliances. Spawn Genbu by trading a Gem of the North and a Winterstone to the ??? at J-4/J-5 in Ru'Aun Gardens. |
Seiryu | |
---|---|
Seiryu, a large dragon, represents the spring season and the eastern direction. Seiryu can use the monk 2-hour ability of Hundred Fists, which adventurers often negate by using a paladin tank or a ranger's shadowbind -- a normal bind spell can also work long enough to pin down Seiryu while adventurers retreat to a safe distance. Spawn Seiryu by trading a Gem of the East and a Springstone to the ??? at K-8/L-8in Ru'Aun Gardens. |
Suzaku | |
---|---|
This large, bird-like creature corresponds with summer and the southern direction. Suzaku uses the red mage's 2-hour ability of chainspell, which is best countered by a red mage chainspelling and repeatedly casting stun. Suzaku also attacks with fire spells and AoE wind attacks. Spawn Suzaku by trading a Gem of the South and a Summerstone to the ??? at E-9 in Ru'Aun Gardens. |
Each of the sky gods is a popped notorious monster. The battles take place in regular zones, meaning that regular alliance and party mechanics apply. Anyone with access to sky can reach the areas of Tu'Lia where god battles take place.
Each lesser god is spawned by trading two rare items to a ???. Each combination of items consists of two stones -- one stone represents a direction, and the other represents a season. These stones are dropped from notorious monsters that appear in Shrine of Ru'Avitau or Ve'Lugannon Palace.
Kirin is popped by trading four seals that are dropped by each of the lesser NMs. These seals include the Seal of Genbu, Seal of Suzaku, Seal of Seiryu and the Seal of Byakko.
The gods and notorious monsters of sky drop numerous pieces of gear, items and synthesis items. Each drops specialized pieces of weapons and armor; some of the most sought-after include the Kirin's Osode, Byakko's Haidate and Genbu's Shield. However, some of the most notable drops from sky are in the form of Abjurations.
Abjurations are scrolls that are dropped from powerful notorious monsters throughout Vana'diel. Abjurations are combined with cursed armor pieces to produce unique, rare/ex pieces of gear.

Adventurers must complete the Zilart mission titled ZM13 - The Gate of the Gods before they can access sky.
Once that mission is completed, sky can be accessed after passing through the sealed gate in Hall of the Gods. Later, sky can also be accessed from the teleport crags by completing the quest Teleportation to Ru'Aun Gardens.
Safely navigating through sky isn't easy. The region is filled with dolls, weapons, pots, golems, elementals and other mobs that agro to magic casting. For this reason, always remember to carry Sneak Oils and Prism Powders when traveling anywhere in sky.
