SOE Begins Restoration of Services

UPDATE, May 14, 7:15p.m. EDT: SOE has slowly begun restoration of their services.

SOE - Restoration Announcement
SOE - Welcome Back Program
SOE - Recent Updates

SAN DIEGO, May 14, 2011 - Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announced today that restoration of its game services will begin today. The phased restoration will include the return of nearly all of SOE's portfolio of online games, the reinstatement of SOE's game forums and websites, and added functionality to require players to reset their passwords.

For details on the hacker attack that has kept SOE down since May 2 and compromised the personal information of players, check out SOE's brief FAQ and all of our previous coverage. See this article for the May 12th news on the "Make Good" program details.

During the downtime you are welcome to join us in ZAM's IRC chat. Feldon of EQ2Wire also has set up a ZAM IRC java applet that you can use.

Game-specific May 11th updates:

EverQuest: Players with an active house will be credited one month of upkeep costs and the inactive period will be extended from 90 to 150 days.

EverQuest II: All houses requiring rent will have one month added free to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

Free Realms: The Free Realms birthday event and the New Member Bonus Bonanza will be extended to give everyone a chance to participate in them. Don’t worry about your farms; they’ll be taken care of too!

Star Wars Galaxies: All Galactic Civil War point decay has been suspended and inactive citizen removal time temporarily increased by 14 days. Item and vendor expiration timers have also been increased by 14 days.

Vanguard: One day for each day lost will be added to every player's Upkeep Bank to help offset any costs incurred during this outage.

THIS IS HOW I SEE THE +1 day/per down day

Example....

So lets say you booked a hotel in Cancun

you pay for a week

2 days in they have to close the hotel until further notice

The staff says basically: Hey out of good faith for every day that you paid and dont have access well give you a FREE DAY!!!! at a later unknown time.

I mean the REPLACEMENT day thing applies to just about any service offered doesnt it?

The 30 days in the hopes to diminish the bleeding (exiting accounts) is but a small drop in the bucket, I think however they are mentioning something about acct security for a yr or something, which may help cover what ever fraud some of these 10s of millions of folks may encounter when this is all said and done.

Slow and few updates, will probably not loyal customers maintain.... after a while even the SOE *** kissers will loose patience.

1)SOE will have to prove that they are capable of handling peoples private information

2)Replacing lost days at a pace of 1 per 1 should be a given

3)30 free days when and if services resume is SMALL incentive for customers to ride this whole thing out.

Its my belief that SOE has to handle their hacked issues on one front They also have to consider how much the loyalty of some folks will hold out when they arent coming out with either encouraging updates or enticing compensation for remaining SOE customers.

Bad scenario SOE updates every day or 2 and NO ONE comes here to show any interest at all, there can come a point when a good chunk of people will simply loose interest one way or the other and take their time money and interest elsewhere.

My NDA states I'm not allowed to say if I work for SOE or not.

As for me, well, I'm getting 152 days of free EQ out of this. Let it be down for a month for all I can. Economics 101 says I'm making money on this deal and hell, look at that, the grass got mowed on time.

The only thing I'd like from SOE is to give a ball park figure, with +/- 7 days. I'd also like morons like you to go away. At this point, I'm not sure which of the two is more likely.

I have not played EQ in several months, in fact I have only played EQ for maybe a couple months over the last 1 or 2 years. When they raised the monthly price & the economy tanked, I as well as many others of the "working class" canceled my account because paying bills were more important. Granite I work for myself and make a nice living doing what I do I know others like a family member of mine was not so lucky and cut their subscription to sony because they had indeed lost their job. When I seen the email come through about the breech on sony I sorta chuckled.

I am not one to worry about my account profile being stolen because I have more then 1 fraud insurance plan so if 1 fails the other will pick it up. But what I think is so amusing is reading these post from people that are out of their minds because a simple video game is not up. Mainly from those people that are and always will be part of the "Moocher Class". Now I understand for the "moocher class" people it's difficult having to find things to do besides mooch my tax dollars & you might have to actually go outside for a change; but hey, here's and idea.. Its spring time.. Some people might actually be needing their lawns mowed or some landscaping done. How about you get out their and start earning a living & be honest when you walk into the welfare office to tell them you've decided to stop mooching and would like to try "work" out for a change for return the employer will give you money.. And you can use that money you "earn" yourself (not stealing it from us that do work) and buy something nice for yourself of course, after you pay your bills with the money YOU earned yourself and not MY money..

