To merge or not to merge...
# May 24 2007 at 7:26 PM Rating: Decent
Turul, I couldnt disagree more on your comment about server mergers.
A greater player population per server would be the answer to so many players complaints and it would relieve the most consistant complaint which I hear voiced EVERY DAY ingame.
and that is /general "well I'm done LFG for today, back tomorrow to try again"
No other complaint amounts to a hill of beans if you cant find a group to hunt with.
Solo'ing after several years sux pure and simple.
If I wanted to spend my EQ time solo'ing I would play Diablo or another play with yourself game.
I can log in at any time other than raid times and spend 95% of that time with LFG up and spend that time solo'ing / tradeskilling...boring s**t!!
If the server is vastly populated I would log in and get a group and spend time hunting instead of LFG.
And dont give me that bulls**t about starting a group myself its the same thing, /general "Group in XXX needs, XXX class to roll, pst" and then sit around with 3 other peeps for an hour or more looking for that last class needed until the 3 souls you found start 1 by 1 heading out.
The bottom line is there is NOT enough people in the LFG pool to get groups together, content doesnt mean **** if you cant get the group together to hunt it.
Do you really think that new players to the game give 2 shakes about this expansion or that expansion if whenever they log in they are unable to find anyone to group up with and learn about the game?
I have several RL friends and several ingame friends who dont play EQ anymore because they got bored with it, bored with not finding groups but only raiding and soloing.
I have one ingame friend who "inherited" 5 accounts from people who quit the game and gave them to her and now she has quit as well. That's 6 accounts that SOE has lost because they got bored of LFG all the time.
The entire reason for expanding the servers from the original amount the game began with was the common complaint of overpopulation and at the time that was a brilliant solution, more servers.
Well the glory days of eq are long gone and everyone knows it, at least everyone who has been with eq since the begining, now its about game survival and I for one plan to ride this ***** down in flames if need be.
I'm invested like all the rest of you hardcore.
I dont disagree with about how many expansions they release, I love them.
I look forward to the next expansion because it means more quest's I can solo and gives me at least something about the game to get excited about.
At this stage of the game solo'ing & LFG bites the big one and raiding is only minorly entertaining after all these years. What IS entertaining is finding a group and spending a couple hours hunting and BS'ing with them.
Who do you shoot the s**t with when solo'ing? or LFG? Raiding? /general chat is about it, which is about as entertaining as doing dain's but, thats the game nowadays.
Right now, this very moment its 10a.m. and there are 138 people in the /general channel and nobody is talking in it and there are 2 people in the LFG tool.
I started this game so I could log in and have choices, a choice to group or solo, tradeskill explore whatever I choose. I dont have the group choice now and the response of "well not many people play this time of day" doesnt cut the cheese.
If when I purchased this game it said on the label "Game play with certain limitations including time of day" I never would have started it. EQ is a social game, bottom line and you can shake your head no as often as you like but that is a fact of the matter.
If social intercourse does nothing for you then solo your *** off and who cares.
But if you enjoy the comraderie and entertainment of a group effort then you are not goin to be satisfied with what you will find in EQ today.
My toon lvl range are as follows:
75nec / 75bst / 72rog / 67chant / 65dru / 64sk / 62cleric and I advertise all of them for anything no preferances or restrictions and find zilch.
You say server merging is not a solution, I dont think there will ever be any single solution to satisfy all of the issue's people have addressed in this forum but as long as I'm in a group hunting I'm happy and thats not possible with the population of my server atm.
On the contrairy Turul, server merging is the solution to at least one problem, empty zones and lack of players.

I really wish SoE would spend some time reinventing the 200plus zones that are not being used at all, I mean I love South Karana, however the only reason I have had to go there was during the Fabled event to get some tunes the lev cloak.

They need to up the levels of all old world mobs in game, every zone should have content for every level, SK is a huge huge zone theres no reason why the, say , east side of zone couldnt have some level 65 gnolls etc...

and Id like to see some game wide item drops, nothing fixed, but whos to say that an SK gnoll for example in its travels couldnt happen across a good magic sword or a nice aug. make the items random and stats/effects based on level of mob. if they can add sunshard drops to every mob in the game, this dosnt seem too far fetched.

I love the fact that the level keeps going up in game, otherwise a 3rd shift working, father of 2, with very little quality EQ time would never be able to get some of the gear from MPG etc... yesterdays raid mobs are next years single group mobs and soloable a year after that...anyone remember Lodi :)

Love the game, very relaxing after playing Gears of War :) keep those expansions coming.

