I guess my only -real- complaint is that I wish they'd mix the days up a bit more. This is two times in a row that my static has been messed up because the last two (major) downtimes (update and then maintenance) have been on Mondays for longer than 10 hours each.

Not really a big deal, I guess. Just frustrated, and want to get to where I can cast my teleports. Ah well. ^(_)^ I've got better things to do. I just wish it wasn't so hot outside *sweat*

I have never been much more than a casual gardener, running 1 or 2 plants at a time and only when I knew I had a chance to take care of them. However, I recently started a fairly large gardening project on a mule with sapplings. Does anyone out there know if my inability to log in for the day with this update will likely kill much of my crop? Not much I can do about it anyway now except log in right before and right after the update to check on them, but I was just curious to hear from an experienced gardener.

In all my growing experience, one night has never really affected my saplings. my suggestion would be, if possible, log on an hour or so before the maintenance, check your plants, and once its over, log on as soon as you can and check your plants. really if you miss a day for your saps, it wont do much more then lessen your chances of your ores(presuming thats what your growing), so no worries. ^^

I can't believe that a maintanence is taking this much attention and getting this much response! And I apologize ahead of time for repeating what is said over and over, but I am doing it anyway.

Realize, MMOs are played on computers. Computers need maintanence on a constant basis. There will be times they go down. The larger the network, the more time it will take to maintain.

As for seeing all of the complaints of "Why does this happen on my time?" is, by far, ridiculous, especially for this one. I am near Chicago and have had pleanty of times where I come home after work and there is a scheduled maintanence going on. Also, maintanence time {Please check it} 18 HOURS. This will affect 3/4 of the world, not just your small bubble. Be thankful that they aren't doing it on a Saturday or Sunday, when most people are available to play all day.

If you are getting that worked up about things getting "fixed", then perhaps you need to take a closer look at what YOU need to "fix". Take a freaking vacation! It helps to get away from the game a week to two weeks or even a month. Sorry, I forgot, money would be wasted at that point, wouldn't it?

I myself have pulled out old PS games to mess around with during these things as well as when I notice that the game is taking over. Books are also a nice change. Remeber the disclaimer everytime you log in - Don't forget your friends, family, work. This is a game, not a job, not a living, let it be so.

/em steps off his soap box.

Since when does the world revolve around YOU? Haven't you (and every one else who complains "Why can't they do this at a more convient time for me") realized that regardless of your local time it is always a prime playing time in another time zone?? SE does a great job of trying to schedule these at the times that will affect the fewest number of their customers.

If it bothers you this much that the servers will be down during the workday hours on a Monday, when most other people are actually working), maybe you should run your own gameing company so you can schedule the maintaince whenever you please. But since this would require you to do something other than game 24/7, I guess this isn't something that can happen.

If they are just upgrading their side, shouldn't that mean that if the game itself won't be touched, and therefore no client side updates?

I haven't, as of yet, seen any plans on tweaking or touching the code itself... which is why I'm wondering.
RE: Maintenance but update?
# Aug 04 2005 at 7:43 PM Rating: Decent
No they are upgrading the POL server. It went down they are running on backups atm. thats why everything is so slow. They are getting a new Playonline server, meaning less lag, and maybe no more DDoS. And because they are getting a new POL server, not just FFXI or w/e, everything is down. This includes the JP POL stuff like Front Mission 4
Don't fret
# Aug 04 2005 at 4:26 PM Rating: Decent
They said they were upgrading the server equipment. UPGRADING.

They are upgrading the software, maybe even the hardware. After this, we may get far less lag or possibly, *gasp*, no more DDoS!

Now...have any of you read actually read this? Can you not comprehend that all the complaining in the world means nothing to them!? Just to give you an example here's a little quote from one of my favorite books/movies

"Take the number of vehicles in the field, A
multiply that by the probably rate of failure, B
Then multiply the result by the average out of court settlement, C. A x B x C = X
If "X" is less than the cost of the recall, we don't do it"

Therefore, SE doesn't care about your problems, why? Because they are "legally" not responsible for them. So, when you make a product and distribute it for profit to the masses you can place all the responsibility on everyone else too.
So you say SE is crap for all the updates, and downtime and you should be re-embursed for your time. While SE says that so long as you pay for their product they don't give a flying f-uck about your problems...well at least not until they affect a massive group.

Don't take this personal...its just life, and life is business, and business is money, money is time, and time is the amount of life you have.
So you see its all full circle.

