I've been fishing in Bastok Mines at the drain / sewage water / w/e it is, with a clothespole and lugworms for over 4 hours and I've gotten 21 rusty buckets, 4 rusty leggings, and 4-5 gil. Not a single subligar. I've been fishing from full moon to around 60%. I'm gonna try new moon when it comes, but don't waste your time fishing for them otherwise. I also wouldn't use a sabiki rig unless you're getting it from the windurst fishing guild. Sabiki rigs are 25k-30k at the bastok AH on Phoenix, and the quest reward for Like a Shining Subligar is only 25k.
Like many of the other posters have mentioned the best spot is in the drainage water in Bastok Mines.
I was using a Clothespole and Lugworms, 2% New Moon, Windsday, I caught 7 rusty subligars within 1 hour. I had 3 from yesterday which took several hours, so I'm done catching my 10 for the kurayami quest.
My advice to all: Wait till a new moon to try for these, it will save you ALOT of time.
I must have terrible luck. 2 Hours of fishing during the new moon in Bastok Mines with clothspole + lugworm and not a single subligar. I ended up with 93 Rusty Buckets and 28 Rusty Leggings...didn't count how many times I didn't catch anything.
Finished this quest today, and took me about 5 hours fishing to get 8 subligars, with Fishing Skill: 0. The other two I bought.
I used a Clothespole Rod (1k gil from AH) because I read that you need a rod to catch "big fish", and lugworms (11 gil from Bastok Mines NPC). The nice thing about fishing in Bastok Mines, is that there are no fish in the sewage system spot, meaning that you will not lose any bait after catching the items, unless your line breaks, which only happens if you are careless. The Rod never broke on me either, unlike a Carbon rod that broke after about 10 items caught.
Another nice thing about this spot is that the most common items fished are Rusty Buckets. These are furnishings that have the Moghancement: Fishing, which is needed to fish up items more often. Since I did not know if having more Buckets layed out in my Moghouse effects how many subligar I'd get, I just put all 50 in there (on a new mule, FYI...and each bucket adds one to storage, so no loss on storage anyway).
The subligar are, however, quite rare, but when you continue to fish, you will get a lot of Rusty Buckets, so after you have 50 in MH (if you even go for that many), you can NPC the rest for 48 gil a piece (no fame). This added up to an amount equal to 2 Auction House subligars (@ 2500 gil a piece). Kind of inefficient and frustrating if you get so many buckets, but I think saving 25k gil is worth it (10k gil for 4 rusty subligars? {No, thanks}).
I fished these up using a Composite Fishing Rod + Sabiki Rig in the Drain/Sewage area of Bastok Mines. I had the fishing mog enhancement and only caught items in the drain. Using this combo I had no line or rod breaks over 7-8 hours of fishing.
Still, this item seems to be semi-rare and it took me about 7 hours to fish 10 of them. However, during that time, I also netted about 20+ Rusty Leggings.
well im trying to fish my own up but i have not been able to do so. I was wondering which bait i should be using i keep getting rusty buckets off lugworms and when i use a the sabiki rig it keeps saying i catch nothing fishing lvl is 10. the subligar are 10-15k on Fairy
On the advice of a friend, I moved from fishing in Norg to fishing in Bastok Mines and my results were greatly improved. In about two hours I got 9 Rusty Leggings and 4 Rusty Subligars. I'd definitely recommend fishing for these in Bastok over anywhere else.
For those who're interested, my fishing skill level is only 2, I have Fishing Moghancement, and I'm using a Composite Rod with a Sabiki Rig. I'm fishing in that area that kind of looks like a drain right by the zone to Zeruhn Mines and Bastok Markets. All I ever get with this setup are Rusty items, copper rings, and gil. It's perfect for the NIN scroll quests.
The only 'fish' in the sewers is the crayfish. So, if you're tight for money, buy a stack of lugworms at the nearby item shop.
You won't be able to grab stuff as much as a rig does, but you also won't be tossing bait in pulling up the crays. I do however recommend you have a better rod then they sell there, at least a carbon.
[Edit:] Okay, Mithran... I just busted my carbon on something in there... (Mind you've I've fished about 150 crayfish up (and random assorted trash) and never busted it before...)
I am trying to complete the Like a Shining Subligar quest (Sylph Server), and have looked in every AH for a week, only to find one pair of these - at 3k. When I fish, even in Norg (with Mog Enhancement: Fishing), I continue to pull up fish instead of any rusty items. Any suggestions on how to get these subligar - bait, pole, location, etc?
try bastok markets ^^ trust me it works well and my fishing is less than one.... other things fished up there: Rusty Subligars Rusty Leggings Rusty Buckets Copper Rings 1 Gil
Edit- finally found someone in game to help me. For those that also wanted to know, go with a pole used to catch large fish or many small fish (check description, I went with a single hook rod since it was cheapest) and the bait is either insect or crayfish paste.