I'm sure I will get some nasty re's to this post but quite frankly I don't care!! I do like playing EQ and when they get their problem resolved & I get around to having time to play I'm sure I will play once again here & there.. Until then I will play other free games on the internet when I have time because my life does not revolve around EQ..

Thats my two cents..

Kind Reguards
A past experienced eq player

PS.. If sony wishes to recover from this money wise then I would suggest they lower the monthly price back down to what it was before the economy tanked.. Cheaper good's will draw more people into wanting the service and their numbers on the servers might actually climb again to when the game was fun & had others to socialize & group with.. Or here's an idea.. Reset the entire game servers so everyone gets to start from scratch.. What fun that would be..

I understand that a lot of the hardcore players are on disability or welfare. This allows them to play vertually around-the-clock. I worry about me and my family. I use this game like the majority of EQ subscribers,...to relieve stress from real life. Working 12 hr days makes it difficult for me to play on a regular basis. I afford 2 account by paying 2 years at a time (alternating due dates by keeping it a year apart). This makes my monthly cost about $8.50 per account ($17 per month for both) and only pay about $200 each year (usually around the time tax return comes in).
I hope most will continue to play, whether they are from the working class or those unable to work for whatever reason. I would hate to see this game end and doubt that I would ever start another.

I play 22 toons on Bert. Those that play with me will know who I am. I hope to see you all again soon.

Peace to all and happy hunting.

Moocher class?? Hmm, I have played since 2001, my husband since 2004, we pay for 4 accts. He is 61, I am 53, our child is grown, we have grandchildren. He retired from the military after 23 yrs. and 2 wars. Our home and land are both paid off, he is on his second career, and we play EQ for fun. As in entertainment.

We miss EQ, and are waiting for things to get back on track, but in the meantime we picked up a couple copies of Rift, and are playing that. Pretty, but way too easy, IMHO. It will, however, hold us until EQ gets back up.

My yard is mowed, roses fed and pruned, dogs shaved for the summer, all is right with our world at the moment, except EQ, lol.

You should really think twice about the words coming out of your mouth, before uttering them, as they only point out the complete lack of working gray matter available to you...

And, yes, I know $16 a month is hard-come-by if you are out of work, I remember when 5 bucks to last the week til payday was the norm for us(the military isn't the greatest paying career), but I cannot think of many other forms of entertainment that cost .50 a day, for @24 hours of availability(patches not withstanding). I read a LOT, and I can't keep myself in books for that, certainly. Even going to the library uses gas. So, I really don't buy your argument that lowering the prices back to 10-12 dollars will gain back a ton of customers. If you cannot afford 16, you probably cannot afford 10...

Mostly, you just sound like a sour person, who is rarely satisfied with much of anything in life, and, therefore, EQ is probably well rid of you. Cheers on doing whatever makes you happy in life, I doubt it is very much.

You claim that the complainers are of the "moocher class". I contend that they are the exact opposite - people with disposable income. People definitely NOT of the "moocher class" do play this game. And we complain.

Secondly, its difficult to appreciate someone's criticism on social position if that message is so frought with spelling and grammatical errors that it appears to be a contrived parody.

ZAM - How about a contest for us to guess when SOE is back on line
Winner gets a year of Identity theft protection and a station pass!

I wish Sony would be nice enough to describe the steps still needed and guess at a time table before the servers go back on line:
Just something simple…

IE:

UPDATING SOE NETWORK PLEASE WAIT......

