Looks like the trick is to do max damage and hold aggro over your merc. Then the merc gets charmed instead of you. Of course you need to be able to handle being pounded on by both the mob and your merc!
Yeah, I get that. But I don't think I was charmed at the moment of the mob's death since my nuke was the kill shot. Also would the corpse be lootable if you don't get credit for the kill? I was able to loot right away.

You probably did more damage when not charmed than you did while charmed so it flagged you for the kill so you were able to loot.
MOLO'd this mob successfully twice and neither time did I receive the Hunter Achievement credit. Was able to loot the corpse. Got charmed several times each fight but neither time was my toon charmed when the mob died. Nevertheless I wonder if the charm affects who gets credit for the kill. May have to group kill this toon just so my main won't be charmed during the fight. Quite annoying!

If you are still charmed when it dies, you are flagged as a NPC instead of a player and won't get credit.
Taer Reega spawns in the tunnels on the east side of the southern zone. The tunnels have three entrances. Enter the third entrance from the north and you will soon come to an intersection. To the left is the Taer Reega area. To the right is the Lor Reega section. It seems that any of the static (non-roaming) mobs to the left can be placeholders for Taer Reega. He spawned for me once in the hallway, once in the room at the end of that hallway, and twice a bit further down the tunnel. He does charm but unless he charms your cleric at the wrong time you shouldn't have any trouble with him.
In addition to the drops listed, he also dropped Formal chest piece two out of five kills for me.
