Smedley's State Of The Game
SOE President John Smedley gives a glimpse of the present and future
Very few video game executives are as visible and accessible as SOE President John Smedley. He threw down proof of that again last night with a quick post to the official PlanetSide 2 forums on the state of the recently launched free-to-play MMOFPS.
Smed provides some really candid feedback on SOE's progress to improve the game since launch, noting that stability is up and client crashes have been reduced by 95%. Also of note is optimization, of which he teases something meaty coming in January:
We continue to work on bugs and optimizations. We have something we hope will be a big improvement coming in January. It's significant and needs real QA time before we can put it out. That's only one optimization. The team continues to improve this and won't stop.
He goes on to say that, also in January, they'll be taking the unprecedented step of posting their six-month plan for the game, and give players an opportunity to give feedback. Yes, that means it's actually possible you might get something to say about what's next for PlanetSide 2.
Finally, he touches on cheating, which is a problem for every online game these days. While he says there is no "magic answer", they are actively fighting and banning these players every day. Check it out.
On another note, there's a double-XP weekend going on right now for PlanetSide 2. Just so you know.
