Bump...

I'm interested in this question being answered by someone who has tested it as well. I have a 75 SAM but personally I've always just went with sole sushi + osode, shura haidate, hachiman hands, feet, etc. Basically I've never personally tested the AF hands and rochi jinpachi but if it is possible to put them on, use shogun riceball, then put wyvern helm and hachiman hands back on and keep the effects, I believe the shogun riceballs will be better than sole sushi. Accuracy is nice and all but come on... not like we need much accuracy with meditate merited down all the way, zanshin, TP store, and a small amount of accuracy. 100 TP comes in no time as it is.

With food, hasso, and the gear I macro in for WSs I have about +65 str on top of my base str. I've noticed that even with this massive amount of str my damage isn't much higher than with +40 str. I've heard rumors that after a stat reaches 100 it caps? Dunno if that is true but if it is then the only way to increase your damage further would be to load up on atk. If that is so, and the rochi jinpachi + AF hands enhance riceballs even after you unequip them, then that would make them the best food for samurai once you get 100+ str.

So in short, does anyone know if the enhancement from the jinpachi and these gloves stay after they are removed?

After trying this out myself I've concluded that the effects do not stick after you remove the jinpachi/kote. To keep the extra effects of the rice balls you do in fact have to keep them on the entire time. Oh well, it was worth a shot. ^^

Allright, so. I come to my first party here (this was awhile back) and got my kuftal coffer key. Next day I obtained the other two AF quests, flagged this, and started with help from a 75 WHM/SMN, and a 75 RNG/NIN (For DD purposes in case we got aggro). Unfortunately enough for me, my sneak untimely wears off while I'm stuck in between Sabotenders. we tried to fight them off but 1000 needles proved to be a bit harsh. Bam, wiped and we had to HP back to Jeuno. So, after a bit of debating we Teleport-Altep and go back into Kuftal. This time the WHM Re-raise 3s herself and then we try again. We get into the second map where the tunnels are, and this time the RNG forgets to wide-scan. Before we know it we are STARING at Guivre, and he spots us. He barely LOOKED at me and I died...ok, I got 2-shot before dying. WHM tries to run away and zone it but she died too, he ate straight through her stoneskin. RNG luckily camoflauged before he aggroed her. Oh dear god, I was about to say ***** it, I did NOT want my friends to lose that much XP over a damn pair of AF hands. This is where the fun part comes in. Since Guivre doesn't depop, the RNG informed her main LS about it and they came in to kite it to the zones. Yay for RMT party MPKs.... Anyway. After the WHM died about 4 more times, the RNG died once, and me dying twice more, we finally found a damn coffer and I got my Myochin Kote. (/joy) Thank you Khamila and Arianne of Sylph, I love you both dearly for the help. Moral of the story: Make SURE you know Guivre isn't up before you go looking for this coffer. It is NOT EASY with him running around. XD

Now, what sucks is...I'm scared to death about trying to obtain the map for Kuftal. XD
For those fighting about gloves/food...

Stop comparing the two foods and the two kote, they're for different situations. Learn to use them both to your advantage.

If you have trouble with accuracy, use Ochiudo's Kote and Sushi.
If you're having no trouble with accuracy, or have a bard using the accuracy songs, use AF gloves + tonosama/shogun riceballs. However, I think you'd have better results with Ochiudo's Kote and an attack+ food of your choice.

In my opinion the AF kote are only good when also using Roshi Jinpachi, since then you'll have double attack+10 and Attack+100 if using Shogun Rice Balls.

Ok. There are reasons why you would use sole sushi, and rice balls at different times. for example: if you are sam/thf you would want to use sole sushi, not just for the acc (tho it helps) but for the +5 str. sam ws's are 75%str and 25%atk based. so as sam/thf you want that extra str to make your ws's as high as possible. If you were to be a sam/war, then i can see to use shogun rice balls, your more conserned on dmg over time, and throwing out as many ws's as possible. I wouldnt sugjest using O kote's after lvl 70 anyways, the 70 JSE hands are awsome, and O kote's are up to 3-4 mil on siren server. so sole sushi with JSE hands, or shogun rice balls and af gloves are best. (my opinion)
ok lemme lay down the law.

If you guys wanna see facts take a look at the food chart. here's a link to it.

http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/itemdb/food.php

Check out the Shogan riceballs. hell yea the sweetness of it all.

I have the kote's yea and they're awesome. Honestly though they aren't as good as people say they are. Take them off and compare your hit's. "Sometimes you'll get a higher hit" than without them on. So as for me, i'm selling my kote's and using them towards a hauby. LOL. I think that's the smartest thing to do in my opinion.