Safe hunts and rare drops!

PS. let us permanently name our pets! ( and refuse ***** as a name, silly necros )

Expansion after expansion.. will it ever stop?
some more thoughts
# May 17 2007 at 7:15 AM Rating: Decent
The most important thing in a mmorpg for me is that I can keep developing my character. When I run out of goals, I cancelled my EQ account, when I saw a lot new ones, I renewed it. The raid situation is always the most difficult, if content is too easy, high end players will complain that any fool can do it. If it is too hard, people will quit because they can't progress. There are many people out there who played EQ for many years, have great skill and nice gear - but they can't progress further, because their guild lacks the numbers. In the old times of EQ, you could kill anything if you had a solid tank and a good healing chain. To prevent this, many game mechanics were introduced. Aggro changes, adds, debuffs, emos, increasing dps etc. At that time these were good ideas, so a raid of boxed toons cant beat anything. But these same mechanincs prevent raids of 25-40 beating anything past anguish / dod / porthio now. Success is the main driving force in any game. Server merge is not a solution. Make older content (like don / por) easier, so lesser guilds can progress as well. If this nerf is called an expansion and I have to pay for it, I am willing to :) Rather that, than level 80, and a couple of new zones where I cannot raid because my guild is not good enough, and which does not have one-groupable item upgrade for me, because I have better raid items, like TSS and TBS. I completed ALL ashengate quest with 2 of my friends, and did not get any single item upgrade in the process. And my access to the TSS raid zones, that is useless to me.
from a raider's viewpoint
# May 17 2007 at 6:56 AM Rating: Decent
There are a lot of people out there who have max AA, for them it is very good to add new AAs. About the new level cap: the only problem is with this, that it will make many zones obsolete, AA XP will suck even in ashengate. Also, extra level will not help the guilds who struggle with low numbers. When a raid guild loses 10-20 members, the remaining 30-40 is not able to raid and progress anymore. +5 level is approx. +10% power, that is not enough. When the cap was raised from 70 to 75, that did not help a much with DpoB progression. Simply, because most high end targets have either insane regen rate, or increasing dps, or an increasing number of adds. If I were Sony, I would revise some of the high end raid targets, and reduce their regen and remove the dps increase. So if a guild have 30 people, with sufficient skill and gear, they can still do it, just in a longer time.
More quests left unfinished?

First and foremost my main is in a casual raiding guild. Yes, these do exist and can be successful. We probably are 3-4 expansions behind high level guilds but our members have been allowed to acquire some decent gear.
Expansion after expansion does become frustrating when you are playing with this type of guild. You start out a quest, lets say BIC. You get about half done and a new expansion is dropped and everyone moves to it's general content. Players get frustrated and determined to finish their open quests that they buy a new pc and start another account or acquire one from a friend who quits. These people become good enough at "boxing or hydraing" that you cannot get into those groups cause they get into a familiar pattern that if broken makes them less effective.
My main is a 75 bard, 1100+aa, epic 2.0 with over a year of in-game playtime (account was started in Nov 2001) maybe SOE can tell me why I spend hours lfg without a single tell.
Expansions once a year-yes.
Upgrade old content and gear-yes (does not require a new expansion)
Add new quests-yes (does not require a new expansion)
And last but not least change the minimum requirement they claim is needed to play the game or fix the game so you can run it on this. The retail boxes still claim PII-400, 256 mb ram,GeForce 1 video card, and a 28.8k modem. This is so far fetched, I do not think you could run a trader on that, lol. I run a P4-2.8, 512 ram, 256 mb videocard, and unfortunately had to switch to dial-up (cause of a recent move-the community I live in has no affordable nor realiable high-speed). I have a difficult time raiding in instances and open zone raid mobs is impossible.
Lots of people wanting alot from a huge successful game. Maybe a step back to the basics is in need?
I knew this would happen !!!

SOE AQUIRES SIGIL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May 15, 2007 San Diego, CA – Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), a global leader in the online games industry, today announced that it has completed a transaction to purchase key assets of Sigil Games Online, Inc. Through the deal, SOE now owns Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Sigil’s tentpole property, a highly-successful massively multiplayer online game. The Sigil acquisition also builds on SOE’s successful strategy of cultivating game development studios around the world to further boost the company’s capabilities. The announcement was made by John Smedley, President, Sony Online Entertainment.

