12 Games of Christmas: Ultima Online
On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: UO in a Pear Tree
Having found a suitable open spot a player could use the deed and place a dwelling. A house would appear and a key for it was placed in the character's backpack. Finally, one could log out of the game safely and immediately. The rest, without housing, were forced to go to a local inn and stand at the end of a bed in order to be safely logged out. Anyone in the open needed to light a fire and open a bedroll in order to log out immediately. This was important, as logging out sometimes took a long time and a player was vulnerable to any number of perils.
The housing advantage at least gave players a spot to call their own and chests could be placed for storage, finally freeing up space in their bank box. If a player placed a chest, it was lockable, if the person who made it had a high enough carpentry skill. The downside at that time was that even though a house door could be locked, many players took the opportunity to become lock pickers. So the needed security wasn't there and, again, there were many unhappy players. If absolute security was needed, one’s bank box was still the only true protection.
This could not continue or UO would be a great start with a tragic finish. Drastic changes were needed in order to keep the enormous customer base and so Trammel was conceived. Here began a massive exodus by disgruntled players from Felucca to a more peaceful world.
There was an immediate housing boom in Trammel and a massive land base open for house placement. Within a very short time, Trammel became a dream reality and all was well at hearth and home. For hunters, Trammel meant it was finally safe to visit dungeons and hunt spawn without the worry of being attacked by PKs.