Get used to dissapointment, life is full of it, if you don't like it quit the game (hell, quit life while you're at it).

If you want it changed, make your own game maybe? I know some of you probably have the knowledge to do so.

later cheese weasels.

P.S. I got nothing against you all (well I guess that's not entirely true, I swear at a lot of you...frequently), just trying to help you understand why its this way.

If I'm seeing this right it's not going to be down 36 hours. The game is going to be down 18 hours. 8am on the 8th thru 2am on the 9th is 18 hours. I'm pissed about how poorly the last big update went and hopefully they will have a backup plan next time but this type of environment needs constant attention to run well. I mean if they didn't have updates they game would run poorly and have more crashes then now, also we wouldn't get the cool new content that keeps everyone playing. I know it sucks when you play all the time but that's the way it's just going to have to be. Have a backup FPS you can play for an evening. ^^

Is this 8 AM to 2 AM? I'm pretty sure SE goes off of military time, but I heard it's 36 hours long, so I and not quite sure. As a side note, most of the people that are complaining have atrocious spelling and grammar, so they're probably the ones that you wouldn't want to party with anyways. Sure, a day without FFXI isn't the same, but there is so much more you can do in that time. If you can't live without electronics, go watch TV. If you somehow managed to maintain a relationship during your addiction to a game, go to a movie or spend some time outside.

It's times like this where I actually start to worry about people. So far after reading this page, I've seen nothing but ******** and complaining except for a few people. Nemulus I praise you. A few others like Genjimasa, Speedly, and others.. You should maybe take a break from FFXI if you are getting this worked up about it yah? Alot of people are like "We need $ refunds!" For those of you who have seen the Scrubs flash animation.. Break out those fire crystals its time for some target practice..

SE doesn't owe you anything. Things happen with all MMORPGS where they need to do an Emergency Maitenece every now and then. And I read someone say that FFXI is the worst when it comes to maitenence because there are "too many of them" Um.. Ok yea there is alot of them but have you seen any other game with as much success as FFXI? Is any other MMORPG out there as advanced as FFXI? No. And no matter what people say, FFXI is the most advanced MMORPG at the moment.

Figure this out for all you complainers out there:
If SE did not do this maitnence, you would be posting somewhere complaining about how slow everything is. So either way you would still be ******** about something.

If SE did not do this maitnence, Many people who want to start playing the game would probably quit before they even hit level 5 if they had the same train of thought you did.

If SE did not do any maitnence/updates.. FFXI would be the most boring MMORPG atm, not the most Advanced.

You folks just need to take a break from the game for a bit I think. If all you do is play this game when you aren't working or at school.. You need help.

As much as i would like to aggree that Maintance sucks, This really is needed.. This is a Play Online Server, not only does this affect FFXI and Tetramaster, This is effecting all the japanese games as well ( Front Mission Online and others ) It is my belief that there Primary Login Server has taken a Dump and now they are running on backups till the 8th, so expect to see lots of failed logins. For anyone who has ever had a Large Server it is not easy to replace one. There is alot of testing involved to make sure they properly work. I am sure this was not planned by SE or their Clients. I must addmit the down time has been more frequent latley, but I would still rather play a game were the " updates " are once every other month rather then every week for 8 hours. Seeing as this is not an update but rather a Technical Difficulty this is somthing we will all have to live with. I hope not to offend anyone but more or less enlighten them on what I belive to be the Current Situation.

Thank you all for your time.

How much you pay per hour
# Aug 03 2005 at 10:33 PM Rating: Excellent
For those of you complaining that SE owes you money, here is an example of how much you pay SE each month.

Lets say you just pay the $12.95
Lets say there is 31 days in a month. With 24 hours in a day. So thats 31 X 24 = 744 hours in a month. Now take your $12.95 and divide that by the 744 hours. That equals $0.017 cents an hour. So your complaining that SE owes you basically $0.02 per hour of maintaince.

Now I know there are some of you that will say SE owes you for when you planned on playing, but cannot cause of maintance. That the rest of the day, when you are at school/work/whatever, doesnt count as part of your "paying" play time. So what your saying then is when you get called into work to cover for someone, or have a family emergency, or something of that nature, that the people that caused you to miss playing FFXI now owes you the money for FFXI that you are missing out on?? Come on people, grow up.

per hour....thats a crack of a plumer if i never heard it before, your paying for your Char/Account in gen, you arent being charged for how much time, so this Luts say and luts say that, isn't even the lemon in squares cup of tea, they rob you for the cost of the account in gen, so if you can't play the game then its out of your hands, sit back, read a book, walk your dog, cook dinner, make love to your manga collection, do whatever, Maintenance is trying to help you not discorge you(crappy speller :P) you gotta get on with life the game will always be there, you will not.