As part of the acquisition, a majority of the Sigil team will join SOE, integrating into SOE’s worldwide group of studios which includes offices in San Diego, Seattle, Austin, Denver, Los Angeles and Taiwan. The acquisition will strengthen SOE’s position as a leader in the online gaming space by expanding the company’s portfolio of gaming offerings.

“With an unparalleled team and exceptional product, Sigil has been a creative force in the online games space. We look forward to continuing the vision for Vanguard and to continue to deliver some groundbreaking game play,” said Smedley.

In May 2006, SOE acquired the title’s rights and the two companies agreed to co-publish Vanguard. The MMO launched in late January of this year and has sold nearly 200,000 retail and digital units worldwide. Sigil CEO and Vanguard creator, Brad McQuaid will become a consultant with SOE as Vanguard Creative Advisor.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes takes place in the fantasy setting of Telon, a vast and ancient world of magic, intrigue and adventure where thousands of players from around the world have formed a steadfast community exploring the grandeur of a world crafted by the seminal fantasy artist Keith Parkinson. The game introduced many groundbreaking new features and an art direction second to none.

Well...

Well I really dont know what to say. I agree with alot of what Crastin said about the whining as well as alot of the complaints themselves. I did notice that alot of people were complaining about the expansions focusing on the High End raiders. Honestly these are the people who are bringing in the consistent money to the company. They have been here and will be here long after all these people that arent getting as much attention are gone. They are doing what is important for their business. You always take care of the existing income and then worry about building the new income. I have noticed some people saying that they give too many expansions. Well if you look at the rate at which alot of these bigger raiding guilds are moving forward you will notice that SOE is merely trying to keep up with the pace and not force that existing income into finding new and exciting things to donate to elsewhere. Alot of people have complained about lower levels not being able to play cause the game is mostly all high end players. DoD missions were built for just that reason. I think the problem is these lower level players are wanting to focus attention of certain things that they each want at the current time. Well when you factor in all those different people all over wanting different things its virtually impossible to please everyone. I hate to say it but the cure for this problem is just as much in your hands as it is in SOE's. You want more lower level players to group with? They are out there they just dont all play at the same time. New players are coming to the game everyday. They need guidance and want a friend to hunt with as well. ADVERTISE YOURSELF and quit waiting on everyone else to fix your problems. Post on the web and forums for different classes. Check with guilds and players from different servers. Players can move from server to server and it just might be worth paying a few dollars to get the kind of group your looking for. All im saying is do something about it on your end. Like Aenril said start making posts just keep them clean and not so sarcastic. In the military they teach us not to point out anyone esles mistakes until you make sure your not making any yourself. Start with yourself then talk to SOE.

There is fewer people playing EQ, it is a fact in a game as old as EverQuest. And then, with fewer live players, there is an increasing number of zones to play with, thus making people more spread which makes it harder to find a group as well. This is the main argument for revamping old zones in my opinion.

Raising the level cap to 80 makes it harder to find a group, because the player population is being segregated into level ranges, as someone pointed before.

I do raid from time to time, I play group-level content also, and yet I can only see a 10% of each expansion, being generous. I can afford to buy new expansions, but that does not mean I want to throw my money away.

I would suggest some posters in this forum to be more constructive. This forum should be a means of giving SOE some ideas about this game from the player base. If you want to protect SOE and praise how good is the game, go send them a CV. Let players speak. I will add my ideas, as well;

- The game gets old. Models and graphics, as close as three years ago, have nothing to do with today's art. Make the game more appealing, that goes for zones, foes and characters.

- Do server merges. Do not wait for people to leave. Make changes now.

- Remove time sink activities. Guild Hall was great to remove corpse recovery sinks, PoK was great to remove movement sinks. Keep this line of development. Everyone hates to log in, stay connected for one hour and find no one to group with. Make it easier to find a group, or provide alternate activities! I would love to see solo missions that my warrior could actually do. Maybe class-specific solo tasks? Not every class performs the same at soloing.

Yes, more solo content for the not soo solo classes would be nice. Then again, I still do not think that Necros are the best class in the game, but whatever. Ok, flame on if you want to, years of flying in helicopters has made me close to deaf :-)
New expansion

This page is full of ignorant whining. Let's address each issue individually.

"SoE needs to revamp and fix all the old content!"
Don't they redo 2 old zones per expansion now? Haven't TBS and now SoF been the focus of older zones? No it doesn't fix all the "bugs" everyone talks about but it's a starting point and won't be done overnight.

