Activision Blizzard Splits from Vivendi

Company goes independent in a deal reported to be worth $8.2 billion

As reported by Gamasutra, Activision Blizzard has broken free from Vivendi to become an independent, publicly traded publisher--as announced at midnight eastern time Friday.

It was thought that Vivendi was planning to siphon out billions of dollars from its most successful acquisition through special dividends, but this huge move from Activision averts that payout.

Vivendi will hold 12% of the shares in Activision Blizzard, though it's undoubtedly good news for fans who were concerned about Vivendi's recent stewardship.

The slight negative note on the report is that World of Warcraft has continued to shed subscribers, now down to 7.7 million--still a figure any other MMO would kill for, of course.

"though it's undoubtedly good news for fans who were concerned about Vivendi's recent stewardship."

I thought it was Activision everyone was always concerned with and complaining about.

That's true bombardj, but after the moves Vivendi has made recently, the parent company has certainly caused more consternation.

I had always hoped something like this would come to pass and thought it to be possible given the massive profits of the two companies, but I hardly knew enough about business to KNOW it was possible, well I guess it was.

This is great news for Activision Blizzard.