You're right, SE needs to do maintenence at times, but when they do, it's a pain to login afterwards.

About the cost to players, well, it's a few cents per hour. I mean, if you play 15 times a month, you lose a dollar every day you don't get to play. Well I guess that's too bad, but I don't blame them for that. My anger is in the pain to go through updating with POL-1160s every 15 seconds...

Again however, where money is concerned...To who said SE does not care about Europe, listen...

SE does not care about anyone playing FFXI, they care about people who don't play. Let me explain, In February, they initiated "Welcome Home to Vana'diel" and gave a free month of play to anyone who wanted to come back that had left the game. That's a $15 gift to people who stopped giving SE money.

Now, they release the new package for FFXI that includes both of the two expansions. Easy to find, easy to buy, cheaper than they are individually...A LOT cheaper...I bought FFXI with Zilart for $50 when I started. It cost nearly the same for Chains of Promathia. That's $100, plus the cost of nearly $15 a month...The new set comes for $30 with free bonuses in addition to the entire game, and a copy for a friend to demo for a month free. That's a $70 gift to anyone who hasn't sent money to SE yet for FFXI.

The way I see it, we, the loyal fans of the game deserve something. I mean, figure that we've been here since the time we joined. SE hasn't given us anything to reward us in comparison. The way I see it, I'm out $85.

Maybe, SE should offer loyalists to the game a free month every once in a while, say 1 free month a year if you've been in the game for a year. Or, perhaps, a reduction in cost for being a member for so long. Maybe it'll only cost $10 a month to play instead of $15 after playing for a year...

It's not so much that I hate SE for being generous to new players, or returning ones. I just feel that the loyal playerbase also deserves some attention too. (Even a better way to download updates without having to see POL-1160 errors...Downloading from a website link would be so much faster and then you could let it install without having to worry about timeouts like the POL-1160.)

regardless of the actual per-hour cost of playing this game, if I normally can only play evenings (for example) and that at three separate moments in the month S-E's maintenance causes the game to not be available during those moments, then those are, technically speaking, three days that I can not play. therefore, it might actually be better to divide the $12.95 into 31 equal payments. This is still a piddling amount. Barely a few dollars worth. However, when my cable company has problems for a few hours, they reimburse me for those days. When my cellphone company has problems with its network, they reimburse me for those days. Those gestures from the corporate side are considered "good-will gestures". While they may actually add up to very little actual money from the paying customer's side, they DO add up to a considerable amount of good will and a sign of consideration from a corporation to whom you have been dutifully paying monthly fees.

I won't sit here and gripe about "another maintenance"... I'm happy S-E is doing something about its technical issues. I'm dissappointed that I don't get to play during my usual playing time AGAIN, but I'll just find something else to do, like I've done every time there's been a lengthy maintenance period.

BTW, any time a customer has reason to complain about service, that's a sign of poor corporate planning and a lack of respect for the people who put food in the mouths (or money in the pocketbooks) of a company's empoyees and share-holders.

The math adds up but it really isn't that simple. I mean, subtract average sleeping time per day and average working/school time per day and the numbers are quite different. Look, I don't complain on principle, but these updates are getting kind of crazy at this point, and that is ultimatly the point here. If SE uses this upcoming downtime to improve their servers so that we don't AGAIN experience the kind of insanely long downtime/update problems that have become, sadly, very common, then I expect we are all for it. However, just saying "hey, its only $0.10...big deal" isnt quite accurate. The fact is, because I live in North America and this update will deny me my 4th evening of playing in the past month, that works out to 13.3% of my prime playing time I am unable to actually play. That is significant. The total hours are small, yes, but they are actually irrelevant in my case because I can't play 24 hrs a day. I can play only on certain times and, lately, SE's update/server problems cost me those prime playing times on a consistant basis. Will I quit? No, not yet because I think it will get better. Would I quit if I was consistantly denied access to this game 13.3% of the time for a lengthly period of time? You bet. Here's hoping SE gets it right this time...I'm hopeful they will!