For this fact and this fact alone. Your attack will be uber with your AF gloves and some shogan riceballs, don't forget your attack CAN be capped, the kote's can give you that extra gil towards hauby, and they just flat out look good. POINT BLANK.

hehe enjoy. ^^

Sole Sushi: +5str +5dex +15% Accuracy
O-kote's: ATT+20

Shogun Riceballs: HP +20 Dex+4 Vit +4 Chr+4 /with Myochin Kote's on you also get: ATT +50 Def+ 30 Double ATT+5

Myochin Kote: HP+15 Dex+4 Enmity+2

Now you do the math. enjoy ^^

i almost completely wholeheartedly disagree
i am a 69 galka samurai and i use OKote and Sushi for onc simple reason: more acc
boosting attack and double attack means absolutely nothing if u cant hit the mob in first place. Samurai's job is to get as much tp as possibel and, as we make very poor tanks at higher lvls (without serious equipment macros which seem to me to leave the job's specialty undeveloped while trying to enhance a small role it occasionally plays) the only way to get a good, steady rate of tp, is too have high accuracy. Though sushi is expensive, squid sushi (all the acc bonuses of sole at 1/3rd the price) is cheap compared to most of the high-acc gear post 60. Personally, i have all the standard acc gear ( 2 snipers, hauby, mermans gorget, life belt, etc...) and i still find that on IT xp mobs at 69, i whiff far too often without sushi. Perhaps mithra (and i think taru) who have naturally more dex have less trouble than I, but the fact is I wear 13ish mil worth of gear, i have +38 to acc ++10dex(another 5 acc for 43 total) and if idont eat sushi during xp i feel more like a glorified fanning boy than a DD or WS expert. For me there is no question that sushi is the best food and i ususally have 3 different kinds on me when i lvl (some squid some sole some +1) I dont buy gil, i have worked for all my goodies, mainly because i feel i owe it to my parties to get lots of tp, predictably, so as to facilitate WSing i.e. to hit as often as is possible. Fruthermore, the higher lvl WSes that deal the best dmg (yukikaze and gekko) are very low accuracy. Also, as i said before, without being able to hit, another 20-30 to attack and a boost to double attack (even a significant one) will do round about nada. Since sushi is, for me, necessary to feel i do my job effectiively, rice balls are out imo which obviously makes the af gloves useless (4 to dex is nice, but there are many many things better... like 20att) and therefore the best gloves for sam without a doubt are ochiudos kote (only other to consider are horomusha and we dont need the eva so mighta as well have the extra 5attack and 2mil gil). I have tried this, tho no extensive experiments have been done. I ate a riceball in a party with my gf (who made it for me) and i could not hit the mob to save my life (i beleveive it was a crab... mebbe a crawler) watched the food icon like a hawk adn as soona sit wore back to sushi, back to tp land, back to pulling aggro without even wsing. While this instance does not provide conclusive evidence, it conifrmed what I had concluded the listed effects would do.
Perhaps with the roshii jinpachi, the 100 or so attack and +10 to double attack (combined with being higher lvl in relation to the majority of mobs in the game) there would be more of an advtange to af+ riceballs. In fact im sure there would be situations u would use em in, but not vs. a god with <mega boss> evasion. Still, vs. a god with high defense, it might be your only recourse. I dont like to think of things as this is best period but for where i am now, galka sam @69, i am completely confident that the best food+glove combo for me is Okote and sushi. I would love to see a mithra sam show me up with crazy double attack rates and critical hits ( well mebbe not lvoe it lol) but it hasnt happened yet.

please forgive me for i am about to be a a$$.
here is a tip, STOP FIGHTING STUPID IT+++++ MOBS!!!!
with all that +acc you got and you still need sushi to hit o.O; i bet your dmg sucks >_<
maybe do BCNM40 for a peacock charm?

just wanted to add that it doesn't really matter on your att and acc and anything else when fighting a god, most of the time you stand back and meditate 300% TP and Spirits Within ( so having high HP helps )

What I see is you do not know very much about the AF Kote MuksaLP.

Let's look real fast at the current gear and food for Samurai that's popular.

==Gear==
Ochiudo's Kote: +20atk -5eva (Looks good right?)
Myochin Kote: +15HP +4dex +2enmity (watch out for this next part it comes up fast) Enhances effect of "rice balls" We'll get to this later

==Food==
Sole Sushi: +5str +5dex +15% Accuracy
Shogun Rice Ball: +20HP +4dex +4vit +4chr

----
My Point? I know I'm drawing it out, but clearly the Okote armor wins right? Yes...if you eat or need Sole Sushi, by all means go with them, this game is about personal preference, but if you are judging PURELY on your highest attack potential then in comparison the Okote look like crap. And here is why.

