Remote Auction House Coming to an iPhone Near You

Blizzard's new "Remote Auction House" system, which is currently being beta-tested, will allow players to access most of the in-game Auction House features

We've been hearing about the "Remote Auction House" service for a few months now, but the wait is finally over; Blizzard is currently beta testing the new service, which will allow players to access their realm's in-game auction house features from a variety of mobile Apple devices. World of Warcraft players who have characters in participating realms can visit the official Remote Auction House site to sign up for a free beta-test preview of the service right now, which will eventually be an extension of the already-existing Blizzard Mobile Armory service. Once the beta test is completed, the Remote Auction House service will be available for $2.99 (USD) per month and allow users to "bid on and buy out auctions with real-time results, create auctions from items in your bags, bank, or mailbox and collect gold earned in your auctions," according to the official site. Eligible beta participants can download the Remote Auction House app from Apple's iTunes store at this link for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

While Blizzard hasn't announced additional versions of the app for the Google or Windows mobile platforms, the Remote Auction House service is available via the Web for free. The "Web Auction House" can be found at this link. However, the free Web service is also currently in beta-testing and only available to WoW users on the same participating realms as the iPhone app. On the official Remote Auction House site, Blizzard published a graphic comparison chart that illustrates the difference between the free Web-access and the subscription-based service (only paying subscribers will be able to bid/buyout auctions, create auctions, collect gold and more). For more detailed information, players can check out the Remote Auction House FAQ and if eligible, try out the beta service on the official Remote Auction House site.

It will only be used by gold farmers. Personally I find the auction house is a pain without the auctioneer addon anyway. I can only imagine how painful it would be with an iphone app and no auctioneer.

I don't think the gold-farmer thing will be that much of an issue. Blizzard announced in a forum thread that they have a way of automatically stopping Auction House "botting" for the Remote Auction House feature. Plus, like you said, this app will be almost worthless for serious AH users because there won't be any Auctioneer support (at least not anytime soon; the folks over at the Auctioneer site didn't seem too confident that they could develop a "port" for the remote version). But back to gold farmers, I think this app would actually slow them down and make it more tedious to buy and sell, so I can't see it having that big of an impact on the overall economy.

Personally, I'm a big AH buyer and seller. It's almost like a mini-game to me; I really enjoy buying low and selling high, and I've done pretty well for myself over the last few years. That said, I still don't think I'd be able to justify spending $3 per month for this thing, mainly because I feel crippled with the Auctioneer add-on. If it was free, I wouldn't mind having it for the ability to collect gold from my sold auctions while I'm in an elevator or waiting room, or something like that. I suppose it would also be handy to check the AH for specific, rare items that you're looking for, because your chances of finding them on the AH are better if you can log in and check a few times per day, as opposed to only while you're logged into the game. But beyond that, I think a lot of people would agree that it's just a novelty. I'm sure there will be a substantial demand for it, but even as an "Auction House pro," I personally don't think it's worth paying for.

I'm indifferent. It seems like a really stupid way to spend your money. If you feel the need to access your auctions on the go, then maybe you need to consider you're a bit too involved in this game... its one thing to buy something to use in-game... or buying an item like a plushy... but buying something to allow the game to follow you no matter where you are? I don't know...

On the flipside, this may be a good thing for those obsessed about their auctions. They will have the opportunity to manage their auctions without logging into their game which may tempt them to spend more time online than they can afford.

In the end, its really none of my business. I'm only expressing my opinion. I won't look down on someone who does do it. Its their money and they can do whatever they want. For me, it seems like a really stupid way to waste money.

I agree this is BS. Going to help gold sellers and AH manipulators.

A gold farmer's dream, they don't even have to log in to manipulate the AH