"There's not enough casual content and I never see end lvls!"
There is far more "casual" groupable content in Everquest than raid content by far. It's not even comparable and so obvious that to say otherwise is just bewildering. With TSS tier armor and muiltiple quests you can easily gear close to the level of some raiding guilds. Of course you can't gear as well because it would make raiding inefficient and not worth the time involved aside from exploring the higher end of the game. Everquest has never been a game you can log on to for 15 minutes and get all kinds of crazy *** gear and end lvl. This may come as a shock to some, but I don't expect that to change nor want it to change. If you want a quick and easy, non story driven, brand spanking new MMO to play there are a slew of them available.

"I know more about marketing, game economics, etc than SOE does. Why don't they listen to me?"
I'm fairly certain that SOE has employees that do nothing but focus on these issues and that they're 99.9% of the time a better judge of our "state of the game" than any of us are. Do you really expect a business to not be worried about money? I'm sure they love the artistic and creative side of this game but they have to survive as well. Furthermore, they're obviously doing something right because Everquest is the first and longest living MMO to date and I still believe it will outlast all others easily. On a side point, american mentality is so adapted to the idea of "have it your way" or "the customer is always right" that we sometimes might forget it's a priveledge that any business keeps in communication with it's community at all. Also, if anyone was going to make a suggestion to improve the game do you really think whining and making rude remarks is going to get those ideas taken seriously? Step back for a second and think of how to improve the game in whatever way you think it needs and then find a way to appropriately present that argument rather than spamming the boards and agitating the hornets nest so to speak. I'm done.

Can't agree more. I have played this game since it's inception, and in all facets. What people want is there, just need to find it and sometime not go to the zones that everyone thinks is uber. There is usually 2 other similar zones somewhere.
another F*@&#ing expansion??
# May 16 2007 at 9:11 AM Rating: Default
I am one of those 75 high end raiders, I play several hours a day and I still have a hard time getting things done in the other zones we have much less anything from the upcoming expansion. Sony needs to lay off the damn expansions and level increases for awhile and let us all catch up somewhat. Not everyone can afford to go buy the expansion the day it comes out and when you can't you get left behind content wise. I truly hope this new expansion doesn't come out till after the first of the year and then no more till the year after. By continually coming out with expansion after expansion like crack-crazed maniacs all that happens is older more reliable players are leaving the game. Groups are hard to get because so many people have left EQ. SOE needs a really really strong dose of laxative to get there heads out of there rear ends and stop seeing everything in $$$$. K /rant off lol sorry but I felt I had to say it.
Wish it was just not griding
# May 16 2007 at 8:18 AM Rating: Default
I wish sony would due it right this time and make reuired quests to be done 1st for an AA that allows a level advacment. Forcing peeps to play the new quests and not grind some where.

Griding just makes the game stand still for 30 days while all are just doing EXP over and over. Like a hamster on a treadmill.

my little wish for this expansion would b to fix up the Shrouds, they were a nice idea. but have become ineffective except in limit situations. I would like to see the level cap raised on them and some items to improve the stats and effectiveness some sort of shroud only items. that could be quested for, and then equiped onto your shroud. either a generic item or class type items
Merger
# May 15 2007 at 9:01 PM Rating: Decent
Keep the expansions coming if you feel you must but how about another server merger so I can find a group to hunt with in them? I'm in a hardcore raiding guild and when there is no raid there is virtually nobody from the guild on. They log in to raid then log out when the raid is over.
So I sit LFG on my baz trader or (mostly) solo.
There is more than enough space and hunting spots now to accomodate everyone but the server often appears so sparsely populated that its a real challenge to find a group.
For example how about updating the Ldons to appeal to lvl 75 players? Offer items that lvl 75's and soon 80's would feel worthwhile to take the time to do them.
Also, instead of adding new zones just add new quest's and task's to the existing zones, saves you time and time is money in paying dev's to create entire new zones.
Then maybe people will be encouraged to go back to older zones to rediscover added content and I'm not talking about facelifts, not that facelifts hurt the game at all.

GO 3rd,I.D.!

Finally someone posted the truth yes this game is all about money, wait umm capitalism at its best which means money not for us to have fun so that means cater to people who play the most wich is the high lvls. If this where not true why doesn't sony fix issues we already have. I still like this game but has a lot of things that need attending to and sony isnt gonna fix them. For instance getting groups seems to be an issue, finding a good guild that wants progression or even that plays that often. anyways this is just my opinion but the game was more fun when guilds or peeps wanted progression and actually helped or could even get some buffs before fighting. anyways in essence when ever someone is gonna make a game make it so that it stays fun for everyone not about money and cater to high end guilds and they would find that there would be a lot more peeps playing and not leaving.