When you eat the HQ Shogun Riceball which costs roughly the same as a stack of Sole Sushi. You get an added effect when you eat the Shogun Riceball, when wearing the Myochin Kote, which will be listed below which is why this single piece of armor outweighs the Okote by far.

Added Effect with Myochin Equipped:
+50Attack +30Defense +5 Double Attack
Wearing the Rosha Jinpachi Doubles the added effect if you wear both. So double all those stats if you wear that too, and you've got something that beats the Okote by 5x the attack power. you gain good defense for when you'll pull hate from such attack, and a hefty boost to Double Attack so you can gain TP even faster.

In summation, I don't see the arguement, I understand Okote are great, and I have a pair myself but this obviously outweighs them, just the Double Attack bonus alone I would think would make it worthwhile. But you also get x2.5 Attack versus Okote. So any of you Samurai who already hit well enough, I highly suggest you use these, and for those who flame about Okote, you're right...but you'll only be right for 22LVs and then for the rest of the Sam's life they can do Rice Balls or something else that helps them boost their damage. Yeah Mithkabobs offer a relative similar boost to ATK, but they don't add the +5 Double Attack, nor the +30def which is incredibly useful for additional damage from double attacks, and +4vit +30def for those Samurai who are trick tanks

See it is true that using myochin kote and a common rice ball such as the Tonosama... will give you 45 ATK 45 DEF but if you've looked and checked, the Mithkabob equals the same amount of attack without the gloves so slap a pair of Ochis on and you'll have more attack then before. personally Ochi can suck my nuts but im just being concious of others ideas of armor use.

I was in school and bored (as usual >.>) so i checked these out. On mysterytour, he said that a certain type of rice ball gave sam's +8 to double attack with these on (O.o). So don't just think that "Rice Ball" is the only rice ball that works, just a reminder.

Well that was an amussing quest. After flaging the quest i spent the next 3 days (speraticly in between leveling) scaning the coffer spawn sight at the entrance to Kuftal Tunnel. Not relizinging that it hade spawned there i venture deep in to the tunnel after several near escapes, I return to the entrance run into my friend and he points out "Hey there's the coffer". After i get the old gautlets and chug a few beers to live down that stupid moment. i grab three 60+ friends and we stab DS with no problem, easy quest save the tunnel hunt.

well let's say you are a 56 sam and you have 200 base attack. I know I have more than this but let's just put it out there as a number. Meat mithkabobs give +22% attack. This would be 44 attack for our little underestimation here. Add 20 attack for the kote and you have 64 attack. That is how 20 attack from gloves can out do 45 attack from riceballs and af gloves. The other stats that come with it; however, and their worth to you as a sam are up for debate.

You need to check up on some of the food items. Yes they list +Attk 25% (example) but they only give up to a certain level of attk, Meat Mithkabobs give a max of 60 @ 272. So in that case it would be 60+20 > 80+attack. Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that Attack only takes you so far and will cap out. Having +80 attack does no good if you meet the cap @ +20... Something to think about.

Attack isn't everything. I like the DEX+4. That means hitting more. Attack means nothing if you don't hit.

That said I'll now kill my own argument. Sole Sushi gives STR+5, DEX+6, ACC+15%, RACC+15%, HP+20, and Sleep Resistance. That added to the Ochiudo's Kote means rarely missing and doing tons of damage, and no rice ball exists that can top that even when combined with the Myochin Kote.

The only value here is for people who don't wanna spend 50k on a stack of Sole Sushi and/or people who like their armor sets to match.

what about the defense bonus you get with shogun rice balls? seems to me like when youre out there busily getting hate from all the damage youre doing you need the def boost- especially if youre using snipers rather than woodsman rings. just a thought but does sole sushi add +30 def like shogun riceballs?

O-kotes arent even that good, o i dont miss alot, ya so you arent elvaan are ya? teh o-kotes offer zero accy period, DEX is Rgned Acc and 0.5% acc along with Crit hit feature, the M-kote are very very nuaghty lil suckers if you ask me, spending 1mil+ on the O-kotes are not wroth the trouble of farming (or buying gil, SHAME ON YOU) The rice ball effect knocks the O-kotes out of the water, if you want a good soild pair of gloves that you wont miss and are lvl 25 Get the Fedration Tekko's (in-correct spelling) they dont costalot, and they are nice +3acc +3 ranged Acc which i think you should be practicing ranged other then trying to look good, looking good means nothing, its all about the performance, if your a good samurai or other job, then YOU make the armor you wear look great not having the best armor doesnt make you a bad player, its other who judge you on this, thats thier default for being teh jerk, not you, do what you feel not what others want you to do, if you wanna discuss this with me or strongly agree with what i said Message me on Ifirit my name is Agerbon, we will sit back and suck back a few beers peace out.