1. Figuring out what software we need to add (10 days) DONE!
2. Adding hack blocking and other security software (12 hours) IN PROCESS
3. Checking Compatibility effects of new software on game play (12 hours)
4. Checking to see if the Hack Blocking software is actually unhackable (2 days)
5. Installing new patch (2 Hours)

5.1 Adding extra XP pots and other goodies to help players not hate us because of downtime.
5.2 Adding 2xp for the same amount of time the network was down.
5.3 Fixing other stuff we planned to fix before this security "glich"
5.4 Adding MOB "A Nasty Hacker" random pop in most zones drops group ver. of potions of adventure

6. Rebooting servers with all the new software ( 8 Hours)
7. Final testing (1day)
8. *forums and EQ players will become available this time please check in for game updates and countdown!
9. Unlocking servers

Something new talk about
:)

During the recent Activision Blizzard earnings call, Blizzard Entertainment CEO Mike Morhaime mentioned that World of Warcraft subscriber levels had fallen to 11.4 million this March from its former peak of 12 million. In response, he said that Blizzard is currently looking at ways to reduce downtime between expansions.

The dip in subscription numbers shouldn't come as too much of a surprise with the March launch of Rift and the absence of a major WoW patch at that time. It's safe to say that the playerbase will continue to fluxuate, especially if Blizzard is able to churn out more content.

What do you think? You can discuss the topic in this thread in our WoW general forum.

SOE being the ******* red headed step child that we never mention or take out in public... but here's some more useless PSN news you already knew.

HERE is an article that says May 31.

And THIS ARTICLE says the above article is wrong.

And to quote this one, Patrick Seybold states "I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, I [am pretending not to have a clue to distract you from the fact that we're botching the hell out of the PR side of things.] . . .[and will continue] at least a few more days" (emphasis mine)

This all begs the question... Is Sony really this incompetent to botch something so simple? I know the media are rubbish, but certainly they can't even mess up so badly as to be THIS inaccurate....

EDIT: Ohhh, early Facebook update today, a whole 30 minutes earlier than yesterday's! In case you were wondering, it says servers aren't online today. That's in case you failed to notice it.

EDIT2: "They will not be up today, May 10th, but we are working as quickly as possible to resolve this." Soooo, they're working hard to resolve the fact that the server won't be up today or working hard to resolve the fact that the server might be up today?

Well this 'Server wont be up today' crap is really annoying, im guessing they really do think we are fools.

Im all for sitting patiently and letting them fix the problems but really, do we all deserve to be treated like this? Possibly we do?, and im not gonna go into why some 'bod' is using facebook to taunt us.

Someone must know a length of time the servers wont be up surely?

Something like this wouldn't be to bad :

Dear loyal customers and friends, due to the issues you are no doubt partialy aware of our services are still turned off and unavailable at present.

While we realise this is causing no little frustration we assure you we are working hard to reach a satisfactory resolution regarding this extended downtime.

As for when the services will be up and running again we have no definative date at present.

We will update you again in seven days from today if the situation is as it stands today, obviously if we have any change before that time then again, we will let you all know.

Thank you again for your loyalty and patience during this time

(insert name)

While I think that some people are being ridiculous in their attitudes and behaviors and some of them need to take this time to get a real world life, I do think SOE is doing a terrible disservice by not being more communicative about what is happening, potential timelines ( I know they cannot give exact dates, times, but ballpark would be nice), etc. On a side note to that, it's highly amusing how many clarivoyants and mind readers we have posting here. Maybe they should take their act on the road. It would give them something to do besides complain.

I've been reading this thread for days and days. To me it seems that everyones comments are either, I hate sony, sony owes me, or quit hating on sony.

I've played EQ2 since beta and I love the game but after the recent attacks I decided to find something else to do with my spare time rather than waiting on Sony to clean up the mess they found themselves in. I knew from the get-go this wouldn't be an easy fix because of the type of problem they were facing. However, I did know that Sony would lie through their teeth to keep customers hanging on so they didn't lose everyone the first day with a, we won't be back online for a month but please hang in there we're working as fast as we can, statement.

EQ2 is dead and gone which is alright, it happens to all major games at some point with some major FAIL game update or something like this. I've played every major online game that's came out in the last 14 years, EQ2 and UO were my 2 favorite games of all time.

That being said, I found this little kids game called Wizard 101. My 3 girls play it and I thought, meh yards mowed, dishes are put up, I'll give it a shot, why not. I love this game! It's turn based which is different but the game idea is great. I don't like dealing with the free account people that can't type in chat but oh well. The progression is simple, relaxing, and fun.