I have played for to long now and this is the last straw for me. I dont care about going to 80 or raiding yet another new high lvl zone. I would love to see the old zones redone or add new low lvl zones. I still enjoy running around with my lvl 15-40s. Sadly i am by myself now a days. I am just another in a long line of day dreamers who would love to go back when Velious came out. Take care all.

I can't stand this as much as the next gnoll pup. Why not upgrade the old zone like ldons don and other fun places we all love now I need to junk all my augs for 75s and waste more money deaugging them. Be so much better just to up grade these zones and expansions. I loved the old ldons no one does them now why stuff sucks same with dons stuff isn't up to date which makes them suck. If sony update the exp for the levels the game would be alot better for everyone and add a few zones for highers and explorers. TSS is the best expasion sence don came out. Not sure if I want TBS or this new one unless I can't find a group.

Frogslobber, you are right about the poles and taking care of the experienced, loyal player but one factor you forgot that poles do not show is the game also needs to expand on clients (NEW, never played before, Players) Sony can take advantage like they did long ago by adding a new zone in one of the dead end paths throughout the zones in Norrath like the Warrens. Let them not tell anyone. Let the discovery be pass by word of mouth. So that the old players will go and explorer some of the forgotten zones with the hope of finding those new treasures first.
Sony needs to market the game to bring in the fresh new player. Steal from wow or other on line games I don't care...just give fresh blood to the game. I am tired of seeing the same experienced player making a new toon and speed leveling him up in a week.
The game, to survive, needs the player who is excited about the discovery of the zones, quest and adventure of the game. Just like most of us were when we first started playing.
I think Sony needs to reward players who bring others on line. And after 3 months of the new player still playing give a item or key to a private zone, or something that won’t cost them real $$$’s as a finders fee. There are other was too of bringing the new player, which I have wrote about in other post and will not bore you here.
But we need the NEW PLAYER first, then the new adventures for the older players.

Yes you are right about what sony needs to do if they want to make a bigger profit from EQ. But there lack of marketing this game will only allow new content to be geard towards high end players. I like low level content personally when I play EQ. Never could get into raiding. Almost everytime without missing a beat once I'm forced into the raiding world I seem to quit EQ. But anywoot they just need to remarket this game because all us vets to EQ arn't or at least shouldnt be in school or places where we can hype up this game to bring in new folks and that seems to be what sony is relying on now because they dont want to lose money marketing this game.

I love how you people... instead of dealing with universal issues (like how SoE is having their perverted little ways with our wallets), you decide to take the time out of your day to FLAME other players, just on the grounds of their grammar or what have you. with that being said, stop degrading other players, and focus on the issues at hand... that is all.

OK. We have all seen this before. It was posted when the lvl cap was 65 and again at 70. And low and behold, again at lvl 75. Here's the thing. Allah was gracious unough to put in its websight a poll. In these polls, the EQ community was asked several questions. How often do you raid, How many hours a week do you play, What lvl is your highest toon. etc, etc. The majority of EQ players are the 1337, lvl 75 who raid 3-6 times a week and play roughly 20-40 hours in a 7 day period. Sony, just like every other freakin company in the U.S., is about profit. Lets say 80% of us are raiders, and 20% are the casual. Lets see, risk loosing some of that locked in profit by making more lowbie lvls? or disregard that 20% who stoped thier oh so precious eq time to make a post. Sony doesn't give 2cp about the little guy. And why should they. It's not a winning solution by any means. But it keeps the cash fow coming in. and thats what sony cares about. Everyone wants to see the bugs and the problems dissapear. Even yours truly is more of a casual player than a raider. But I wanted to put the thought about your (our) voice ever actually being herd by sony, into your head. Lets stop the flamage on allah and report to the big cheeze themselves. If you ask me, they should keep the expantions rolling in. But I sure as hell dont want to pay for them. Don't bring in new content on the 14th expantion if you can't get the content on the 3rd expantion right. This world is too big as it is. One word for you, REVAMP. up the loot in LDON to be on par with DoN. Make Kael Drakel a lvl 70+ dungeon. Take the zones that no one has been to in 3 years. and either do away with them, or upgrade the loot table. Paw was a great start. lets keep those ideas flowing.[/s][s]