I prefer this over Ochiudo's Kote just because I'm cheap.. lol. If I was really rich (which i'm not haubergeon broke me) I would keep the kote. Tonosama R.Balls + these gloves own. But an Ochiudo's Kote and a Chiefkabob are much better. If you use regular Mithkabobs and use a Kote you'd be better off just getting these gloves stacked with some Rice Balls. :)

yeah no kidding. i went through some trouble today to get the kuftal coffer. finally got it then "warped" back to jeuno lol. man i dunno dex+4 is WEAK for samurai. how about accuracy +4 then i'd wear these.

edit : I finally hit 56 today and used these in combination with the Tonosama Rice Balls. It really is kind of amazing. The bonus is good, wayyy more dexterity then just the rice alone. I also learned that Myo-chin means "bright and rare." It is a family name of old crafters in Japan who made some of the earliest armor. Unlike European armor (which was solid and thick - made to resist axes and large broadswords) Asian armor usually is weaker, yet more flexible and dextrous.

I have both right now, AF Gloves and Ochiudos Kote.
Since I am only 55, I cant test the AF gloves yet, however, I have a ton (at least I think I do) of attack right now, so maybe I will benefit more from the 4dex the af gloves have.
Would be nice to sell ochiudos though.. 500k on Odin.

Well if you look at the rice balls enhancement: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?fitem=1215 you'll notice that it's more defense based. It adds 31 def and HP Regen while healing +1 to the rice ball's effects when you wear the Myochin Kote. So given the typical role that a SAM plays (damage dealer/SCs), this isn't very helpful.

So if it were me, I'd say the +20ATK is better. If you play the role of tank more often (which would be obscure), then maybe this is better suited. You'll rack up more hate and have more DEF.

That said, I like having the full set of AF armor and that obscene price of 450K per Ochiudo's Kote on Quetzalcoatl is enough to keep satisfied with my current gear.
RE: better?
# Sep 30 2004 at 2:37 PM Rating: Decent
actually, you get the attack and defense as a bonus, where as you usually get more HP regeneration without the gloves. Also, you should sell the Ochiudo's. I'm a 57 SAM myself and I've even confirmed it with other SAMs that are my level. MK is the way to go. plus, with +4 DEX, you get a slight critical boost as well as more HP. Overall, just go with the AF and save yourself about 550k (Ragnarok OK price). Oh, and for later levels, the domaru is much better than haubergeon cause SAM is a good puller with third eye and all, plus it gives more TP when you've been hit, as well as saving you atleast 1-1.5 million gil, which not many of us have >_>;;.

Actually, the rice ball enhances attack by 46 as well as some more DEX.... so I would think the AF gloves are better, myself...

Of course, you could keep the AF gloves, eat the rice ball, and then switch back to Ochiudo gloves. ^^

After receiving the quest from Guslam, you need to do the following:

- Obtain a coffer key from Kuftal Tunnels. You can probably find one by grouping there between 52-55, hunting Robber Crabs.

- Once you have the coffer key, search the area for a Treasure Coffer. Here's a map to the coffer locations: http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/treasure/Fr_Kuftal_Tunnel.html

- Upon opening the coffer, you will receive the key item "Some old gauntlets"

- Go back to Guslam who will tell you that these are the gauntlets he was referring to, but they are beyond his ability to repair.

- Then goto the Tenshodo hideout (the spire place to the left of the auction house in Lower Jeuno). Talk to the mithra in the center of the room, who will sell you a key to an old toolbox for 1k gil.

- Travel to Port Jeuno. By the AH (item shop side) there is a ??? point on an old toolbox. Talk to it.

- It will spawn a cutscene with Borghertz. He will repair the gauntlets if you retrieve the dark flame.

- Now gather a party to fight a NM bomb called Dark Spark in Castle Zvahl at F-8. I had gathered a 55DRK, 54SAM (me), 72RDM for this. Which was more than sufficient.

- There are 4 torches at the Dark Spark location. Have one person touch a torch (make sure you remember which torch you touched). And he will spawn. Kill him (his explosion is brutal, so prepare to stun).

- Once killed, touch the same torch that you spawned him from (touching another will spawn the spark again). You will receive the shadow flames.

- Return to the old toolbox and you'll receive the Myochin Kote. :)

Hope this helps!