I looked at Wizard 101 on mmorpg.com and saw that it was low on the ratings and I thought, how can I like a game that's rated a 7.4 or whatever it was. I spent 60 bucks on some crowns, played through the first 15 levels of quests and I'm tellin ya this is a diamond in the rough if given a chance.

The point of me writing this is to tell all of you EQ2 isn't the only game that's good out there. I can't stand WoW, I can't stand Rift. nor can I stand any of the other big hitters other than EQ2. But I ran onto a "kids game" (wizard 101) and I absolutely love it! So, I will be cancelling my accounts when Sony's website comes back up and I would suggest to you, the reader, to try out some free trials and some different game genres and see what's out there. You never know what you'll try on a whim and end up really enjoying until you see what's out there.

It's good that you found something else to do and are having fun with it. There are lots of great games out there, I've been playing Ryzom and found the community to be very nice and even see CSR's in the game helping people.

I've played EQ2 for years and run a very large ACTIVE guild on Everfrost, I will be here waiting for Sony to come back online. The game is way to much fun and I have lots of other games I can play and things to do until it's back online.

It's sad that so many feel they have to cancel accounts but it is what it is. I WILL NOT be one of the ones walking away. I would gladly give up any free time just to have the game back up and our data safe and sound. If all this mess costs them so much money they have to change prices on our monthly subs, then so be it. I will pay it, I love the game and it's fun to hand with all the good people that play it.

There's NO other games out there that do events and have so much to offer us. There's just not, so those that love it will be back. Yes, we all may be a bit concerned over security but I'm sure that will be addressed.

In the downtime I'll enjoy playing Ryzom and maybe some LOTRO with my guild members.

Having played Rift past week, I can say it can be successful agianst WOW. I tink they will do well too. I wish SOE devs borrow some of their ideas to EQ. Joining small and server wide rift event raiding is fun.

I just hope that SOE realizes that there are enough loyal EQ players base that they can rely on and build upon.

Major Password Service May Have Been Hacked
LastPass Found Strange Traffic On Their Site

(CNN) -- Virtually every online service requires users set up an account protected by a password, and the conventional wisdom is that you shouldn't use the same password for multiple accounts. This makes services that help users generate and store strong passwords very appealing.

LastPass, one of the most popular password-storing services, announced Wednesday that it may have been hacked. The company is now asking many of its users to change what its marketing has been touting as "the last password you'll ever need."

The difference is that they are up and I did not have any issues with it. You are supposed to change it every month anyway for precaution.

Being hacked is not a problem. I think most would have accepted the situation either negatively or understanding but eventually all would have joined back. It is the duration of downtime and lack of customer relation rebuilding effort that will be the deciding factor for the survival of EQ franchise. You can support or hate them only for a time. After 3-4 weeks people will not care becasue they are freed from EQ addiction. They will find other options spend their "free" time.

I hope and pretty certain EQ will survive this but I know we will have lot less players and there will be another server merges. And I don't think maintaining 5-6 servers will turn enough profits for SOE to continue EQ. EQ2 will survie though.

If ya'll didn't see on one of the recent updates on Zam, Rift is now offering 7 day free trials. I have been reading up some on it and it actually looks pretty sweet. I am not too physced about what I call the over-saturation of abilities, or the spells>abilities syndrome in MMORPGs (that's why I love original EQ so much, spells and abilities are very separate, and they give you GOOD abilities every 5-15 levels instead of 1 crappy one every 2), but rift does look pretty sweet. I don't work for Rift, nor am I as fed up with Sony and some people appear to be, but just thought I would pass this along.

The sad truth is, the SoE portion of Sony's subscription base is only a fraction of the whole, with PSN lot being the majority. I wouldn't be surprised if PSN is brought back online first, with SoE lagging behind.

As a long time SoE customer, I am insulted by the lack of communication from Sony as well. Sony is looking after their cash cow first. The rest of us will have to either stay and graze or leave the pasture for greener grass elsewhere.

About theft insurance. Sony is only offering 1 year. It should be at least two years. Your information will be floating out there in a nice and neat easy to read format instead of bits of information here and there. You should have that insurance anyway in these days. You really don't want to go through ID theft.

They are also supposedly to ofer two Sony games. And these are only for PSN subscribers. Not SOE MMO game users.
